I was going to get one for a friend of mine as a Christmas gift, but it's looking like there'll be really low stock numbers, and it's just not worth the hassle.

It's Nintendo, they suck at predicting demand, or maybe intentionally undersell demand. Either way, this doesn't look like it has the production issues a full sized console would have, it's basically a Pi in a neat case.

I heard someone talk about playing it on the radio (I think it was an NPR program) and they said the controller cord is short by design so that the console and it's reset button will be closer to the player and not all the way across the room, under the TV. I think you can use any old long USB cable to connect the console to the TV, so it won't be an issue.

Cord even. But yeah, do people really have long USB cables laying around? I'm an IT guy and tech junkie with a shit ton of gadgets, but the longest USB cable I have is probably at most 6 feet. The idea that the console is supposed to be closer to you still doesn't really make sense.

You can't drive up demand if there aren't shortages.

I'd really like to have one of these for the Thanksgiving break since I always got new Nintendo systems around that time, but I'll be damned if I'm going to chase after this thing. When I see it easily available online or in a store I'm at anyway I'll grab one. If I never get it, oh well.
If this is in short supply it will certainly be more easily scalped than a more expensive system.

For whatever reason Paperboy came up tonight with my kids and I was describing it and hopped in here to check the games list: It always seems to be the red headed step child of NES classics.

Yep pretty sure this will be a red tag special at Target come June. Was excited at first but my daughter can wait. I think most of these games will frustrate her anyway. I forgot how hard they were. I downloaded the 20th anniversary duke nukem edition for the xbone and can't believe how bad I suck at the game. I remember playing it on my Packard Bell back in the day and hammering F5 to quick save but man I am way to slow to even have fun with it now.

Maybe it's from licensing headaches? Paperboy was pulled from XBLA too, and I don't think it's ever shown up on any of Nintendo's Virtual Consoles. Paperboy would definitely make my shortlist if I could choose what went on here. (I'd also aim for more than 30 measly games, but whatever.)

I'm sure for a lot of people, this was the only version they played, but in that case I would expect them to just hate the game. ??

I'm actually considering just buying a cart based system since i have about 60 carts, including several of the games I wish were on this system.

Yeah, that's a very interesting option too. I have no carts so I would have to either buy some or invest in an flash-cart. Those options will still be there once I realize the Switch's VC sucks too.

I played the crap out of it on the GameBoy but never really cared for the NES version.

Nothing so far... Toys R Us put out their Xmas booklet (a far cry from the catalog I loved as a kid) and it did feature the mini NES... but nowhere to pre-order.

Makes sense, as like I said, this is being sold as more of a traditional "toy" rather than a videogame console.

Nyko does Nintendo's work for it with a wireless controller for NES Mini.
With Nintendo's miniaturised NES Classic Edition, there are some things that you just don't want to see changed, just... shrunk. Those chunky power buttons, those retro-chic air vents, that grey plastic casing that'll inevitably turn yellow in the sun. It's all good.
But, in the 30 years since the original NES came out, there have been some gaming advancements that we're rather fond of. Not least of which would be the advent of wireless controllers, which made the painfully short leads of the otherwise wonderful-looking NES Classic Edition even harder to stomach.
But where Nintendo fears to tread, others boldly go. Third-party peripheral manufacturer Nyko has built the Miniboss controller, a wireless NES pad clone built specifically with the NES Classic Edition in mind.
Whereas the original NES controllers had a roughly 90-inch cable, the NES-for-ants pads have a cable that's just 31 inches long. Nyko's controller, thanks to what it calls 'SPACE-AGE Cordless Technology' with its tongue firmly in cheek, offers 30 feet of wireless play away from the machine.
It uses the port on the front of the mini NES merely to attach a wireless dongle, with the controller itself housing a micro USB port, seemingly for charging.
Of course, it's a bit anachronistic against the retro aesthetic that the NES Classic Edition is aiming for. But sometimes convenience simply wins out. The Nyko Miniboss for NES Classic Edition will go on sale on November 11, priced at $19.99, which is roughly £16, or AU$26.

Really amazing how this will probably be one of the most in demand Christmas gifts this Holiday season.
I'm not going to even bother trying to look for it. It's obvious that all stock will probably be sold out before the end of business day next Friday. And I'm not going to get up at 4 or 5am standing outside of Best Buy or Gamestop waiting until they open. I'm sure quite a few will.

I'm sure the first wave will sell out, but there should be a steady stream through the holiday. At $60 a pop, they are going to have to sell quite a few of these to make a profit. I don't think it's going to be as limited as some here think. Hard to find at first, yes. Hard to find in the long run, no.

The problem is two controllers are almost as much as the system itself.
Screw Nintendo for such an avoidable misstep. Of course, millions of these will still be sold..
