Bloodborne Coming Exclusively to PS4 in 2015

Posted by Masaaki Yamagiwa on Jun 10, 2014
Producer, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio

Hello, PlayStation fans. This is Masaaki Yamagiwa from Japan Studio.

I am here to talk about a new Action RPG, Bloodborne, which will launch early 2015 exclusively for the PlayStation 4 console. Bloodborne is a new collaboration for us, being developed by FromSoftware and produced by SCE Japan Studio. This game will transport players to a dark and terror-filled gothic world, a world full of deranged beings and nightmarish creatures.

Bloodborne takes place in an ancient, forgotten city called Yharnam, known for an old medical remedy. Over the years, many hopeless and afflicted people have made long pilgrimages to Yharnam in search of help. As the main character, you are one of these travelers. However, you find that Yharnam is also cursed with a horrible endemic illness. You must navigate the perilous streets of this city, fighting off nightmarish creatures, malformed beasts and deranged mobs stricken with this horrific illness. Face your fears as you discover the secrets and mysteries of this dark and horrific world where danger, death and madness lurk around every corner.

In Bloodborne, the combat is based on intense life-threatening battles. One of the ways we are bringing that sense of danger to life is by keeping the deep strategic elements from Demon’s Souls, while also transitioning from the passive and block-and-attack style of Demon’s Souls to a quicker, more offensive and active combat style with close-range weapons and guns.

From the beautiful and melancholic architecture to the debris lining the street, Bloodborne will deliver an extremely rich and detailed world, all thanks to the power of the PlayStation 4 system. In addition, the PS4 system has allowed us to have an expanded draw distance, so we can show more of the world at any one time. New lighting effects allow us to add more atmosphere and tension to the game, making the horrifyingly detailed beasts and giant boss enemies you’ll be facing even more frightening.

I hope to be able to share more about our online features later this year, but I can say that we are developing new kinds of online experiences that allow users to share their adventures. We also look forward to giving fans new ways of playing and sharing thanks via the PS4 system’s Share capabilities.

Special message from Director Hidetaka Miyazaki:

“Creating Bloodborne as a completely new game on the new PlayStation 4 hardware has allowed us to really push the envelope in myriad ways. That being said, in more ways than one, it also very much retains our distinct, signature style. As has been at the core of our development philosophy since Demon’s Souls, we make true games for people who love games. Please watch for more to come on Bloodborne, and thank you very much for your support.”

I really liked this. Here are some more details thanks to playstationlifestyle.net.....

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/...line-elements/

Over on NeoGAF, forum mod “duckroll” posted some of details listed in Famitsu and while it’s not much, we do get some confirmation of the game’s mechanics.

- Spring 2015 release window
- They started work on this right after finishing Artorias of the Abyss, planning it for Sony’s new hardware
- The world and story is completely new, and the setting takes full advantage of the PS4′s capabilities
- The expected spec for the game is 30fps at 1080p
- The keywords for the game is “blood” and “beast”
- There will be melee and long range weapons (guns) this time
- Character customization is confirmed
- There will be no map display in the game
- He wants combat to not just focus on action but also the strategic element
- The combat in the game is designed to feel like a life or death struggle
- There will be online elements of some sort, and it will involve players “discovering” together

This looks cool, the setting actually reminded me a bit of what we've seen of The Order (i.e. some form of twisted dark London).

In light of this, I am still holding out for a Dark Souls II port to PS4...especially since this isn't due until 2015.

Re: Bloodborne - PS4 (Sony Japan + From + Miyazaki)

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2014/...loodborne-ps4/

1. This is not a sequel

FromSoftware are perhaps most famous for creating Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls II. Miyazaki himself was even the director of both Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, but he explained, “Players that have experienced the other games I have directed are going to see some familiarities, but this is not a sequel…you’re going to find something new in Bloodborne…your gameplay experience is going to be more intense…it will be heightened.”

2. Explore the unknown

Set in the fictional, sprawling city of Yharnham, the 19th century setting is dark and foreboding. FromSoftware are keeping the details of the story of Bloodborne under wraps, but Miyazaki did tell us, “One of the most important aspects we are focusing on whilst we make Bloodborne is the exploration of the unknown” – players will have a massive area of the city of Yharnham, and you’ll be encouraged to explore it to unravel “a universe laden with mystery.”

3. Something beastly this way comes

As you journey along the dingy alleyways, strange cloaked figures and deformed figures will lurch out of the darkness to attack you at almost every turn. On top of that, “there are moments, like the ominous banging of these gates in the city, where we’re telling you that some huge beast if coming.”

4. There’s something deeply wrong in Yharnham

On top of the bleak colour palette and shadows of the city, something else is amiss, “the city has been stricken by a plague, and those afflicted transform into hideous beasts” – what’s more, “the citizens around are unaware that they too are afflicted.”

5. Fight for your life

Miyazaki is known for creating games with an enjoyably challenging difficulty level, and Bloodborne will be no different, “You’re going to constantly feel terror because when you face each enemy, you will also face death. Every fight could be your last.”

6. A weapon in each hand

Bloodborne isn’t going to send you out to face the hordes unaided – players will arm themselves with a satisfyingly powerful shotgun in their left hand, as well as a scythe-like weapon in their right.

7. Passive aggressive

Whilst wading right into a crowd of enemies is clearly a strategy that will quickly have you in a body bag, trying to stay out of the fight isn’t necessarily going to work, “You’re going to have to face up to enemies quickly or else become overwhelmed.”

8. Your weapons transform as you use them

Miyazaki showed off a melee weapon that was part scythe, part saw. What was most interesting about it is that players can employ different techniques to cause the weapon to transform as you are fighting. This will be one of the key ways in which players will need to adapt their techniques to tackle bosses, and customise their characters to suit their style, “with each transformation of your weapon comes a different play style.”

9. Shifting enemies

During the level we were shown, the citizens of Yharnham were hunting the beasts that are plaguing the city. During one section, they crowded around a makeshift pyre to set alight a slain monster, allowing us to creep around the outskirts unnoticed. However this didn’t last long – soon a bell sounded from deep within the city and the rabble recommenced their hunt. Miyazaki said, “The game is going to challenge you as the environment changes and enemies move around the level in unexpected ways.”

10. Helpful fellow

As you fight through Yharnham, you’ll occasionally meet other hunters in trouble, and you can choose whether to help or not, “You have that option, if you’re compassionate… And those characters might even come back later to lend a hand and help even the odds.”

11. Up close and personal

For anyone hoping to keep enemies at (more than) arm’s length, hurting enemies whilst staying well out of their reach in order to stay alive, Bloodborne might already be one step ahead of you. Miyazaki confirmed “close range combat is going to be the focus of the game”, but also hinted at some of the tricks you’ll have up your sleeve…

For those who wanted more of the game you might get your wish later on....

Shuhei Yoshida: Bloodborne “Is an Amazing Experience;” More Exciting Things at Gamescom and TGS

Many have noticed that quite a few games were missing from Sony’s press conference two days ago, but Shuhei Yoshida mentioned during a livestreamed interview hosted by the PlayStation Blog that there’s more to come during this heated gaming summer.

Yoshida-san started by commenting on something “close to his heart:” Bloodborne.

"It’s an amazing experience. It’s beautiful, It’s big and it’s scary, and there’s a lot of blood. It’s so, so awesome.

We wanted to show a lot more, but you know how PR goes."

Yoshida-san mentioned that Sony Computer Entertainment has to space out content for the big events, and there’s still Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show coming, so we can expect to see more in August and September.

"We have a long list of things. At the beginning of the year we look at the things we are making, and that possibly we can show off at E3 or Gamescom or TGS. E3 is big and huge and important, but we want to plan out so that we have really fresh and exciting things to talk about or show at every single big opportunity. We have something for Gamescom and TGS as well."

LOL.

The OTHER Miyazaki. The one who made Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, but not Dark Souls 2.

The game reminds me too much of Devil May Cry and that is not really a good thing. Gamespot has a minute or so of gameplay footage and the conflicts were a bit awkward.

We're just seeing some developer play through the game. There was a moment when you saw the player move through the area at a slow pace. It looks like some of the enemies will be easy and some harder.

That looks pretty damn cool. Hope it's not insanely difficult like Dark Souls. I ain't got time for a mega-hardcore difficulty game.

as long as it has a setting that makes it hard I have no problem with them playing to a larger audience. There is a thread on gaf that says that it will be easier than their other games...but they better have a setting that at least matches the souls games...

Re: Bloodborne - PS4 (Sony Japan + From + Miyazaki)

The lead designer on the game is the same guy who made Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. When a naive journalist asked him at E3 if the game would include an "easy mode," he reportedly laughed at the guy in response.

I hope it's every bit as challenging and rewarding as those two games. A lot of people will be disappointed if it isn't.

I'm a little nervous about the Souls roots and frustration/difficulty, but that is a seriously cool gameplay trailer.

I don't get that mentality. Certainly I'd expect and want a Hardcore mode, but why not make the game more accessible? I feel like I'm kind of missing out on Dark Souls because I lack the skill and/or patience to gut the game out -- and that's not a good thing. I get that punishing difficulty is kind of Dark Soul's gimmick (Prepare To Die Edition). But this is a different franchise. If your game has several difficulty levels so more people can experience and enjoy them, what's the harm?

MoviePage 08-13-14 04:40 PM

Re: Bloodborne - PS4 (Sony Japan + From + Miyazaki)

Have you tried Dark Souls, though? The idea that the games are "punishingly difficult" is a misconception. That's the problem. They're no more difficult than your average NES game back in the day.

They do require patience and some trial and error, but the sense of accomplishment is worth it. That rewarding feeling is what sets the games apart, and is the very reason they're so popular.

mhg83 08-13-14 06:34 PM

Re: Bloodborne - PS4 (Sony Japan + From + Miyazaki)

Dark Souls 2 fixed some of the difficulty issues. I could never get into Demons and Dark Souls 1 due to the camera issues and the constant repeating enemies every time I died. There was also a lot of cheap enemies. DS2 let you clear areas after a certain number of times which was great going into a boss area.

I know you hardcore Souls fans have no problem repeating areas over and over but I don't have time for that shit. There's nothing wrong with having an easy difficulty. I played The Last Of Us on Normal on PS3. Now that I'm used to the game I'm playing on Hard for PS4. Maybe for Bloodborne they can make the harder difficulty more rewarding such as better loot for PVP if included or special Trophy etc. etc.

Agree with this. The trial and error aspect of the Souls titles isn't something that the average gamer nowadays has the time or patience for and I don't blame them. Hell, its the main reason that I'm not into those titles. But with the amount of money Sony is pumping into this thing I highly highly doubt that it follow suit and be inaccessible to majority of their audience. That might make it feel more hollow (pun intended) to hardcore souls players but will ensure it has higher sales.

Dark Souls and Dark Souls II aren't hard. They simply demand your full attention while you're playing, and offer little in the way of modern hand-holding.

Oh? I thought it had some sort of harsh death penalty where you lose life or something like that. Are the mobs hard? Or maybe at first until you learn patterns and weaknesses?

I've seen people argue this and I think it's bullshit. They're definitely hard by an sort of modern gaming standard.

Requires patience, caution, and experimentation. There's no magically regenerating health and no checkpoints every 5 minutes like a modern game (even Dark Souls II is sparse compared to your average game). Bosses generally require multiple attempts/approaches. No arrow pointing where to go to the next point, no map, just sometimes some random dialogue to suggest it to you. Not clear what stats affect what / what upgrades affect what. Etc, etc, etc.

Sure it's not hard by oldschool standards (easier than perhaps Contra or Ghosts and Goblins, or TMNT or Battletoads on the NES lol) but the hardest good game I can think of since the 16-bit era. Maximo on the PS2, or maybe Devil May Cry 3, MAYBE approaches the difficulty level, that's about as close as I can think of.

I've seen some people that are naturally cautious and thorough do OK (See KayPlays do her blind playthrough on Youtube for example) but most people get smacked down hard and keep getting smacked down.

It does get easier once you learn the basics, and not to just run straight in, guns a blazin' (so to speak), but the learning curve is very steep at the beginning.

That is a very dark, visually unappealing game. I'm glad that some of you like this sort of a game and I'm sure it'll be well made and excellent, but I doubt I'd even be interested in renting it personally.

And I hate the name Bloodborne which is medical term for a pathogen like a virus or bacteria spread through blood contact (like HIV or hepatitis C).
Though to be fair, it's not the worst medically-inspired video game name of recent years
