I think lots of games these days have gigantic day one patches that would make the game almost unplayable once the download servers go down, even if they don't have a large multiplayer component. And then you have the crap like NBA 2K where after a few years they shut down the servers and major features like myplayer (which are playable single player otherwise) are just gone completely, mainly because of the microtransactions. With Nintendo finally going to these keys they were basically my last console I was all in on physical (and a ton of my favorite switch games are either not available physically or are available in such limited quantities that it doesn't make sense to buy them physically)

I'm fine with whatever still. I prefer digital for most titles, but will buy physical editions as collectors items (like recently buying Lunar Remastered on the PS4 to go with my Lunar Complete titles for the PSX)

I'm not particularly young anymore, the idea of collecting on a large scale isn't as appealing as it once was.

I've been digital only for a long time. I very rarely buy games brand new. Even when I was buying discs, I'd often get them from thrift stores or pawn shops, so the resale prices were already really low. Once PS+ came along, I pretty much only use that service's "free" games. Once every year or two I'll actually buy a game, and that's generally just for my son to play. As far as losing access to old games? It's not really an issue for me. It's even more rare that I replay an original game. If it's a remake, like Dead Space, I'm more likely to play it, but that's basically a new game.

I can understand why some people want physical games. Namely those who buy new and want to trade or sell them to fund the next game.

I'm still for whatever is cheapest. I thought I'd lean more physical but I'm not caught up in the day & date releases anymore and got rid of the FOMO. By the time I'm ready to buy something, it's been long enough that the digital version is cheap enough/on sale, so I go for that version. So this generation has flipped my percentages, so now I'm more digital. The Switch definitely tipped the scales too. Despite using as a tv console 98% of the time, I haven't bought a single physical game. Keeping track of physical cartridges just seems quaint for a mobile system in the 2020s.

I think I'm just strange because I really enjoy quaint. Especially with the cartridges. To me the Switch cartridges and case are the perfect physical media form. The cartridges are small enough to be able to keep in a small enough space but big enough to handle easily and have room to see the artwork. I like keeping them in my case and organizing them in order of series and looking at them and choosing which one to put in.

Agreed on the Switch cartridges, there is just something about them.
I have done a 180 on the physical media issue and buy digital 95% of the time now for movies and games on PS5, yet I still go with physical copies for Switch if available.

Someone doesn't have a ton of digital switch games they have to scroll through, alphabetically, in that god awful eshop whenever they want to redownload something. Oh and now I have to keep track of which system has "checked out" the game as well. ;)

This is not true anymore, the digital sharing system is actually ideal for that exact use case.

The benefit of physical on switch is that you don't take up space unless large updates are needed (which are fewer than other platforms). For the other two, even if you buy the disc not only does it take forever to load it into the system (since it copies all the data into the system, thus saving no space), you often need huge downloads as well. One of my pet peeves is not being able to play a PS5/Xbox game like right when you get it, unlike Switch.

I'm curious to see how well the digital sharing works, but I feel like your second point is more salient with multiple Switches as well. With cartridges, one of my kids can usually just grab any game, pop it in and be playing it just about instantly on their own Lite. Even if the sharing is smooth, they'll still have to download something 'loaned' to them digitally, which could take quite a while depending on the game.

True, that initial download could take a bit. But, for example, my daughter wants to play the new Fantasy Life game but I don't necessarily want to buy it on her account, and can now "share" it onto her switch lite instead of the switch that is our primary console. That's actually pretty cool (even if it does come at the cost of being able to play multiplayer with one digital copy)
