Why do you play video games?
 

i'm really not actually sure. i rarely play due to time, hoping to rectify that now that school is over and going to dive in AK, but for the life of me i can't figure out why i seem to like to play...

We play video games because they're fun. This question is like asking why we like movies or TV or masturbation. They're all fun activities, so that's we why do them.

For the fun. It comes in waves though....Hadn't really played my Wii U lately, but my brother sent me Toad Tracker and I've really been playing the hell outta it.

Because it's a more immersive experience than watching a movie. I still like watching movies, though.

I'm not really a big gamer but like others in here have mentioned mostly for entertainment and escapism when I choose to play. No different than movies, tv shows, books/comics, or any other hobby that floats your boat.

As others have said it's fun and entertaining to explore new and different worlds and in the case of video games over other formats, we can actually interact with them thus providing a different level of immersion and interactivity.

And in other cases, it's just fun to shoot things and blow things up.

I like playing an NBA game that I have control of. I also like playing GM and getting rid of garbage players who aren't contributing.

to kill time when i have it, but the game has to actually be fun to play which seems to be missing from a lot of big titles, which create immersive worlds and then forget to make key elements, like combat, fun.

Back in 2006 I had a series of strokes. My then girlfriend (now wife) bought me a DS with Brain Age to play and exercise my brain a bit. Then I started buying some other games, then a Wii, then a 360.

I think if you put a little more thought into your posts and wrote them so that they actually encourage discussion, people wouldn't be so quick to turn on them. The obvious answer to why we play video games is because we like them. If you had asked what is it that we like about video games and then discussed some possible options (they're challenging, good for blowing off steam, social activity w/friends), the response might be different. The underlying question isn't really any different, but it comes off as less stone-y and encourages more thoughtful conversation.

I like to see other worlds and stories being fleshed out due to my actions. Even on-rails shooters typically have instances of cause and effect, making my choices interesting. Games like Fallout that have serious results to my actions are even better.

It's one form of relaxing entertainment I have, along with watching a movie or reading.
