AOL shutting down Joystiq

http://kotaku.com/sources-aol-shutti...tiq-1681996505

I don't read Joystiq that much, but sucks to see anyway.

AOL is preparing to shut down the video game website Joystiq after over ten years of publication, according to people familiar with the situation.

It's unclear exactly when Joystiq will close, but we've heard that this is connected to a larger-scale reorganization planned by AOL, the longrunning media company that has had more than a few struggles in recent years. Even as they close the gaming news site, AOL may use the name "Joystiq" for other branding purposes, according to one person familiar with goings-on at the company.

Oh no, I love Joystiq!

Kind of funny to see Joystiq report on the rumor.

http://www.joystiq.com/2015/01/27/jo...lshare_twitter

'AOL is likely to shutter' Joystiq, reports Recode. Hey, wait a minute... that's us! Well, we may as well handle this the same way we've been covering the video game industry for ten years.

"We do not comment on rumor and speculation," one staffer told us, wishing to remain anonymous, preparing for their lucrative PR career. Others are still trying to figure out next steps. Another anonymous staffer said, "We're still working until we can't."

Sources tell Joystiq that the staff is aware of the closure, but corporate hasn't officially told them, so they are unable to acknowledge anything out of concern that it will cause immediate shutdown. We've reached out for more information. We will update, as we always have, when we know more.

That sucks, Joystiq is one of the better gaming blogs out there after Kotaku changed to covering more Japanese and Game culture than, you know, games.

Yeah Kotaku is shit now. I switched back to *shudder* gamespot for news.

I can't tell if this is an endorsement

Am I the only one that still uses a newsfeed reader? That's the best way to skim through all your favorite sites.

But yeah, I hate when I'm in my iPhone and want to check a Joystiq article. Their mobile interface is not great. Or desktop.

Yeah I have video game news in my HTC feed, but like you said some sites aren't great for mobile.

I'd still be using my 7 aol screen names for spam and coupons if I hadn't forgotten the password and gotten locked out a couple years ago.

AOL shutting anything down that isn't AOL doesn't make sense.

Maybe there's a chance it'll come back. AOL killed Comics Alliance a couple years back, and a smaller network picked 'em up afterwards.

A travesty. Joystiq has more integrity than just about any other gaming journalism site in existence.

They only recently announced that they were going to drop review scores going forward, and a lot of people were looking forward to seeing how that worked out.

I also loved the weekly podcast.

Hopefully the pieces can be picked up somehow.

An early glimpse of the future without real games journalism:

With due respect and sympathy for those who lost jobs, this is a space that will be filled. For every EGM, 1UP or Joystiq that closes, somebody creates a Giant Bomb or Polygon. I'm not a fan of either Giant Bomb or Polygon, but that's not the point. "Real games journalism" (whatever that means) is alive and well, and as a practical matter, I haven't regularly looked at Joystiq for years.

Won't they just do podcasts Independantly? When a company shuts down that shouldn't prevent the guys from branching out and doing their own thing? Those guys over at IGN were popular enough to start up their own YouTube channel and I think a website?

AOL also owns sites like Engadget and TechCrunch. I guess people don't realize they're not the dial up ISP sending you discs in the mail that they used to be :p

Yeah, but they're not doing themselves any favors but not changing their name to something more fitting for their current incarnation.

People will forever associate AOL with the 90s.

Joystiq is being folded (along with TUAW) into Engadget. 20 layoffs from Joystiq/Massively, part of the 150 layoffs in all across all of AOL.

I used to like Joystiq, but since I do most of my browsing on a tablet or phone, and their new mobile design is steaming shit, I took them out of my rotation a long time ago.

Re: AOL shutting down Joystiq

Being a part of Engadget sounds cool, since I still read that site regularly and would just mean seeing some more gaming news on there.

I only occasionally went to Joystiq, and they never really seemed to have much content and news honestly.

Similar deal here. Any website I see that uses Onswipe's tech for mobile/tablet -- y'know, where you get redirected, the page semi-freezes as you see that spinning icon, and then you have to read everything horizontally like a magazine instead of scrolling up/down (assuming your browser doesn't crash) -- is an instant close.
