Question for sports fans
I was wondering about this while playing MLB The Show a few hours ago
I am really enjoying it, but I am not a big enough Baseball fan to buy a new game every year. Would you prefer a whole new game every year, or just updates throughout the year where you do not pay as much. Granted, I do not know how possible it is with players retireing in what might be mid season in your league, but if it were possible, would you like that better?
The same can really be applied to any sport game, so please do not limit your answer to just baseball.
Personally, I would rather just pay a little bit a few times for updates, but that is just me

The next version of the Show will be on PS4, and that's reason enough to buy it. That and it'll be the only baseball game. Hell, I might even buy a PS4 just for that game.

Re: Question for sports fans
Before I had my PS3, I was a PC gamer. And the games I spent most of my time with were baseball games. I played 'em all. Hardball, Triple Play, VR Baseball, Microsoft Baseball, High Heat, MVP. I didn't mind buying the games every year as they were relatively cheap, and the technology was moving fast enough that each game provided a significant upgrade.
Then the games slowly died off, and all we were left with was MVP. Then 2K went and killed that by buying the exclusive rights for baseball. Us in the PC world were now stuck with MVP '05. And we did our best to keep it up to date. Hell, there's still a dedicated community out there that mods the game. 2K put out a few PC versions, but now they're gone too.
So I bought a PS3, and moved onto The Show. I bought 10, skipped 11, and bought 12 and 13. Upgrades are a much harder pill to swallow when you're paying $60 as opposed to $20 or $30. (I did wait til 12 was cheap before I picked it up). And the real sad part is that since you can't really mod console games, I spend far less time playing The Show. I'm gonna buy '14 for the PS4, as even the small previews have looked amazing, but who knows after that.
I run into the same issues with the WWE games. I buy the damn games every year, and every year they have the same freaking bugs and running on an engine that was made in the PS2 era. This is a franchise that NEEDS to take a year off just to put out a modern game. Hopefully WWE 2K15 will put it back on the right path, but I'm not confident with that.
The basic question is this: do you care about online play? If you do, you're kinda stuck with buying the game every year. If you just want to play offline, you can get away with skipping.

I always wondered why some of the sports game makers didn't go with the cheaper yearly update route, but I imagine they make waaay too much selling full priced games year in and year out. No point for EA to sell you an update for $20 when they can sell millions of copies of Madden for $60 every year.

When I was a kid I waited for the yearly edition of Micro League Baseball and that passion carried all the way to The Show... but as I get older, I just don't have time to get thru a whole season anymore so an update to the rosters would be more than fine with me.

I remember tons of hours poured into that game on my Atari ST. I still have a print-out of a perfect game 'I threw' with JR Richards of the 1990 Houston Astros iirc.

I only buy sports titles every few years, so if the publishers had the option to also do yearly updates at a lower cost, they might get more of my money.

But for the mobile devices sometimes they just update the jerseys and sell the game as new.

I'd want maybe a 2-year cycle, which would allow them to improve the engine and add features from time to time but wouldn't be yet another game every year.

Ah, no thanks if that is the case.
I like getting a new release every year. Not just for the gameplay improvements (however slight they may be), but for instance in Fifa my online Pro is pretty much maxed out by the end of the year so I like starting over and building my guy up from scratch again.

Mmmmmmm...APBA.
Still have two seasons of cards down in the basement somewhere and it's looking more and more like there's going to be some kind of weather delay tomorrow. Let's play two!

Re: Question for sports fans
Not to derail this thread but I have a baseball/video game question. Is there a baseball game on the 360 that will allow you to create a roster from scratch? I've always wanted to play a season as the '86 Mets. Any game allow that sort of thing? Or is there a game where that team is unlockable? Thanks!
