Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (aka Where's the buzz?)

Developer: EA Dice
Release Date: June 7, 2016
EA Access Release: June 2, 2016

wiki:

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a first-person action-adventure game in which players take control of Faith Connors as she progresses through a futuristic city called Glass. Similar to the original Mirror's Edge, players traverse the city using aspects of urban exploration and parkour movements to complete missions and evade enemies or knock them off of their feet. Players can also make use of environmental objects such as zip-lines and ledges, and equipment including Mag Rope and Disruptor to travel across buildings.

Combat mechanics of the game received an overhaul and a new combat system was developed as traversal is greatly emphasized in the game. Also, though only used sparingly in the previous game, Mirror's Edge Catalyst has removed the use of guns by the player altogether, focusing on Faith's running and parkour movements and quick melee-style attacks to take down or evade her enemies. Faith enters focus mode while she is running. With sufficient focus Faith can evade bullets from enemies. According to Sara Jansson, the senior producer of the game, the combat and fighting featured will be an extension to the game's movement instead of a separated set. When Faith is performing a finishing move, the game switches to a third-person perspective.

The game was announced soon after as a prequel to Mirror's Edge showcasing the origins of Faith, and will use the newer Frostbite 3 engine, instead of the Unreal Engine used in the first game. However, more recently Sara Jansson stated that the game is not being seen as either a reboot or a prequel.

In January 2014, writer Rhianna Pratchett announced on Twitter that she would not be involved with the new game and neither would most of the original team.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst contains several multiplayer features, which DICE calls Social Play. While there are no live co-operative multiplayer or side-by-side competitive modes, the game features asynchronous multiplayer in which a player's actions in the game can affect the world for other players' games.

Mirror's Edge remains one of my top 5 games of last gen, it was such a unique experience. Also finishing without guns and only using melee was one of the more satisfying gaming experiences of last gen for me. It also featured a gorgeous well lit city which was a stark contrast to the Gears of Wars, Call of Dutys and nearly every other FPS at the time.

Needless to say, I've been waiting a long time to revisit Faith and this world.

I'm torn though, my heart wants this on day one, but given the original's outcome, my brain and wallet are telling me to wait a week or two. I'd also be all over that controller if it was first party and wireless.

I really enjoyed the first game, but never did finish it. It also made me dizzy :( I'm still interested in this though, but will wait for reviews and probably not a release day buy for me.

Will play it with EA Access for a few hours. Might rent it. Look forward to it dropping to the Vault in 2017. But I wouldn't buy it. Didn't like the first one enough, and too big a backlog to buy this one.

Wasn't a fan of the first one. Didn't get the hype.

Hype was because it was different. But of course that's before we were subjected to 15,000 different Endless Runner games on our mobile devices.

Re: Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (aka Where's the buzz?)

Endless runner games aren't quite the same.

I'm not on my XO right now, but we should be able to download and play a few hours of it on EA Access now, right?

edit : Yup

You can try out six hours of Mirror's Edge Catalyst on EA Access and Origin Access now.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is the latest game to get a Play First Trial on EA Access (Xbox One) and Origin Access (PC). If you're a subscriber to either of these services, you can now play the upcoming open-world title for up to six hours, while experiencing 10 missions over two districts.

The latest game in the Mirror's Edge series explores the history of the main character, Faith, and explains how she goes from a runner to a heroine. Like the original Mirror's Edge, you'll be navigating a stark city in first-person simply by running, jumping, and using various acrobatic moves.

If you play in this free trial, your saves will carry over to the full game once it launches, so you won't have to worry about redoing content.

I'd love to get that steelbook, but I'm not paying $200 for all that other junk.

I'd love to get that controller, but I'm not buying a wired version.

Bummers all around. :(

Indeed on both counts, although the statue is kinda cool. That would have been a $100 set a few years ago. $200 is asinine.

I wonder when reviews hit, i'm curious about the game but there really doesn't seem to be much hype for it.

Thanks to a known Xbox Live glitch in account authorization, I can't log into my EA Access account since yesterday so I haven't even been able to download the Trial.

I'm working my way through Life is Strange and Pneuma but hope to have both finished by Tuesday. I have plenty more in my backlog but I think I'm gonna bite. I have a $5 RZ cert burning a hole in my pocket, coupled with the GCU discount and my wallet will be lighter Tuesday night.

6.8 from IGN.

Re: Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (aka Where's the buzz?)

That's disappointing. I wasn't expecting 9s, but that seems low, and a weaker game than the last one.
I also don't like that it's a prequel, nor that it's an "open world".

Re: Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (aka Where's the buzz?)

It's currently at 72 on Metacritic. Quite low for a big EA sequel. I STILL can't log into my EA Access account so I haven't yet tried it. I am getting a copy from Gamefly shipped to me so at least I'll have it soon.

I'm interested. But the reason I didn't jump on it at release was because it just seems like the type of title that will be $20 90 days after release.
