To be fair, I don't think there has been any explicit confirmation it can't read Wiimotes. I suppose it's possible as long as there is speculation the guts of this thing is basically a Wii Mini. It's also possible we could get longer cords than displayed on that preproduction model. I just wouldn't get your hopes up.

It will be a hot item regardless for Christmas. The "non-geeks" will buy it up not thinking about the 3 foot controller cord and then all the kids will open it Christmas morning, hook it up, and either pull the console from the tv right away or pull the controller out of the console. Guaranteed. Nintendo doing what it does best. I guess controller wire length is the expense of the system?

That said, if this thing is really popular, I suppose a company like Mayflash might make a third-party wireless adapter that would plug into the console. Mayflash has certainly done things with those connector types (Classic Controller-to-USB adapters and such).

No one is really surprised that Nintendo fucked up another console?

It's not a console!!
I don't really see the wireless thing as a fuck up, but it will be pretty sad if they're not hearing the feedback about the wire length and hopefully that was just a quick mockup for display anyway.

If you think about it, they could have cheaped out on this even more and made it single-player only with a hard-wired controller, RCA A/V connectors, etc.
Instead, it's got a cool-looking form factor, has 2-player support with controller ports that can handle controllers that some people already have, and HDMI. It's a pretty decent overall package for what it is (a dedicated VC-in-a-box).

I'm definitely tempted to pick one up. But the guide ($27 on Amazon right now) is definitely a day one purchase.

all this back and forth rambling over this $60 retro unit not having a wireless controller? I guess the only way I see this as an issue if your TV/Consoles hookup are too far away from your recliner or couches. Then maybe the cord might be too short.

It's a pretty damn short cord in the pictures and video that even my small apartment living room would be an issue. It's a pretty valid worry.

Amazon has a page up, so pre-orders will probably start soon

On a side note, I had no idea they had a controller themed 3DS. That looks pretty freakin cool.

Yeah I saw that 3DS a while back. It's been out for a while but is pretty cool looking. I almost was going to find one but at this point I'd rather just wait since the NX is coming soon and that may involve some sort of handheld device.

For what it's worth, Amazon has had that page up since shortly after the annoucement. I've had it on my Amazon Wish List for awhile.

Yep, and I'll continue to push it, not here since I've made my point. Better to be able to play everything than just the 30 games Nintendo decides to provide. #nocontranosale
They really dropped the ball with the VC in being they could have done this a while ago, and yet still managed to mess it up.

They didn't drop the ball, they made a "Greatest hits" collection with titles a lot of people enjoy. The cost of a Contra cartridge alone is 70% of the price of one of these, different markets entirely.

My brother wants one of these, but I don't think he understands that you can't add games to it after the fact. That said, he and his kids would probably mostly play the 30 games on there... but I would imagine he'd be at least interested in an option that has more flexibility.
I'll point him to Quack's friend's console and see what he thinks.
edit: There's also a good possibility of folks hacking the NES Classic to allow sideloading of games.

^ I was thinking that, too. I have a RPi2 to do just that. I had problems with it, but need to tinker some more. I'll probably go that route when I make time for myself to do it.
But my brother doesn't. And he lives about 3000km away so I can't just give him mine He's also not very tech savvy (like, at all). He'd rather just something he can plug and play. Maybe I could set it up and send it to him, but I'm not sure.
edit: there's also RPi NES cases. People sure have thought of everything.
