Re: Why can't I get motivated to play?
All you need is a change-up. I've been through these cycles before and they usually happen when my free time gets squeezed. That's when I find it hard to get motivated to dig into games that require large time investments to make satisfactory progress. And that's where handhelds come in. I've found that playing pick up and play games on handhelds (like turn-based strategy games) are just the ticket when I'm in a gaming "rut." I love the game suspend feature. I recently played through Battle for Atluma on the PSP (a Magic the Gathering type of card game) that was a perfect answer to scratching the gaming itch during whatever free time I had. Dust off a handheld and kick back on the couch with a good pick up and play game.

I've felt this way since I picked up an Xbox 360 back in 2007.
I just couldn't get into Grand Theft Auto 4. (I use to play the pc versions of GTA3 and Vice City very obsessively more than a decade ago).
The few other Xbox 360 games I purchased, I also couldn't get into at all. (No point in purchasing any further consoles, nor any current pc games).

Resident Evil isn't really like that, from what I remember. Maybe it would be easier using a suspend feature, but they limit you on saving options to increase the tension...

All this. So many games and media options now a days. Paralyzed by choice. When I was a kid with just a few games that wasn't a problem

It comes and goes, sometimes I feel like it's a massive waste of time and I could be doing better things with my life. Othertimes I don't want to leave the couch and so I'll go punch a hooker or two.

I get in those sorts of ruts as well. It usually means I need to switch up game styles or game tones. Like maybe I'm burned out on 'dark' games and need to pop in a Lego game. Or I'm burned out on huge open worlds and need to play a more linear FPS.

I've decided I'm a "one game at a time" person now. And I have no desire to revisit. I'm having a blast with Far Cry 4 but the second it's over, I'm selling it to Amazon. Too many other things to play to ever consider going back to something I've already beaten.
So I'm gaming pretty regularly, but just not with very many games.
