Frankly I don't think Galaga should have been included, same with Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. These games were considered old news by 1986 and were not important to the NES legacy at all. I suspect they were chosen for those feeling nostalgia for the old arcade era in general, not specifically for the NES.

Well, keep in mind that they also released the Famicom Mini in Japan, with many of the same games. All three of those games are included in the Famicom Mini, and were likely more relevant titles when the Famicom was released in 1983.

I can see including those anyways honestly. The NES had decent ports of all those games and I think a few classic arcade titles are a good fit for a collection like this meant for a more casual player. Gives people a little taste of everything. Plus characters like Donkey Kong and Pac Man are icons that a lot of people know just as well as Mario or Link.

I love that Galaga is on there, after Dr. Mario it's probably my most played title.

My bad

I checked the official NES page and I did not wait for the full page to appear with all the games listed

I wish they included Pro Wrestling since that was one of my favs.

Oh man, Pro Wresting on there would have been amazing. Likewise, Super Tennis is the huge game missing for the Classic SNES for me.

You've gotta do the hack. Super Tennis is indeed vital, and you can stick it right on there.

Are you talking about the NES Classic or the SNES Classic?
Not familiar with all the hacks, but are people able to now load/run SNES games on the NES machine?

I think wtsang was suggesting putting Super Tennis on the SNES Classic, as Michael Corvin suggested he was missing it on there.

That said, you can put SNES games, and games from many other consoles, onto the NES Classic. The number of buttons on an NES controller may be an issue for playing SNES games on the NES Classic, but you could buy and use an SNES Classic controller to use on the NES Classic.

Yes to all of the above

The hardware on both machines is practically identical. You can do all the same things with both. And for adding SNES functionality to the NES, the 8bitdo 2.4 controllers are a superb option. They're only $25, match the OEM SNES controllers extremely well, and solve the cord issue as well as giving you all the SNES buttons.

My Target restocked this. Looked like they had nine of them. I still haven’t grabbed one but I think if they still have them this weekend I’ll get one.

These are everywhere now. I even saw extra controllers in the wild for the first time.

These aren't an exclusive anymore? Pfft. Putting mine in the trash!

Or... feeling maybe I could try the emulator modifications I've been so nervous to try because now there's plenty of opportunity to get a second in case I screw it up...

Re: NES Classic Edition (30 games; 60 bucks; 11/11/2016)

There's no reason to be nervous about it story. There's a program that does everything for you. All you need is a PC (or a Mac with a Windows partition) with a USB port. Downloading cover art for all of the games (and reviewing and correcting it if you're anal like I am) is the longest part of the process. Actually installing the hacked kernel and games to the device takes less than 5 minutes, and there is little to no real risk.

I think the entire process for me took about 20 minutes - and that includes me looking at the cover art. It worked perfectly.

Do the menus and all that change? Ends up more a list of titles? How about the ability to save wherever, multiple save points, etc.? Still there for all titles or just the originals?

You would be well served by looking at some youtube videos on the subject, but yes, menus are the same (hence the reason for downloading cover art), and you can choose a few different ways that they are displayed. The way that I have mine displayed is that the original games that came with it are on the main menu still, but there is a folder that says "More Games" and once you go to that folder, there are sub folders with 45 games in each of them. You can also distribute all the games equally among the folders, without maintaining the original games list if you want. You can change the amount of games that are in each sub folder, and you can put up to 100 games in a folder, but the program doesn't recommend going above 45. Save functionality etc. works exactly the same as the original games.

The program also adds a hack so that you can get back to the main menu without pressing reset on the console itself (Down Arrow+Select is the default, but you can change that)

Reminder that when you're picking games to install, you might want to get Punch Out and Tecmo Bowl, even though they're already on there, if you're interested in having Mike Tyson and the original player names in the games.

Fascinating, thank you. Is there a way to do all that Game Genie stuff, too?

The program that you use to hack the console has a place where you can put in Game Genie codes for each game if you want to, I'm not sure how that part of it works once you've loaded it though. I never tried it.
