I can't even tell what I'm looking at there in terms of the face... is it an oval tablet screen with physical controls set into the screen face?

Around six seconds in, you'll see the source of this image from a mobile Unreal Engine 4 demo.

Nintendo doing Nintendo things!

wait, what? The controller has a screen?
Like that? with physical buttons over the screen?

Adam Tyner 03-18-16 05:21 PM

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

Supposedly they're virtual buttons with haptic feedback.

I can't really think of how a controller/screen like that would add anything to the way we generally play games right now, or enhance the experience. I expect Nintendo to have a decent reason though, if this is legit.

Like the decent reason they stuck a crappy tablet in the center of their last console's controller?

Yes? :p The form and function may not have panned out, and I was never a big fan from the initial announcement, but at least you can see the tangible benefits on paper (like remote play, certain games taking advantage of the extra screen). I think hardware and technology limitations at the time, among other things, didn't help either.

All those at least look better to me then this thing.

Can't tell you how many times I've been playing my Vita and thought of how much better the experience would have been if only the thumb sticks were in the middle of the playfield and if my hands were covering half of the screen at the time.

More New Images Of Nintendo NX Controller Appear.

https://sickr.files.wordpress.com/20...200&h=0&crop=1

New images have appeared on Reddit that are supposed to be of the Nintendo NX controller. They follow the existing images we have seen so far which match the patent that Nintendo had previously issued. Here’s the details including the screen shots.

•Only the upper ‘nubs’ of the sticks move. The bottom part is static (kind of like the circle pad, but it moves along the bottom ‘sphere’.

•The rollers on the top feel and look pretty much identical to a mouse scroll-wheel. Though I do don’t believe this will be the final design.

•Haptic feedback is feels like Apples ‘taptic’ engine. Not like regular rumble.
•3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom

I bet this is going to be one of those cases where the NX is the worst kept secret leading up to the announce.

Looks like a mini Vita.

Good lord. If that's really the controller, the NX will likely be the first Nintendo console I don't own.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

First off, I'm a WiiU owner, fan, and at times, even apologist.

Having said that, I think my biggest issue with this controller is that I don't get what it could possibly bring to anything that the WiiU controller doesn't already do. Regardless of if you like the WiiU controller or not, this looks just like a smaller, more stylized version of it.

I'm sure I had a strange reaction the original Wii controller, but I remember at least thinking "This could be interesting". While underutilized, the WiiU controller at least presents some pretty obvious possibilities to how it could/should be used. This one...I just don't...get.

Obviously these are leaked photos and not press announcements, and there's been no explanation from Nintendo or anyone else, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what this possibly brings to the table. If you're supposed to be seeing the whole game on the screen, the sticks (and your hands) are obscuring part of it. If you're not supposed to be seeing the whole game on the screen, then who cares about having a controller that's a screen? If you're playing games on it and using it as a primary or secondary screen, how is that any different from the WiiU?

I guess what I'm saying is: What am I missing?

There's the possibility that it's a handheld device and not the controller for a console (unless it somehow serves as both?). The dude who posted it said it's the console controller, though. And then there's the possibility that this is an elaborate hoax.

Another non standard controller? Nintendo gon' Nintendo.

The only thing that kind of makes sense is merging the console and handheld market. That's probably the reason behind the analog nubs versus standard sticks.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

This has to be an early April Fools joke, right? Or the successor to the 3DS that can also connect via WiFi to the console to act as a secondary controller or something. Nintendo is nuts and all but they can't be that crazy to make that thing their standard controller for their next console.

Count me as another that's sick of Nintendo's stupid gimmicky controllers. Just make something more basic that's functional.

Here's an article about the fakes if you are interested in reading it.
