I intended to just do a drive-by post in the What Are You Playing thread, but Adam provided a thoughtful reply so I thought I'd memorialize it here, six years after anyone else played the game. Basically I was looking for something to play and pulled this off my shelf. I hadn't played a FPS in a while and enjoyed it. After I was able to start taking out some fortresses, I couldn't be bothered with some of the side hostage and revenge missions so I just powered through and finished the story at 75%. Afterward I went back through some of the outpost missions but kept failing on a couple, and when the game crashed and lost my progress on lost letters and stuff, I was pretty much done at 78%. Pagan Min's fortress was annoying--after getting killed several times by snipers and helicopters, I just stealthed it, and that was a lot more efficient. I kept going back and forth on which weapons to use, but the buzzsaw was nearly a cheat code and made the shotgun unnecessary.

Huge world, fun game. Good but underused villain. I just started Far Cry 5 to try to keep the vibe going, but I dislike the survivalist tone to the beginning. I'll continue, though.

Currently working on an annoying "drugged" mission, though.

I loved the animal sidekicks in 5 but otherwise didn't really find it any great shakes. Of the Far Cry games I've played, it's by far my least favorite. Unexpectedly, the New Dawn spinoff -- a crazy post-apocalyptic game where you can have actual superpowers! -- is tremendously fun. 6 is in some respects an improvement over 5, but the animal sidekicks are still the best part, and it veers really hard into gear with dumb stats that you're encouraged to constantly swap out. Oh boy! These pants give me 0.5% additional resistance against fire! Admittedly, I do remember the weapons being more interesting than the vanilla stuff in 5. The villains all suffer from that Pagan Min syndrome where they're mostly just people you occasionally see in cutscenes, only they're not nearly as charismatic or memorable.

Far Cry 4 is still my favorite, although I admittedly haven't played 3, which I know is a fan favorite. If you don't mind a recommendation, check out Just Cause 3, which captures a lot of what I dug about FC4; just a big, chaotic sandbox to go nuts in. It's got its weak spots for sure (the map is huge and mostly barren; lotsa repetition), but you get another wingsuit, there's a huge emphasis on experimenting with physics and your tethers (so you can generate a slingshot to fling cows miles across the map), and generally just a passion for making things explode, and causing those exploding things to make other things explode.

Exploding stuff is good, I admit I picked Sabal’s opium-fields mission because I could burn them instead of saving them.

I played one of the Just Cause games (2?), but it felt a little buggy, maybe because it was 360 backwards compatible. I decided I don’t game enough to play BC games that I don’t have any attachment to when there’s newer stuff available so I dropped it. I believe I do own #3, though, and it’s one of the ones in the pile I consider when picking something new. It was probably a toss-up between that and FC4 actually.

Primal, 5 & 6 are the best Far Cry games easily. I know a lot of people will say 3 but I don't feel the same. It has Vaas and he's one of the best villains ever - I'm definitely not disputing that.

4 was decent - but was then followed by the amazing Primal which I HIGHLY recommend you play.

Thanks to this bump, I dusted off my copy and started playing again .

Although 3 had a better story, 4 refined the gameplay which is the main reason I play FC games.

Surprise at how much map I've yet to uncover. For such an old title the size of the world is impressive.

I only played 5 and loved it. Played a little of 3, I believe. Couldn’t get into 6.

After the disturbing opening sequence of Far Cry 5, I’m now in familiar territory of roaming the open world, so I’m back on track.

As an outside observer of the franchise ever since picking up the FC4 XBone disc, I tend to forget about Primal, but I’ll probably check it out someday.

Just to chime in as a dissenting voice : Primal is maybe my least favorite post-FC2. The story is dumb, it’s very very short with little to do after you finish the main story. It’s far less fun to play FC without guns, and once you become a beastmaster, it’s absurdly easy to take over every outpost without ever even stepping foot in one.

I keep thinking of possible places for Far Cry 7 and keep coming back to Australia. Would make a great unique location with variety of wildlife to hunt and survive in.

Yeah, did NOT like Primal either - it's just a weak re-skin of the far superior FC4.

Re: Far Cry 4 -- November 18, 2014 - PC, PS3, 360, PS4, Xbox One

Finished earlier this evening. This is by far my favorite FC game. Finished 3 that had the best story. 4's story was okay but it was the gameplay loop that hooked me it was basically perfected version of 3. I only dabled in 5 and 6 that didn't hold my attention. Poured over 50 hpurs into this one. A huge problem I had with 5 was everything and everyone was out to kill you where in 4 you at least had good NPC'S that wouldn't attack you and can take a breather.

Once I unlocked the best sniper Rifles the game become a breeze in stealth as I was able to clear every outpost and fortress with no alerts. I felt like a Ninja Rambo

I sided with Amita and killed Min. Felt like she would've made Kyrat a better place.

Still have Yeti DLC and Primal to play. Looking forward to those

Tried to play Primal 3 or 4 times and given up every time. Loved all the Far Cry games except that one. Hated it. Just couldn't get into it.

I love hunting with bow and arrow in these games so Primal might be right up my alley

For whatever reason, I’ve always used the guns in FC games, even though the bows are stealthier and more beneficial for hunting, especially during the early stages when trying to accumulate resources. But I often use bows in non-gun games when they’re the only distanced weapons. I did start using one in FC5 when I noticed one did mega damage.
