If you don't want it out so early then don't put it in retailers hands so early. I remember waiting at a game store for the midnight release of Vice City while the store manager and an employee were driving back from the airport with the boxes of copies. You leave that stuff in someone's hands for too long it is bound to get sold.

Also, who cares if people got it early? It's not a TV show where people will be playing it simultaneously. Most won't even be buying it for months.

In my case, I've had it pre-ordered since last year so I will be downloading it on release day.

If people want to watch the stream and be spoiled, that's on them. Who fucking cares? I don't see how that's any different now, before release date, than it is watching a stream after an arbitrary release date. I think it's a case of the publisher being butthurt for not having complete and utter control. They need to be happy with making a good product, and then just let it go.

Maybe it needs a massive day 1 patch?

I don't think it is as much a patch as it is being a stickler for a specific "release" date. As a matter of fact, this is the first time that I have even heard the possibility of a day one patch, much less a large one.

This game was delayed for months in order to avoid the need for any day one patches. I can't speak as to the Twitch stream restrictions but the retail restrictions make sense. All retailers are meant to have the game available on the same day (unless they work out a deal for an "exclusive" early window). This is the reason why stores like Walmart and Kmart have paid fines in the past for units of games/movies sold before release date.
Oh and I doubt it's CD Projekt Red being "butthurt for not having complete and utter control". This is a company that refuses to add DRM to their games, even though they are aware of their games being pirated. They feel restrictions only hurt the users who actually purchase their games.

Gamespot quote:
This is one of the best role-playing games ever crafted, a titan among giants and the standard-setter for all such games going forward. Where the Witcher 2 sputtered to a halt, The Witcher 3 is always in a crescendo, crafting battle scenarios that constantly one-up the last, until you reach the explosive finale and recover in the glow of the game's quiet denouement. But while the grand clashes are captivating, it is the moments between conflicts, when you drink with the local clans and bask in a trobairitz's song, that are truly inspiring.

By the way, for those that pre-ordered the game on PC, you can already download it. That way you can play it on release date without having to download it then.

The entire music score is also available to download for whomever pre-ordered the game on PC. Listening to it right now and it's great. The only track I'm not too fond of is "Eredin, King of the Hunt". Early on it borrows cues from Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score to The Dark Knight. It does become its own thing but the track is over by the time that happens.
