I got it, too. It’s beautiful and amazing. The most fun I’ve had with a JRPG in a long time.

I'm having as much fun as I did when I first played the original.

If I loved DQVIII for PS2, will I enjoy this one as well?

This looks good. I'm pretty set with JRPGs having barely scratched the surface of Octopath Traveler (and loving it) and not even opening my recent Ni No Kuni 2 purchase. But I'm hoping for a Best Buy pre-Black Friday sale on this with GCU. I would be happy to pick it up then.

I bought it at launch just to support it but I'm probably going to play Spider-Man first just because I just got done spending 80+ hours in Octopath so I need a break.

This is where I'm at too. Just finished Octopath today as a matter of fact. I'm really looking forward to getting into this, but I'll need a bit of a palate cleanser before jumping into another big JRPG and Spidey is dropping at the perfect time.

Thanks! Thinking about picking this up soon even though my PS4/Switch backlog is pretty large.

I'm about 4 hours in. Could anyone tell me what the little ghost-looking creatures are that I see from time to time? They walk a bit and disappear. I'm trying to avoid any sites like Reddit which may have spoilers not tagged.

Consider them world detail. They were tied to the gameplay in the 3DS version of the game, but that didn't carry over to the PS4.

Oh, there's nothing to do with them later on? So no need for me to remember where I'm seeing them? I've been marking it down just in case.

Re: Dragon Quest XI (9/4/18; PS4/PC)

Been playing Dragon Quest XI. Haven't made a lot of progress story-wise cause I've been spending all my time on side-quest stuff and building skill points. I'm apparently way over leveled at this point though as I should be around level 15 but instead I'm around level 29. :/ Game is easy as heck as a result. I've got around 28 hours of playtime but I'm just at the port town of Gondolia.

Thread title could use updating now that the definitive version is out on Switch.

Re: Dragon Quest XI (9/4/18; PS4/PC)

Played this last year on PC and now playing through it again on Switch for 16-bit mode. Tried playing a little in normal mode and while the visuals are fine(better with Switch docked) they're not quite as good as PS4/PC. Still, having orchestrated music and all the other content and QoL improvements make this the version to play if you haven't already. One of the best JRPG's to come out in the last decade.

I'm still hoping all of those Switch-exclusive "upgrades" are eventually available on PS4 & PC.

So a year later, the Definitive "S" Edition (whatever that means) released on Xbox and is also available via Game Pass for PC and console.
I'm about 6 hours in - I just finished working with the guy to get the thing he was looking for.
Spoiler:

It's pretty linear so far, which I'm OK with, i like to at least know a general direction I should be going in.
Combat is quite simple and simplistic so far, I rarely use spells or pep powers and only had to heal in battle a couple times. Main character is using a sword and the other party member switches between dagger and boomerang.
I'm assuming/hoping it gets a little more advanced in the near future? I don't want a do everything, totally open world game, but a little more complexity or challenge in battle, or more skills to do cool stuff, would be nice.
It's definitely very pretty though cartoonish (which I was expected in a DQ game.)
Is there a way, later, to re-spec skill points?
Anyway, I like the classic turn based JRPGs so it's been enjoyable so far.

Dragon Quest is always very simple in nature. Also practically for the full game you'll just spam the same attacks over and over as they'll always do the most damage.

With the Hero, Greatswords will be more powerful 98% of the game and he doesn't benefit much from a shield due to not really having any skills dedicated for it. Early game Helichopter (group attack) and Unbridled Blade (single enemy attack) are his two main attacks. Once you get Sword Dance though that'll be practically all you ever use from that point on.

Erik swaps between Knifes for single enemy attacks and daggers for groups. His main attacks early on is to poison the enemy then use Victimizer to practically one shot anything. You'll want to get dual-wielding for him as soon as possible. Later in the game you'll get Divide and Dual-Duality. Divide basically multiplies his next attack while Dual-Duality makes it so off-hand damage isn't nerfed. This along with Victimizer will practically one-shot anything in the game. Late game it's possible to swap to Swords, they'll do less damage than his Knife combos can do overall but don't take turns getting set up or needing to poison the enemy, etc so some people just like to get right to attacking and opt for swords at that point with skills like Critical Claim and Falcon Slash.

As for using spells, other than healing you'll do sometimes from random characters, really the use of spell casting is left to later party members you get: Veronica your black mage, and Selena your white mage. Another member you might occasionally use buff spells but it's more likely you'll just use one of these two.

As for being linear. It does open up a little later and allows you to do some events in any order you want, but for the most part the game is really linear and doesn't try to stray from it.

And yeah, Dragon Quest is designed by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame so as long as it exists it'll keep the cartoony look with it's characters and iconic monsters.

Re-spec skill points can happen at any Church, Priest, or Save point. Though it costs you a bit of gold to do.

I beat the original version last year on PS4, and then bought the definitive version this year on PC when it came out a few weeks ago. Currently made it to Act 3 (post game) already.

OK - I just got to where my party

and the game got much more interesting. I'm actually doing different things in combat now, and using abilities/spells and changing equipment.
I did finally apply my skill points. Hero is using Greatsword, Erik is using boomerang and knife. I am targeting dual-wield.
(Erik's voice acting is weird - his accent keeps changing.)

Will I find out later in the story?

Anyway, my interest is re-piqued.

Tockles/Tockington, do the altars reference events in previous DQs? I've only played DQVIII before this and honestly don't remember specifics.

Re: Dragon Quest XI (9/4/18; PS4/PC)

Playing my first DQ game thanks to gamepass, I always thought Dragon’s Quest was an action RPG, which I’m generally tired of, happy to be wrong since Turn Based RPGs are few and far between.
