Playstation Now - Streaming Service Announced.

Not a lot of details yet, but Sony just announced a long-rumored streaming service to start later this year:
from IGN

Sony Reveals its Streaming Service: PlayStation Now
Experience PlayStation games on all sorts of devices.
by Colin Moriarty
January 7, 2014

Today at CES, Sony revealed PlayStation Now, an all-new games streaming service that will allow PlayStation games to be played across various PlayStation hardware and directly on other non-gaming platforms.

The idea is simple: you will no longer need to keep a PSone, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3 around to experience games from those consoles. PlayStation Now will allow streaming of classics from those systems to not only PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, but to televisions, tablets, and smartphones.

For launch, the games available will be limited, but Sony's Andrew House did confirm that Naughty Dog's The Last of Us will be among the titles available to play without a PlayStation 3.

We're awaiting further details about PlayStation Now, but in the meantime, expect a closed beta for the service to begin later this month, with full service rolling out to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and other electronic devices this summer.

So the next big question is how much?

Just a guess $13 a month

And the question after that is "existing disk validation".

Can I put a PS3 disk into my PS4 to validate ownership and play it via Now?

We know the PS4 is technically capable of validation, because it currently validates ownership of PS3 versions of AC4, BF4 and CoD Ghosts.

Nice! Although I'm not sure how well streaming PS games to a tablet or phone would work. Wish they would just let you do it to a PC.

Here's the official presser.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 U.S. models of Sony's BRAVIAŽ TV*2 lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing users to stream PlayStation games on numerous other Internet-connected devices.

SCE's vision for PS Now is to enable users to instantly enjoy a wide range of full games on the Internet-connected consumer electronics devices they use every day. The accessibility of PS Now means, for example, that PS4 users in the living room can continue playing a game on a PS3 system in their bedroom. Or PS Vita users can enjoy instant access to a game wherever there's Wi-Fi connectivity, such as outdoors, then can switch to a supporting BRAVIAŽ TV's big screen and play the same game after arriving home.

PS Now will offer choice to gamers with how they want to access content. Gamers can rent by title for specific games they are interested in, or they can choose a subscription that delivers additional value with the ability to explore and play many games available across a wide variety of genres. In addition, the service will support many popular PSNSM features such as online multi-player, Trophies, and messages.

"We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "PS Now will allow users to engage in the world of PlayStation, whether they're existing fans or have never owned a PlayStation platform."

During the 2014 International CES held in Las Vegas from January 7, attendees can visit the Sony booth to have a hands-on experience with the PS Now service for the first time ever. Attendees can enjoy four blockbuster PS3 titles, BEYOND: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and Puppeteer from SCE Worldwide Studios, on PS Vita or BRAVIAŽ TV.

Prior to the official launch, SCE will begin a beta program on PS3 systems in certain regions of the United States from the end of January. Additional information about PS Now will be available at http://us.playstation.com/playstationnow.

hope it can take existing disc-based PS+ Cloud game saves and continue from there.

Yeah, this is something I'd consider getting a PS4 for. The tablet/smartphone integration is awesome.

I assume if you're streaming to a TV, you need a Smart TV to do this, right? I don't see how a regular old HDTV could do it. Also, wouldn't you need a console hooked up to the TV anyway? The TV alone can't read a wireless signal from a controller.

It would be funny for those that own a 360 though. They can finally play Playstation exclusives with the superior controller. :)

you'd need a console at home to play on a tv. for smartphone/tablet, i assume you just stream directly from their servers.

More details including hands on: http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/7/528...n-now-hands-on

Looks like only to Bravia TVs right now, there's a slight noticeable lag and the graphics obviously aren't as good as the console counterparts.

Wait, so do Bravia TVs have the capability of using Bluetooth to connect to controllers or something?

What about games that require SixAxis motion control? They couldn't be played with anything but a PS3 controller or could they?

No streaming Lair = No Sale.

I'm pretty excited about this. I missed God of War Assention and Beyond. I would play on PS4 and Vita. I'm just concerned about bandwidth. remote Play can be dicey when my wife is watching Netflix.

I was thinking more of using a 360 controller. I don't like the positioning of the left analog stick on PS controllers.

I was thinking more of Uncharted. Maybe I don't remember right, but the first Uncharted I believe used SixAxis for balancing on logs and throwing grenades and such.

Glad they dropped the dumb Gaikai name for the service.

Is the plan for ALL PS2 games to be playable eventually or just those deemed "classics" by Sony?
There are some PS2 niche titles I would love to be able to play on my PS4 or Vita instead of having to break out my old PS2.

There'll be so many older games that won't be available because rights have expired, companies have gone under, etc.

I'll wait for the titles that are streaming before I get excited.

Re: Playstation Now - Streaming Service Announced.

Sounds exciting. I'm sure most of the games from Sony owned studios or PS exclusives would be available first. Rights to most of the 3rd party games would have to be obtained in order to be streamed I would assume.

Pretty cool, interested to hear how things shake out as this becomes more real, ie pricing, titles, etc.

Doubt it. HD remakes of previous games are a nice moneymaker for publishers.
