Advance Wars 1-2: Reboot Camp. $59.99. (4/21/2023, Nintendo Switch)

I never played 2. I put over one THOUSAND hours into one. My most played game ever. On a GBA with Gameshark unlimited HP/fuel/ammo/movement, etc. I was worried how I was going to play without cheats. I have about an hour in and I can beat the first three level after looking at videos on how to win. If you do the same move the results are the same. Going to play those three another hour or so until I get bored then go on to other levels. There's about 64 missions total in the whole game. I love doing the same mission over and over and over again. The feel is the same as the GBA. I don't mind the graphics. Other people hate them.

Cleaned up your YouTube video code for you. You’re welcome. 😉

… and I loved the GBA game and still have it (somewhere). I’ll eventually get this game but I have such a backlog right now, I’d never get around to playing it.

But you’re right, it’s addicting.

Thanks! I went back to edit it but it wouldn't show up in the edit window for me to fix.

A starred the fourth mission, have to go back and s star it. This was an easy day 1 purchase for me.

3 hours in and loving it. Feels just like the original. I never played the sequel, looking forward to it.

9.5 hours in. There's a challenge mode that is unlocked for each game, so the first game has 25*2 campaigns and the second has 34*2 campaings. This happens whether you play it on Casual or Normal. Then there is a War Room with 30 maps and another 107 maps where you can play 1-3 CPUs (or friends). That's a ton of content.

Why does no one buy the games I buy Two, TWO games recently and apparently I'm the only one who bought those.

I bought it. Finished the first mission, and it’s starting to come back to me. What specifically is the difference in difficulty between casual and the other mode?

Extra unit(s), mission specific. I'm doing mine on casual. I do my own cheats on this game I look at walkthroughs and do the same and the cpu always reacts the same to the same action.

On the GBA I had a Gameshark and I had unlimited movement, ammo, fuel, funds, health. I went into each map and killed everything. Over and over and over again. Good times. I almost want to buy a GBA and the game and the gameshark again.

Damn. Yeah those exploits were good times. II remember borrowing a friend’s GameShark to get Mew and stuff like that in Pokémon. There was also the in-game Missingno exploit.

I worked at a call center and at the time 20 years ago (not nowadays) they allowed us to play video games so when I got a mad customer I'd let them yell it out while I button mashed and when they got it all out of their system I'd put the game down and help them. That's how I got 1000 plus hours in the game.

Nice, I need to pick this up, too. I just sold the GBA originals (and the DS games) and wouldn't mind playing again. I wish this series would pick back up again.

Glad you're loving it Deb. I put countless hours in to the OG ones for the GBA and DS. Glad they are bringing the series back. Hopefully it will garner enough interest to spin off more of the series. Have there ever been any releases in Japan that we didn't get over here?

But you've never played this game straight without any cheats? Do you always follow a walkthrough and just input the moves that it tells you to? Doesn't sound like much fun to play that way.

Oh I play it straight too and I lose I also play some of the playthrough then do the rest on my own, mixing it up. For some reason I get such an enjoyment of going into a map in God mode and blowing up the enemy.

I used walkthroughs so many times. I think the DS games started adding some randomness, which really messed that up - I hated that!

It's so much better gameplay-wise, though, if you can't just game the cpu that easily.

Unless the cpu just cheats.

It certainly is better - I just never got very good at fast attacks in the game, which seem to be required on some levels. I was much better at playing defensively and slowly working up a unit advantage. I know that's really a "me" problem.

I loved these games back in the day... is the only way to play this on the Switch? Is there anything similar on Android or for Steam?

There was a Kickstarter a while back for one that looked exactly like Advance Wars, but it's not out yet:

Warside

There are a bunch of Advance Wars clones/predecessors.

Tiny Metal is almost a clone
Fire Emblem has made a comeback
Wargroove
Nectaris/Military Madness
Kaiju Wars
Banner Saga

And the maps are smaller but I highly recommend
Into the Breach

If you like Xcom, then either of the Mario/Rabbids games.

Warside is a direct ripoff.... how can they get away with that?

(Yes I'm buying day one for AW PC).

I gotta say, playing this while sick is no fun. I don’t feel like making all these tactical decisions when out of commission.

Nectaris is the only PS1 game I still have a physical copy of. I played that game to death.
