Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
I don't have a link handy, but that chart has been proven many times to be bullshit. That is, to someone who isn't legally blind. I know from personal experience that chart is WAY off. But then again, I can see.

Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
Well, if you google for HDTV seating distance, you will find many similar charts. They're all slightly different. The main point is that distance matters just as much as size. People that say they see no difference in the "p's" are most likely just sitting too far away.
|
Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
Duh, of course distance matters. That's pretty obvious. The argument is the distance in that chart is completely bogus. You don't need to sit anywhere near that close to see a difference, unless like I said, you are legally blind.

But I play on a 106" screen. That isn't the norm. I am a mega nerd. |

I actually just played the new Wolfenstein on it and had to stop. The First Person Perspective and movement made me almost Puke. It's weird cause I had no problem with Bioshock Infinite. |
Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
Yeah, shooters are hit or miss for me. I'm good with Halo & Bioshock but Borderlands gives me headaches. The Gears of War head bob is obnoxious blown up that big.

Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
I bought both systems for exclusives, but if there is a better version that's not a first person shooter, I'll probably go with the PS4 version. I'm on the fence about which system to get Destiny, but I went ahead and got Wolfenstein for Xbox One since from what I've read it's identical in resolution/fps and I prefer the controller to the DS4 (even though it's the best PS controller yet), cheap with rewards, and single player.
Those Digital Foundry videos are pretty helpful. Having a 50 inch TV, I can still tell a difference between 720 and 1080p, but upscaled I'm not too sure. |
Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
Resolution isn't the problem for XB1, but it's a symptom of the problem. The problem is that it has outdated RAM and a weak GPU. Some here will probably call that a "bash", but it's a pretty simple and truthful statement IMO.
If it's running last gen games like AC4 and Tomb Raider and smaller games like Plants vs. Zombies and Trials in 720p-900p, what do you suppose its performance, not just with resolution, but across the board will look like in 5 years compared to PS4 and PC on games that are much more demanding and that use the GPU for compute? Decker and others talked about it being a factor in choosing which version of a game to buy, but to me, it's more of a factor in choosing which console to invest in for the long term. Also, between two boxes with relatively few differences (less every day), it's "a difference". |
Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
I truly wonder if these systems are going to last as long as last gen. Both companies say they should last a while, but I have to wonder if it's just marketing nonsense. People are already calling these systems mid-range compared to PC. I guess we'll see.

BTW, I agree that the PS4 is more powerful than the X1. But I think both consoles should be able to output 1080p without issue. They have medium level graphics cards, at least, all the PC cards at that level can output 1080p without issue. The issue is when you want 60 FPS. So, in the long term, resolution won't be an issue. But the PS4 games, the ones from Sony studios, should look better, if they can use all the power. So in 4-5 years. That's also what happened with the PS2 and PS3, even when they weren't the most powerful console. |

The issue is when you want 60 FPS. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7528/t...are-analysis/2 In order to accommodate the eSRAM on die Microsoft not only had to move to a 12 CU GPU configuration, but it’s also only down to 16 ROPs (half of that of the PS4). The ROPs (render outputs/raster operations pipes) are responsible for final pixel output, and at the resolutions these consoles are targeting having 16 ROPs definitely puts the Xbox One as the odd man out in comparison to PC GPUs. Typically AMD’s GPU targeting 1080p come with 32 ROPs, which is where the PS4 is, but the Xbox One ships with half that. The difference in raw shader performance (12 CUs vs 18 CUs) can definitely creep up in games that run more complex lighting routines and other long shader programs on each pixel, but all of the more recent reports of resolution differences between Xbox One and PS4 games at launch are likely the result of being ROP bound on the One. This is probably why Microsoft claimed it saw a bigger increase in realized performance from increasing the GPU clock from 800MHz to 853MHz vs. adding two extra CUs. The ROPs operate at GPU clock, so an increase in GPU clock in a ROP bound scenario would increase performance more than adding more compute hardware. |
Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
The only x-gen games that I'd consider next-gen are Rivals and Assassin's Creed IV. Wolfenstein, on PC, is very much a last gen game -- it runs spectacularly, but it isn't much to look at - same goes for the One and PS4 counterparts.

Actually, if it was 1080p, then the CVUs and GPTs won't have enough CMU bits to combobulate the full Shading Master's intent. |

I don't think programming optimizations will out last progressing hardware either for those that want to pimp twitter anecdotes, although the delay in Nvidia and AMD moving to a smaller manufacturing process for their next graphics chips might help delay that for another year. |

I'd actually expect it to be pretty common in the middle of this generation to see the trend continue with games running at 720P or 900P because the GPU in both aren't exactly cutting edge. The PS4 is better, but not exactly fantastic either for us PC tech spec people.

That XBox-83 can run a mean Tetris.

That's bullshit, the Ti-83 was way easier to program for.

Re: Resolution Wars (1080 vs 720) : Does It Matter?
Yeah, if you use TI-BASIC. But real programmers used the Z80 assembly language to unlock the full potential of that Zilog Z80 6 MHz CPU, yo.
