League of Legends beginner tips?

I did a search for LoL threads and didn't find one. I want to see what all the fuss is about with this popular game. Didn't know if we had any LoL vets here and if they had any good tips to offer for someone brand new to the game. What champion should I use to start with? I don't mind if he/she is free or not, I just want to start with a good one. Even if he/she has a learning curve that doesn' make any difference to me. I don't have alot of gaming time so I only have time for learning one champion right now, so I want a strong one.

I fiddled with Ashe a couple of nights ago and succeeded in making a player irrate in seconds. He didn't want me in his lane for some reason and said he would report me . I was like "dude I am new chill the fuck out". He was yelling all of this LoL jargon that I understood as much as I understand how to read Klingon.

I have heard this community isn't all that welcoming to noobs.

I tried to play League and hated it because I seemed to always get yelled at for not knowing what to do  A lot of players create alternate "smurf" accounts for some reason, which I never did understand. I have a few friends that work at Riot games that tried to get me to play, and I never did get in to it.

I don't have any tips myself, as I only got to level 8 or so. But you can search for build guides for each character that tell you what items to buy and what skills to upgrade first, which is A nice way to start. These can get pretty in depth but should give you an idea of what to do - http://www.mobafire.com/

I don't understand much of LoL. Do you have to listen to other people when starting out? Can't you just mute them? I get that teamplay is important, but how important in the beginning?

It's pretty important, since a few deaths early on can mean a huge advantage to the other team and leveling up quickly. Luckily it's all in game chat and not voice chat. I had a really heard time learning the game and characters, as veterans know and expect what you should be doing with each character and some folks seem to yell at you for going to the wrong lane, not helping, dying early, etc.

At least that's been my short experience with the game.

The LoL community makes Neogaf look like the friendliest place on earth and Dota is not much better. Honestly, if you're dedicated to playing it you might want to check out some starter videos on YouTube first to avoid situations like the original post.

gamers throwing fits doesn't really bother me...i find it pretty comical when people take games so seriously.

That's a dumb way to keep your user base down by being so unwelcoming of new players. Don't you want the game to become more and more popular to succeed?
When I was on WOW for a few months the community seemed very nice and helpful to newcomers.
Can they seriously ban you for not being good at the game?

Well, League of Legends is basically the most popular game in the world so they seem to be doing ok :p

And I haven't heard of anyone getting banned for not being good. There's a basic player rating system after each match that lets you rate players for being helpful and having good teamwork or whatever.
