Calling it a surprise is blatantly wrong, whether one finds it important or not.
You're right, though - I have a huge problem with Polygon. It's not acceptable for the most self-important site in gaming to be uninformed regarding a major product... particularly when it's a safe bet they ran the page - accuracy be damned - simply because they wanted content to post.

And like I said earlier, just about all major tech publications are reporting on the story as though its new news, so I simply don't think it was as clearly communicated previously as you have or necessarily click-baity with regards to Polygon specifically.
To each their own, I hate Polygon's "opinion" pieces and find them dreadful so i'm not necessarily trying to defend them in general, I just didn't think the wording here is that problematic. Oh well

Maybe I haven't paid as much attention to Nintendo news, but as a mainstream gaming press and forum reader it was news to me, and really I've only seen the initial tweet from Nintendo announcing the return of the NES Classic as "expected to be available through the end of the year" and hadn't heard anything substantial since then.
That said, the post last May was this tweet from Nintendo:
#NESClassic Edition will return to stores on June 29! This system and the #SNESClassic Edition system are expected to be available through the end of the year. bit.ly/2wwRodF
And of course, the exact same author reported on that tweet for Polygon back in May, with the subheading "Nintendo expects the system to last through the year":
https://www.polygon.com/2018/5/13/17...-2018-for-sale
Polygon repeated the "end of the year" note in this later article:
https://www.polygon.com/2018/6/28/17...mazon-best-buy
So, again, not really a "surprise" to those who were paying attention.
Seaching for other articles reveals these headlines:

It's fine to post a reminder/confirmation that Nintendo is only planning on shipping these through the end of the year, but Polygon made some mistakes/inaccuracies in its article.

I would like to get an SNES Classic before they are all gone, but it's no big loss if I don't. Right now, I see them everywhere.

Seems nitpicky. I wouldn't call any of those mistakes/inaccuracies worth calling out, but I won't argue since you always take things so literally.

We don’t play ours that often but I’m still glad we have them. When I want to feel the classic vibe when playing, I want that classic styled system and not just some ROM and a 3rd party controllers.

I mean, this is still a ROM, but the controller does make a big difference. I still do most of my old school gaming on emulators with 3rd party controllers, but I own most of these classic systems for when nostalgia hits hard (and added a couple games that I grew up with).

With the announcement that they were ceasing production, I bought one over the weekend. Hoping to get a SNES Classic soon too, although I never owned a regular one so it's less of a concern for me.
I actually have a working NES and a nice compact 4x3 13" flat screen monitor but this is a lot more convenient. Wish they had some favorites like RC Pro-Am, Ice Hockey and/or Blades of Steel, and Pro Wrestling ("A Winner is You"), but I have those on my regular NES anyway.
I'm definitely rusty in my game play; got knocked down by Glass Joe.

^It's really easy to add whatever games you want to it. I have the entire NES Library on mine.

Is there a way to do Game Genie codes, that sort of thing, on a NES Classic?

I thought this thing was sort of like the (in)famous Asian "Zii Eagle", a similar device with nearly 1000 classic Shaw Bros movies that absolutely no one has been able to crack yet.

Naw, these are all legitimately the most easily hacked devices in the world. People even figured out how to use the USB Power Port w/ an OTG adapter (like used on Android phones) to connect a hard drive to it for Playstation Games.

You have to enable the cheats mod in Hakchi2 CE, and make sure the game is run using RetroArch instead of Nintendo's emulator (clover).
Here's guides on how to do it for the SNES Classic, but it should work for the NES Classic as well

Even without hacking it to add more games, the NES Classic is a great little device at an outstanding price. Like most of you oldies here, I remember paying $100 for an NES with ZERO games (I think it was $129 to get one with Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt).

I bought both the NES and SNES. I never had a SNES and my brother had a NES late in its lifecycle so I only got to use it occasionally. Last year at a video gaming con my son was into the SNES they had set up so I have been aiming to get one.
I had to do some finagling on my TV to free up an HDMI port.

I wasn’t rushing to get one of these, but with the announcement production is being stopped I’ll probably grab one soon. Even though I’ve got a lot of the games on cartridge format and have my Switch with the online NES library it’s still a nice little unit to have around. Works well for traveling or for going to a friend’s place. Plus just as a little collectible.
In some ways it surprises me Nintendo doesn’t just keep these going a while longer as they still seem to sell fairly well, but I suppose most people that really wanted them probably have them by now.

Connected mine. Wow those are short controller cables. I'm going to order the extended cables.
The instructions say to unplug it when not in use. Anyone actually do that?

I have a question for those that have both the NES Classic and the SNES Classic and modded them to add their respective libraries. Did you mod both of them or just one? Which one would you recommend to add both the NES and SNES libraries into it if you had to choose one?

With hakchi, I think there's a good chance any "corruption" could be recovered from, especially if you made a backup ahead of time.

As for games, I'm not sure what you mean by "library," however, keep in mind that while you can fit all NES games on the NES Classic, you can't fit all SNES games on the SNES Classic, and you certainly can't fit all games from both consoles on one of the Classics, at least not without adding external storage to the Classic.

Re: NES Classic Edition (30 games; 60 bucks; 11/11/2016)
I've modded both. They're basically the same inside, but if I had to mod just 1, it would be the SNES, simply because the controllers for the SNES classic can easily accommodate both systems and the NES controllers cannot. Also the controller cables are longer, though still probably not as long as you would like. If you have your own third party controller solution in mind, it really doesn't matter at all which console you mod, but just note that SNES games take up much more space than NES games, and while you can easily fit the entire NES library (700+ games) on one of these, you can only fit in the neighborhood of 200 games SNES games on one of them, and that's without putting on any NES games or other stuff on it.

I got a Super Nintendo Chalmers over the weekend. The NES was more a priority, since I actually had one (and it's still functional today) back in the day; never had an SNES. But with the SNES starting to get scarce I pulled the trigger. Yep, I'm now addicted to Super Metroid. God I love 2-D gaming.
