Surprisingly, I have this urge to physically harm people that talk bad about the Dreamcast.

I'm going with the Wii. Not because gamers thought it was a great system but because the sales #'s makes it seem way better than it really was.

Re: Most overrated video game console?

I don't really see the Wii as being overrated, since I never really hear people talking about how great it was as a system. Yeah it sold a shit ton, but thats different from what people actually think of it. Especially in the last few years of its life. Overrated maybe in it's first couple years on the market, but not looking back in hindsight.

Similar with the XBox One, the way most people I see/hear talk about it it's not like people are calling it the greatest thing ever either or even rating it highly.

Something being "overrated" to me is different from just sales, technical ability, power, etc.

That's a helluva catalog (and just scratching the surface of the entire library) for a few developers.

But the problem with the N64 is that the great majority of that library has aged horribly. No one wants to play those games anyone, and if they do, they'll get a headache and go blind. Now compare that library to the best games for the SNES. Not only do people still play those games, they still sell pretty well as downloadable games on the WiiU, whereas no one is buying N64 games anymore.

 Dreamcast. And speaking of controllers, that controller was good for one thing, and one thing only... carpal tunnel. I'm convinced the only reason the Dreamcast is so revered is because it was so easy to pirate games.
DC's games have aged alright, and a lot of them are still pretty fun, though in retrospect, it's not as great as it's level of reverence would have you believe.

Re: Most overrated video game console?

In retrospect the Dreamcast had very few "hits" or "classics", it's more of a "cult classic" game console and that's why it has such a passionate following - even its B-titles were pretty fun. The games may not be incredible but they were wonderfully quirky and pretty original. While I'd never argue it had its limitations, I got a lot more use out of my DC in its short life than I did my Wii, Xbox, PS2 or PS3 (Xbox 360 got used a good bit, PS4 is getting decent use).

Most of the good stuff from the DC was eventually ported to other platforms. Plus it was a massive step up from everything else available at the time (PSX, N64, Saturn, etc; )

Alas it did get a bigger post-mortem following that expected

But yes, the controller sucked.

Doesn't the Wii have to be 'rated' before we can call it overrated? The gaming community pretty much hated the Wii from day one.

Nintendo had a way to tap into kids/The Family gamers. XBox/Playstation avoided that demo for quite some time.

The second commercial has nothing to do with the 2600 so I fail to see the relevance. I've never heard of anyone rating the Atari XE very high.

The Atari VCS/2600 came out in 1977. It was revolutionary. It paved the way for the home video game market and most importantly it had a ton of games that were fun. The NES and Sega Master Systems came out in the mid-80s and represented the bump you'd expect from a subsequent video game generation, but I don't see how that has any bearing on how highly-rated the 2600 was and still is in video game console history. In fact, your Jr. model commercial brings up a good counter-argument. That model sold tens of millions of units while the Nintendo and Sega were dominating the home market, which says something about how great the games for the 2600 were.

Full disclosure: I never had a 2600 as a kid, but I love playing it now.

Well said. The 2600 was a superior system for its day and survived far longer than anyone would have expected. You can still purchase a version of it today in those little joysticks that contain the electronics and dozens of games for ~$25 or so. They seem to come out every Christmas. In spite of the lo-res graphics many of the games are still quite fun to play.

I would. I purchased my son a XEGS for Christmas one year mainly because it's a computer (a redesigned 65XE, fully compatible with the entire 400/800 software/hardware line and my existing game library - I had a 800) disguised as a video game system.

This... absolutely the worst console ever and extremely over-hyped.

The times I played a Intellivision it was so laggy as to be almost unplayable. I never understood how anyone could actually play a game on that system and be happy.

The way consoles/games aged is irrelevant. Even at that I'd easily revisit any game on the list I posted over PS1 games. Now those have aged horribly. Also the fact that some of those games have been remade is a testament to the game itself and not the limitations of the console.

Chess, N64 was not the first with an analog stick. I believe it was the Saturn.

Why, just because you say so?
I strongly disagree with that assertion, because it's with hindsight and seeing how games have aged, that you can clearly see if and how something was overrated.

That, I agree with. At least the games using polygons, as a game like Symphony of The Night is still up there as one of my favorites of all time, but that was a rare thing on the PS1.

Saturn didn't get an analog stick until Nights, which came out a couple weeks after the N64, and that controller got a minimum of use outside of Nights.

Some say the 5200 had analog, but I've taken a couple of those controllers apart, and they sure looked digital to me.

Re: Most overrated video game console?

I wouldn't say the Dreamcast was overrated. Lots of the games still hold up well and I would say it easily beat Nintendo's offering for that console cycle but it fell behind Sony. I do agree with it being somewhat of a cult system however.

For me I think the Wii is the most overrated. It sold like gangbusters and Wii Sports made the console seem like an amazing leap between gamer interactivity and what's on screen making you "feel" like you were really in the game. In reality most of the games were shovel ware that came out(I'd say about 90%) and there is only a handful that were actually any good. Not to mention the waggle controls really showed what a terrible idea it was and how annoying it became when playing a game.

I think the runner up is the PS1. It has a lot of classic games and it was the console which finally made Nintendo realize that cartridges were not needed anymore. But the technology really wasn't there for most of the games to be using polygons yet.

Dreamcast over Gamecube? With all due respect to Dreamcast, not even close. Gamecube was terrific.

Metroid Prime 1/2, RE4, Smash Melee, two Zeldas, Sunshine, Double Dash, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Pikmen, Mario Strikers, Eternal Darkness, Rogue Leader, Wave Race, tons more and a generation worth of cross-platform with PS2. Also, the controller was one of the best of all time.

as equally ironic as you picking a product that's been out for a grand total of 8 months. one that you consistently railed on pre and post-release.

Christ, not this shit.

For what it's worth, like I said earlier I don't see how the Xbox One is overrated when (from my perspective, anyway) it's mostly been railed on by people. Maybe it's just me, but "overrated" is different from just "system I don't like." Like I don't see how the Wii U would be overrated by any means, unless you're just addressing LosingMyMind :p

Exactly. The N64 was and is deservedly highly-rated primarily because of the extremely fun multi-player games (and maybe Super Mario 64). I believe it was the first popular console to come with four controller ports built-in (vs. the typical two) and Nintendo backed up that design decision with some awesome 4-player games. It was tailor-made for dorm room and fraternity house gaming action.
