Assassin's Creed V (Unity? 18th-Century Paris) -- Fall 2014; Two Games Possible

One of this fall's big Assassin's Creed games, called or code-named Unity, is set at least partly in 18th-century Paris, according to early leaked screenshots obtained by Kotaku.
These screenshots, sent to me by a source who requested anonymity, show Unity's new assassin roaming around what appears to be Paris. You can see Notre Dame, the Seine River, and other Parisian landmarks, and the shots are very clearly from an early version of the game.
What's more, this is just one of two major Assassin's Creed games that will be out later this year, according to a number of sources. Unity will be for the current-gen consoles—Xbox One and PS4—while a second game, possibly called or code-named Comet, will be released on Xbox 360 and PS3. Presumably one or both versions will also be on PC. Sorry, Nintendo fans: I haven't yet heard anything about Wii U.
This information comes both from web chatter and our own conversations with developer sources. For months now we've heard rumors and rumblings about what could be the next installment in Ubisoft's popular assassin-parkour series, which has been released on an annual schedule for five years now. There's been a new major Assassin's Creed every fall since 2009.
Interesting as all this is, the prospect of two major AC games this fall is particularly noteworthy. Some might be excited that Ubisoft is liberating their teams from the shackles of cross-gen development for Unity, which won't have to make any compromises to fit into last-gen hardware. But some critics have already accused Ubisoft of milking the Assassin's Creed franchise—in the past five months alone we've seen Black Flag, the mobile game Pirates, the HD remakes of Liberation, and an Assassin's Creed board game called Arena. Two new games this fall could add to Assassin's Creed's reputation as an overused series.

Well, Black Flag revitalized the series after the atrocious III for me. So I'm down with this if true.

Even though it seems like the the odd-numbered ones in the series are duds so far and the even-numbered ones good, I am SO on-board with this setting that I'll be getting it day-one.

Finally got around to playing Black Flag after having it for months. Blows away III (never even finished it, bored me). Hopefully the odd number curse doesn't continue (I never did play the first two games).

I still have 3 and 4 to play through first. I'll sit this one out for now. But splitting last gen with current gen was a smart move. No sense in holding a game back with limitations if it's not going to run great on those consoles (see Watch Dogs). And at least people with those systems will still have something new to play.

4 has been great. I'm in for this, presuming it doesn't get terrible reviews (but then 1 and 3 got good reviews and I didn't enjoy them, so...yeah).

The first, I liked, but it is no where near as good as 2 and IV.

I think half the appeal of Black Flag was the radically unique setting, which also offered some new gameplay opportunities. 18th century Paris seems like it could be in danger of reverting to something a bit too similar to ACII-III (what was that, like five games?). I'd really like another unique setting, personally, rather than a return to Europe. Plus, can they change up the character design, please!? The assassin garb is really kind of lame at this point, it has barely changed since the first game, except to become more ornate and improbable. Also, get rid of Desmond/Animus bullshit and just make a historical fiction game.

Loved Black Flag, wasn't even going to play it after III left a very bad taste in my mouth but couldn't resist. Now I'll probably blind buy this one. Please don't let me down.

Confirmed by Ubisoft. This seems like something put out in direct response to the leak.

Also confirms, based on the logos at the very end, that Unity will probably be exclusive to PS4 and Xbox One for the console market.

I was never a big fan of the series, but for some reason Black Flag totally changed my mind on it.

... then move straight to Black Flag.
I don't dislike the first one, though, and I think it's worth plowing through it at such a low price now. But yeah, it's not necessary to enjoy the Ezio trilogy and definitely inferior to all of the above.

I've always wanted to get into this series but I've never been able to. The concept and settings for the games usually sounds appealing to me but when I play them I just find them repetitive and get bored with them.

Like all the rest of the AC games, I am in but I won't get pumped up about it like I did with AC III what a disappointment.

I'm also in the camp of getting rid of the Animus aspect of the games. To me, those scenes are pointless.

I could see myself sitting this one out. As much as I liked most aspects of AC4, I still got bored and never finished it. With the exception of the naval stuff, it was really more if the same, and I just don't know that I want to do that again.

Because Watch Dogs is being made for every platform, including last gen 360/PS3. This AC:Unity is just for new gen PS4/X1.
