Yeah, i have a rPi 1, 2 and 3, they're very impressive for the price and size.

I also want Nintendo's officially manufactured case (such as the one here) and controllers (the USB NES ones are hit and miss).

Feels like Nintendo missed an opportunity to just rerelease the NES, put third party games on it and sell cartridges of some classic NES games with it. I feel like people would have ate that up.

I'm sure it is far more cost effective to release an emulator-only box with controller connector tech from their current consoles than to re-release the original NES design and start manufacturing carts again. I don't think there's a missed opportunity here when you look at the relative costs and likely margins. People are going to eat this up and it is super cheap to make.

The ability to use NES carts seems to me like one of those things that enthusiasts to hardcore video game folks are in to (and even then, something that sounds much better on paper then in practice), but not for the mass market and average consumer that wouldn't give two shits about that.

There is something about playing games on the actual cartridges that feels more special to me (maybe just nostalgia) but there's no way Nintendo was going to go through the work of making a new NES that ran off of cartridges. It's a cool idea to think about but too many practical reasons why they wouldn't do it that way.

Do you have even the slightest clue about the video game industry and how production works?

For sure, the mass market will be thrilled to snap up this little machine with 30 games installed and ready to go. That's the selling point, whether or not the unit can read additional games.

Spoiler:
Further off-topic but this just released in Japan this week:

Wonder if we'll see a SNES version released stateside this fall. Would make sense, especially since the New 3DS plays VC SNES games now.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/08/...nt-save-points
In an interview with La Terrasse ÉNERGIE (translation via Nintendo Everything and LuigiBlood), Nintendo of Canada communications manager Julie Gagnon said the NES Classic Edition will not only include a pixel perfect option that displays each pixel as a square, but also a mode simulating the retro look from a CRT television and an option to display the games in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Very curious to see how the CRT emulation looks. No way it compares to the work of J. Kyle Pittman...
And 4:3 shouldn't even be an option; It should be the ONLY choice for aspect ratio.

Has anyone heard anything about pre-ordering? I signed up at GameStop and Best Buy for e-mail alerts and still haven't got anything and it's mid - September.

I would like to know myself. Thinking about getting one for my nephew. Everytime he visits, he wants to play my NES.

I'm really surprised pre-orders haven't gone out for this yet. Would have thought they would be out to help Nintendo gauge quantities, but I guess the assumption is they'll be hard to find and in short supply anyway.

But this isn't a traditional videogame type release that begs for pre-orders. It's more of a wide-appeal, mass-market toy item that they'll sell at every type of store possible, like Beds Bath & Beyond.

I'm not as confident as you are that will be the case; I can just as easily seeing it as the complete opposite and a short supply item for the holidays.

Maybe not right off the bat, but eventually.

You mean eventually it will be wide spread and widely available? If so, I don't see how that affects those looking for pre-orders now in case it is actually hard to find this year, so my original post is still relevant unless i'm misunderstanding you.

I just mean that more people will be gobbling it up right away. But it's not going to be some boutique specialty item. It's gonna be like that Sega system, only more successful. No one took preorders on that thing.

Hence my second reply, that I'm skeptical that will be the case. I don't necessarily think the Sega system is a good barometer for where and how well this will sell.

I'm not using it as a barometer. It's gonna sell way better. I'm just saying it's a similar, near-identical product and will be sold similarly. It's marketed more towards impulse-purchasers rather than people that would pre-order it.

I'm aware of what you're saying (and have been saying), there's a reason why I included the "where" in my reply. We're just going around in circles, I simply don't think it will be as wide spread and mass market as you do, especially when it launches and through the holidays.

What makes you assume it'll be so niche? It's initial preorder on amazon.uk sold out in minutes. They've since announced they'll have more in time for Christmas. This thing will be huge and available everywhere.

I don't think it will be niche at all, just in very short supply for the holidays given the lack of information we've heard since the announcement, the lack of pre-orders from major retailers in the US, and Nintendo's history. Maybe it will end up in stores outside of your Walmart/Target/Best Buy eventually, but not anytime soon. If anything, your Amazon UK example backs up my thoughts -

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/201...ck_is_all_gone

Due to limited stock we are only able to offer one unit per customer per address. You will be notified via email of the expected delivery date closer to the time. We will be fulfilling customer orders in the order in which they were placed, and expect to fill all pre-orders by mid-December 2016.
So yeah, initial preorders aren't even going to be completely fulfilled on release date, which tells me it won't he available everywhere at all, and they're also restricting purchases per person means limited quantities. The initial people rushing to buy this seem exactly like the preorder market.
