If we get him a headset, will be able to only talk to people on his friend list or would it be opened up more than that?

I don't play (obviously), so any other pointers/recommendations are appreciated. The console also auto-signs in with my account. I assume I should set him up with a child account, and have that auto-sign in? Do I then do XBox Live for that account, or do I keep it under my account?
You'll want to set up a new account for him, then tie it to your main account and user parental controls on it. Keep Live Gold on your main account; as long as he logs into your home console, he'll have Gold access as well.

Here's a guide on how to set up the parental controls with a new account for him. You can set it so that he can only voice/chat with people on his friends list.

You should probably also disable the auto-sign in of your account, so he doesn't bypass the restrictions, either accidentally or on purpose. If others in the house use the XB1, you may want to set them up with their own accounts too.

If there are achievements, etc associated with my account, will I be able to transfer them over to him? He's been playing a lot of Madden and Battlefront. I'd feel bad if he loses progress or anything on those.

No, you can't transfer achievements across accounts. If he still likes playing those games, he could probably re-earn them pretty quick.

Also, good to start him on his own account now, so when he grows up and moves out he can take his account with him.

That sucks. I have no need for any of it. Ideally I'd turn the entire gamer tag over to him, but with parental controls.

That might be doable, but more complex.

First, did you buy any digital download games on your account? Because if you give him the account, the games will go with it.

It doesn't appear that he plays at all, so it shouldn't be an issue...

I'm fine with that. I've bought Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, but that's it.

Could I simply change the email address associated with my current account/gamertag to his, then create a new account on the XBox for me and use that account to enable parental controls for the original account?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Also, once the Gold trial ends, subscribe to Gold using your new account. And remove any billing info from your old account.

Xbox Game Pass: Unlimited Access to More Than 100 Games - $9.99/month

Today, we’re continuing our commitment to give you more options to diversify and expand your library of games with Xbox Game Pass, a new gaming subscription service coming later this spring. Xbox Game Pass gives you unlimited access to over 100 Xbox One and backward compatible Xbox 360 games – all for $9.99 per month.
Interesting. It follows in the spirit of EA Access, but... more expensive... but with more titles. I wonder how many are previous "Games with Gold" titles.

I'm not sure I'd sign up, personally. I guess it depends on how many games I truly intend to play are actually on there; there's no list yet, just a mention of a few titles like Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16 and SoulCalibur II.

That's kind of interesting, might be one of those things where it's worth it to sign up for a month or two just to knock out some games you haven't played.

Especially if you wanted to run through some quick games with easy achievements.

You can see a couple more games now. Halo 5, Saints Row 4, Mad Max, NBA2K16, LEGO Batman, Mega Man Legacy, Terraria, Pay Day 2, GoW Remaster, Fable 3, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and that's as far as I can make out.

re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

Despite the lack of new and original games making it to the Xbox platform, I think Microsoft is doing a pretty darn good job making the rest of their "ecosystem" enticing for owners. I think things like this, EA Access, and Backwards Compatibility are pretty damn nice ways to play and keeping players engaged.

I wonder if Sony is going to bother doing anything, or just keep pushing Playstation Now.

Well, if anything, I would say MS is pretty much copying PS Now. The only difference is, this will include games from this gen whereas PS now is lacking PS4 games (as of now). But I could easily see that changing after this announcement. If they include some PS4 exclusives and modify their pricing structure, they would be right there with them.

But as far as backwards compatibility, I don't think that's ever going to happen. But I do have to say that cross-buy has been an excellent feature for PS4/PS3/Vita owners.

I thought the pricing sucked, but the actual gameplay of PS Now was just fine. I'd rather stream tons of games than have to download them all individually onto my finite hard drive.

For me, the input lag and image quality degradation even with in home streaming has been mediocre enough that I would never rely on streaming a game over the internet.

Obviously everyone's experience will differ based on internet speeds, your network at home, and how susceptible the individual is to things like input lag and image quality. I'm sure PS Now is fine depending on the person and the type of game.

But I'd take downloading games without question over streaming them, given the choice. Worrying about hard drive size limitations doesn't even enter my mind anymore after buying an external drive for my Xbox One.

Yeah, I prefer streaming as well, but this is still better than nothing. Plus it'll be better for multiplayer aspects (which I admitingly use infrequently)

Huh, genuinely surprised you guys would prefer streaming. I figured at a time where people seemed so upset about games not even hitting 1080p and wanting optimal frame rate, people wouldn't want to sacrifice that for the convenience.

Between the two and if they were priced equally, I'd take the option to download/install a full game over streaming it every time except for maybe some really slow paced puzzle titles or something.

Storage isn't really an issue with external HDs and easy uninstall/reinstall.

Hopefully there will be an annual membership that brings the price down to $4-$5 a month.

The nice thing about streaming is that it's instant. If I just want to check something out, I would rather be able to jump right in instead of waiting an hour or more for it to download. It would be cool if they gave you the option of both, but I don't see that happening.

And I haven't really heard of any issues about PS Now other than the pricing structure sucks. It sounds like the streaming actually works pretty good, but I guess that could vary a bit depending on the connection, just like anything else.

You should be able to start playing after a certain amount of the game is downloaded, but that's going to vary by game. It'd also be a headache switching from "streaming" to "local" after the game is done downloading, and the downloading itself is going to affect streaming quality.

I'm not sure you looked that hard:
http://www.windowscentral.com/playst...actually-works
What has been troubling, and would put a serious doubt on spending my own money on a subscription, is the reliability. There's long been a running joke about how many time Xbox Live goes down, but those people can't have ever used PlayStation Network.

Signing up was a nightmare because there was a problem with it. Trying to finish this and another article on the service was a nightmare because there was a problem with the service. Opening a game to play seems to require at least two attempts because the first time the "game is not available at the moment."

And while playing Ratchet and Clank the whole thing just green screened. It was still in-game because the audio was there, but the whole thing just threw its toys out of the pram and sat there glowing at me. Laughing.

PlayStation Now isn't a cheap subscription service. That this happens on a daily basis is enough to make me walk away.
You apparently can't use multiplayer voice on the service, Sony has shutdown MP servers for some games on the service, and if you lose your connection, PS Now will end you game, possibly causing you to lose progress:
https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/6910...ion-4/72167963

There looks to be a fair amount of connection issues and lost saves according to the support forum:
