Re: Just Cause 3 (12/1/2015)

Finished! Well, mostly. I wound up with 95% total because there's no way I'm five-gear-ing all of the challenges, but I have 100% for everything else. There's some extremely cool stuff to unlock through the collectibles, and I'm not sure at this point if that was a plus or a minus to do before finishing Di Ravello. (Without getting into spoilers, there's one vehicle in particular that makes the final battle a total cakewalk.) There's a weapon you unlock at the very, very end that makes me want to replay the entire thing all over again.

Love it, love it, love it. Seriously might wind up being my Game of the Year.

I hate to shit on your parade but I have been sitting here for 5 minutes and counting waiting to replay a challenge. This loading length is for the birds.

As if the load times aren't bad enough, the challenges themselves are mostly shit. Not only are they not that fun, they totally fuck with game flow and immersion, even if they didn't have no loading. But mostly, hiding the upgrades behind them is just a terrible idea and a total waste of time.

Could not agree more strongly. Challenges are boring, frustrating and suck. I hate that they're required for upgrades.

It's a mix for me. I really disliked the gun range challenges, and the jet frenzies weren't the least bit fun. Part of the loop is that it's not really possible to five-star a lot of these on the first try. The idea is that you're meant to come back to them -- to use something other than the default vehicle/weapon once you've unlocked more, to experiment with other things nearby (say, using an assault chopper during a sniper rifle challenge), and to attempt them again using mods you've earned along the way.

You also don't have to five-star all challenges to unlock all mods. I was able to get at least three gears on nearly all of 'em without much effort, and I'm no great shakes as a gamer.

It's a flawed system to be sure, but I went in expecting to hate it and was surprised how much I somewhere between liked and didn't mind it. There is noooooo chance of me trying to go for five gears across the board, though!

How can "a flawed system to be sure" be your game of the year? That just seems way off base. I've been reading everyone else's comments and I'm not sure I even want to invest in this one. I loved 2 but this one sounds like a real downer, and you're calling it game of the year?

If you're on the PS4 just hit the PS button to go Home, then select another game, when it asks if you want to shut down JC3 hit no, then select JC3 again and your load time will be over in a snap. Sounds convoluted, and it is, but it's really just a five button press action that takes less than 5 seconds and no more stalled load screens.

What the hell? I'm going to try this tonight. But if this works, they'd better patch the game ASAP because the load times are clearly bogus.

That workaround does not always work. Sometimes it cuts it down and other times you are still just waiting for a few minutes. It is a memory problem.

I just play with an iPad by my side and when I'm in the "Penalty Box", I just browse the internet while I wait. Best of both worlds - video games and world wide web!

Well, I'm saying it might be my Game of the Year. The highs are so high that they more than make up for the lows. YMMV. I know that Witcher III is a better game, and I'd put Ori & the Blind Forest in the running too, but I had more fun with this.

I just have such a blast soaring around in the wing suit blowing shit up and experimenting with the tethers that it makes the clunkier stuff easier to swallow. My criticisms would be that the campaign is short, incredibly easy, and not all that interesting, liberating towns/outposts can feel kind of "same-y" after a while, the Fast Travel unlocks via the Rebel Shrines are pointless (since most people won't complete that until they've freed a province, which offers free fast travel anyway), I wish I could turn off the leaderboard notifications (although I was doing really well at 'em!) and/or completely turn off the need to connect to S/E's servers, and that some of the challenges are stupidly, obnoxiously difficult. At the same time, put me in a monster truck, hand me a glorified nuke, let me tether a soldier to a rocket, or inspire me to airlift a massive boat out of a lake, and I'm addicted. I really did enjoy most of the challenges as well, although not remotely enough to try to five-gear them.

I disconnect my PS4 from the internet every time I boot up JC3. Not only does it get rid of those annoying notifications, it noticeably cuts down load times.

I'm buying wither JC2 or JC 3 for my son for Christmas? What do you recommend? He loves sandlot games and blowing crap up. Doesn't care much for storyline but loves good/realistic graphics.

What platform? On the Xbox One, JC3 includes JC2.

Re: Just Cause 3 (12/1/2015)

Well i dont believe that JC2 would be working on the Xbox One. Shame, as thats the better one of the two to have gotten. If you were looking for Sandbox games there are lots of others to chose that are better than JC3. Shadows of Mordor is exceptional, but not running ans gunning, but fun to blow things up and see people running on fire.

Getting back to the challenges for a moment, the problem i find with them is that they are generally easy to get at least a 3 gear rating on each (and many you can get 4 or 5 on the first try), but if you don't then most of the time you don't feel invested enough to want to make further attempts. Almost every challenge i have played in this game i have done well on the first go, but even when i have come across the odd one or two that i screw up i truly cannot be bothered playing them again.

The game world is sill one of my biggest issues. JC2 had such a great gaming world with such diversity that it made it interesting just to screw around and see the sites. Here they have copy and pasted a lot of similar styles and it actually seems like that there is way, way less to see this time around. Hell after months of play on JC2 i would still come across new things.

JC2 was part of the first wave of backwards compatible titles, it says on the Xbox One case for JC3 that JC2 is included as well, and I see it on my Xbox One under 'Games & Apps' (although I haven't played it on the XB1 yet).

There was a new update to this today. I have no idea what it did. The load times are the same, so they didn't fix that.

Re: Just Cause 3 (12/1/2015)

Actually, I take that back - now my game won't load at all. It's just stuck on that title screen with Rico on the beach, not frozen (as the plumes from the explosion keep moving), but stuck, with the save icon blinking in the bottom left corner. It was stuck on there for 5 minutes before I shut it down. And I tried it twice, same thing happened both times. Think I'm gonna uninstall and play it without any updates. What utter incompetence.

The update helped the load times on PS4 tremendously. I barely have enough time to check my email during load screens now. It's thrown me way off.

Hmm... dubious. Initial boot loads are longer for me, and after death loads are about the same - though I haven't done any of the challenges since the update.
I'm gonna uninstall and reinstall and see if that help.
