Just because manufacturers release new graphics cards and cpu's yearly, doesn't mean you have to upgrade. I'm still using an i5-2500K that I purchased back in... 2011? My GPU was a 7970 that I also had for many years, until I recently replaced it with a R9 290X. I didn't even really need to replace it, since I could still run most games at High/Max settings, but I did so because it was basically no cost to me.

It only gets out of hand if you let it get out of hand. There's no need to upgrade yearly, or even biyearly.
