The controller cable thing is the biggest there is. Runner up? The Reset button on the console is the 'Home' button? I guess they wanted this thing authentic, making people get up and cross the room to switch games.

You guys have have been spoiled and have crazy, unrealistic expectations. I'm surprised we're even getting restore-points.

Which expectations are unrealistic in 2016?

Wifi and VC, I'll grant you. But, the short cords just shows a lack of understanding of how the majority of people have their living rooms and TV's set up. It's like selling a phone with a 6" charging cable. It will charge your phone, but it's pennywise and pound foolish in relationship to the experience your customers will have.

Maybe the cord attaching the console to the TV will be long, so you won't even need long cords for the controller? It doesn't look like something that people will have permanently hooked up to their TVs anyways; whip it out, plug it in, play, put it away.

I have a feeling we'll being seeing lots of posts and what not from parents that bought not knowing about this issue all upset after the fact. It's getting close to release date so I don't foresee Nintendo jumping in at the last second to correct it.

It's not like:
a) any of us will ever see these in abundance on retailer shelves this year and
b) the console will hold our interest long enough to permanently take up an hdmi slot year round.
If they were truly evil they'd sell a wireless NES Advantage down the line.

What stingermck said. It's not about being butthurt, it's about expecting better from the company that revolutionized gaming with the NES.
Not really. They've sold these, and resold and sold again and resold some more. They've bled the value of these games dry.
So wanting Nintendo to spend an extra dime to offer 6' cords is entitlement? Come on.
Also how is WiFi "pure entitlement" when simple streaming devices have Wi-Fi for around $20? It's not some magical expensive tech anymore. I don't need it but calling others out for wanting it is silly.

I'm sure there will be some sort of aftermarket extension cables you can get. I had a couple of those for PS2/Xbox/Gamecube.
That's the last revolutionary system they offered too
But seriously, this is just a quick holiday cash grab from Nintendo. These things will fly off the shelf from nostalgia and price alone.

Most people don't have really long USB cables or HDMI cables. Even six feet long isn't going to be enough for most people. Saving ten cents or whatever by having a short controller cord is just stupid.

Re: NES Classic Edition (30 games; 60 bucks; 11/11/2016)
My brother, not at all a 'gamer' by any real stretch, but has retro love for the NES, called me when this was first announced to ensure I pre-ordered one for him (still no pre-orders, plus he didn't think it'd be available in Canada, but it looks like it will be).
Last month, talking to him, I mentioned the AVS as far more expensive option that he probably wouldn't be interested in. We priced it all out together (AVS + Controllers + used NES carts around town + EverDrive), and despite being about 4x or 5x more expensive than the NES Classic Edition at the end of it all (including shipping to Canada, which sucks, by the way), it sounds like he's going to order the AVS.
Obviously, he's kind of a rare case, but I thought I'd share. I didn't try to push the AVS on him at all, as I figured there was no way he'd be into it. I'm not even sure I'm into it. But even if he doesn't follow through with the purchase, I'm pretty certain he won't bother with the NES Classic at all now.

I'm in the same boat. I'm really eyeing the AVS, but I own no carts and don't really feel like paying for them.
Will EverDrive work with AVS? Is it just a cartridge-shaped flash drive?
Edit: Nevermind. Found what I was looking for.

Same here. No carts (our other brother gave them away, along with our original NES, and I've never forgiven him for that bullshit), and I'm not too keen on buying a ton of new carts now. Maybe a few specific ones, but if the EverDrive works as good as it should in the AVS, then I might still pull the trigger. I don't know.

My dad was the one that did that to mine. Something about a co-worker's kid being really sick. AS IF!
I might be able to swing AVS+ED as a permanent solution, but I wouldn't mind paying Nintendo a modest fee to promote others.
Hopefully we'll hear something about NX by the time I have to make a decision.

I have a functioning N64 still. I might get the ED-64 v3 as well.
Would love to have an SNES to complete the set.

I like how this is like two weeks away and there's still no option to order online. Maybe Nintendo actually thinks it's 1985.

I heard someone talk about playing it on the radio (I think it was an NPR program) and they said the controller cord is short by design so that the console and it's reset button will be closer to the player and not all the way across the room, under the TV. I think you can use any old long USB cable to connect the console to the TV, so it won't be an issue.

Gamestop is not taking any pre-orders. They will sell it the day it's released on 11/11
Are people really going to line up in hoards at like 4 or 5am on 11/11 to get this?

If this ran off MHL that would work out well.
