Thanks to $50 in Amazon gift cards I received from one of my aunts, I ordered the GD08 case. :D

Here's a nice review of it for anyone interested:

That's an awesome HTPC case. Almost bought one but really wanted a massive media server/gaming PC instead so I went with the Corsair 900d.

Castlevania: Lord of Shadows 2 is now up for Pre-order on Steam, GamersGate and Greenman Gaming. There is also a demo available on the Steam site.

If you're like Cyan and still haven't grown out of the past, another re-release of Myst is available in honor of its 20th anniversary entitled realMyst Masterpiece Edition. This is a remake of 2000s RealMyst, but unlike that one it allows you to play the original point and click edition using updated still visuals. This uses the Unity engine. $17.99, 33% off if you own the original realMYST.

And it's been discussed elsewhere but Titanfall's system requirements are surprisingly light.

OS: 64-bit Windows 7, 8, 8.1
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 2.8GHz or Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
Memory: 4GB RAM
GPU: 512MB VRAM, Radeon HD 4770 or GeForce 8800GT

Probably won't be popular enough here to warrant its own thread, but Banished was released yesterday. It's a city building/town management/resource collection game developed by one guy (he did everything, even the engine), and it is very impressive. I played it all night last night and couldn't stop.

It's very similar to the Anno series of games, but much smaller scale. You just start out with a barn and some families, with a stockpile of resources, and you have the build all the housing/civic/production structures to keep the town alive. Seasons change, disasters strike. People are born and they die.

Very old school, but well done interface as well, with lots of info panes you can move around the screen.

Check it out, definitely worth the $20, even if it isn't as feature rich as the Anno games.

Ikaruga is now available on Steam ($9.99). Some of the lowest system requirements (obviously enough) I've seen on a game in some time:

Minimum:
OS: Windows 8 / 7 / Vista / XP
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo (Athron64 X2)
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: DirectX 9.0c support (256 MB VRAM)
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Hard Drive: 512 MB available space
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c support

My Samsung Electronics MZ-7PD128BW 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 128GB SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive arrived to day. Next I gotta get the Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE1T0BW. And then debate between this HDD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER) and this HDD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER). I think I might go for the cheaper one since I assume the faster RPM's will matter little if all I'll be using the HDD is to store my music and the ocassional video.

Despite the bugs, Alpha Protocol is a whole lot of fun. I know Sega owns the rights and refuses to make a sequel but I hope that a spiritual successor (sans bugs) is made some day.

1TB SSD just seems like a waste of money to me now. Don't get me wrong, you'll get load time increases on your games, but man it's just so much money.

Of course, I'm making due with a 128gb ssd (Windows, Adobe Master Collection and main apps) and installing games on my secondary hdd (which runs extremely well.)

If I had to do it over I think the 256gb SSDs are the sweet spot. I downloaded SteamMover and it works great for moving Steam games to my other larger HDs when I'm not playing those games.

Is this in regards to the 1TB SSD or the 4TB HDD? I could definitely wait for a deal on either. I'm just thinking in terms of what I want the finished build to have. Which is why I'm willing to take my sweet ass time to make this just right.

Nothing wrong with a 1TB SSD. I like the idea of never having to uninstall anything. Got used to that with large platter drives. I'm also one of those people who likes to dabble in a lot of games at the same time; I don't often get a game and plow through it without playing anything else.

I was looking at newegg's prices a couple days ago and the 750GB was slightly less expensive ($0.53/GB compared to $0.55/GB for the 1TB.) The prices change all the time though, so it's probably the other way around now.

Not sure, some sort of game assets I suppose. That's probably the biggest PC game i've seen, Call of Duty Ghosts was about 41 GB.

my internet connection is going to be a problem this generation with the size of the downloads. my DSL is only 4 mbps DL. :( That is the best I can get out here in rural NC. So we are talking a couple of days to download a game in the future. I think the largest game I have downloaded so far is World of Warcraft which was right at 25 gigs I believe.

Re: PC Gaming Thread

It's funny, I currently work with a developer that gave me some insight about the Sim City issues; despite what some people have said about offline, it's not really total BS to rework the game to work without an internet connection.

Meanwhile, Microsoft says they have a renewed focus on Windows and PC Gaming.

http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/21/553...g-phil-spencer

"A renewed focus on Windows and PC gaming inside Microsoft is definitely happening," he continued. "You will see more focus from us — not to go compete with what Valve has done, but because we also understand as the platform holder it's important for us to invest in the platform in a real way. We're fundamentally committed to that."

Spencer said we'll hear more about the company's Windows PC gaming plans this summer, as "more talks and different technology" are shown.

"You will get a clear answer from us very soon," Spencer said about the future of Games for Windows Live. "We have a longer term plan for multiplayer gaming and marketplace on Windows. We understand what we have today in market ... isn't great. We do understand there's some continuity of getting from where we are to where we want to be [and] that shutting the lights off [on Games for Windows Live] isn't exactly the right thing to do.

"We've got to make sure we've got a thoughtful plan that supports the people that currently have games on Games for Windows Live. It's a conversation we're having."

Spencer warned there "might be some transition bumps, getting from here to there," as Microsoft redefines its PC gaming efforts.

"But we're going to invest significantly more in that space, not less," he said. "It's just whether what we have today is the core of what we have [in the future] and it's probably not.

"We've got to have this message out in a thoughtful way [within the next few] months and not anything more than that. It's in the real near term. This is something that we're working on now... because we want to be clear on it."
With the DX12 announcement, sounds good to me.

RichC2 03-22-14 08:07 AM

Re: PC Gaming Thread

Yeah, this is sort of what I anticipated with this gen coming around. With Microsoft losing ground in the OS field, game consoles becoming glorified HTPCs with the same architecture (and in some cases the same Direct X), and PC hardware getting dirt cheap (you can get a graphic card that provides damn near similar performance to both consoles for $100 right now.) it's only logical that some focus would shift back this way.

A big part of it being that multi-console games will by and large be developed for High End PCs and ported over.

The reason I call the Sim City patch BS is because it was cracked and largely functional offline within a few weeks of release last year.

With the DX12 announcement, sounds good to me.

Microsoft says this every 3-4 years and usually they just demonstrate that they don't understand the pc gaming market.

I would say that the first move in showing a renewed interest in pc gaming would not be to leave your existing games and service out to die. People have been entirely confused on the shutting down of GFWL, there is no consistent message, and everything is left to publishers on a case by case basis. For the most part this means that gamers are left with their account based games abandoned, still unsure what parts will be functional if any. I don't see why I would suddenly jump ship to their new platform given how poorly they handled the old one.

When you combine this with they way they handled pc gaming in the past, charging for online when nobody else did, using a drm scheme that was often a barrier to play your games, connecting, installing, saving games, etc, not releasing some of their larges published games on Windows, I don't see why I would suddenly embrace their new platform.

My guess is that their new renenwed focus is an attempt to push Windows 8.1 or their pc app store or some other broader agenda, so rather than open things up and really sell gamers on the price which is how Steam and other stores won gamers over, they will put games behind some barrier to try and force some ulterior upgrade, service, product, etc.

EDIT: Just read the article, and they mention more to come about shutting down GFWL. It's been since August 2013 and they still don't have something more to say about that if they are going to change direction? It's pointless to announce that they are going to announce something in the future.

Nausicaa 03-25-14 08:39 AM

Re: PC Gaming Thread

GFWL sucked. If MS wants to help PC gaming, all they need to do is get out of the way.

Another example of MS just being way behind the curve, and playing catch up with what will probably be various gaming services of dubious quality and value.

RichC2 03-25-14 09:07 AM

Re: PC Gaming Thread

Microsoft always gets in the way, they try to find new sources of revenue and each time it's inferior to what's already available. The entire reason for Metro on Desktops was to push their terrible App Store, which is fine for phones and tablets but had no business on desktops or laptops.

Otherwise 8.1 would have been Boot-to-Desktop by default with "Show Apps View Automatically when clicking Start" enabled

You can't do that if you're trying to sell yourself as the more open infrastructure.

Definitely not enough RAM to play a lot of upcoming games at high settings.

taffer - that $700 build seems like more of a true system crusher to me, just based on specs, but if I were going to build a PC I'd probably go close to $1000 to make it last a bit longer - more RAM, an SSD drive, and a more powerful graphics card.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. I've seen a recent video on Revision3 about building a PC, and the guy on there talked about having 32gb of RAM. Does that guy really need that much RAM for gaming? I wouldn't think so.
