The big takeaway is that anything that the XB1 can render at 1080p, the XB1X can render at 2160p fairly easily. So a 1080p60 game can render at 2160p60, while a 1080p30 game can render at 2160p30. And there appears to be some headroom for additional enhancements.

The tricky part would be if the developer wanted to increase framerate in addition to resolution, or is trying to increase from a lower starting resolution. So a 720p60 game isn't going to be able to increase its resolution almost 9x to 2160p60. And a 1080p30 game isn't going to render at 2160p60, at least not easily.

Some developers appear to be opting for checkerboarding to reach 2160p, apparently preferring other graphical effects and enhancements over hitting the "native" resolution mark, in some ways similar to how some titles run at 720p or 900p on the current XB1.

Isn't that what they have been out there touting though? They have been heavily relying on the whole "Most power console" advertising that I guess I would expect a little more than what we are seeing during testing so far.

I know most people are probably looking forward to the 4K performance the most, but I was more curious about the 60 FPS deal. I would rather see a bump in frame rate than hit 4K every time.

Wasn't the majority of what they showed at E3 30 fps? I don't remember any blanket 4K/60 fps promises/assurances. Individual titles, yeah, but...

I only recall them talking about Forza 7 being able to run at 60 FPS, but other then that all Microsoft has been advertising is "True 4K" and as you said, the "most powerful console ever" stuff. 4K at 60 FPS for all or most games has never been a target that i've seen or read about.

It's left up to the developer what they want to prioritize, much like how Star Wars Battlefront is 720p60 on the XB1 now, instead of 1080p30. There may also be different "modes" for some games, like having the option of playing 2160p30 or 1080p60. The PS4 Pro already has this with some games, with No Man's Sky running at either 1800p30 or 1080p60, depending on the display resolution you have set:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...e-adds-options

the XB1X is supposed to have the developers expliticty let you set the game mode within the game, instead of having to change your resolution settings:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...to-a-new-level
There have been instances of PS4 Pro games with higher performance 1080p modes only accessible if the front-end is set to a full HD output - No Man's Sky and The Last Guardian are two examples of this. If your Pro's set to 4K instead, you might never even know that an alternative, higher performing mode exists. With Scorpio, all game modes - resolution, performance or otherwise - must be available to all users regardless of the display the console is attached to
Getting to 60fps in some games may be trickier though, since sometimes it may be restricted by game logic, and thus the CPU, and the XB1X CPU isn't significantly faster than the XB1.

OK, forget about hitting both 4K/60fps for a second. It's starting to sound that they are having difficulty hitting one OR the other, let alone both. And I'm talking about native 4K, not upscaling or checkboarding.

If it's more in line with the PS4 Pro, I'm OK with that. I'm just trying to figure out what we're getting for the extra $100 they are asking for.

I'm not sure where you're reaching the "difficulty" conclusion. I thought the conclusion I quoted from Digital Foundry covered that pretty well. The relevant bit -

The data for most of the nine titles clearly demonstrates that the 4x resolution design goal is clearly met - even without access to new GPU features of the Xbox One X hardware. While the 900p scaling doesn't quite show the same kind of cut and dried improvement, two out of the three basic ports get there - or thereabouts - with hardware-specific optimisation likely to make up the difference.
Seems like quite a lot of titles, new and old, will able to scale to native 4K at similar performance. Some won't, and will need to do similar scaling methods like the PS4 Pro. The extra $100 gives you a system more powerful then the PS4 Pro, and probably more titles that can hit native 4K, but there will still be some titles that can't.

Yeah, 1080p titles can hit native 4K easily, at the same framerates. 900p titles could potentially hit native 4K with a little optimization from developers, since 2 of the 3 900p titles tested just shy of maintaining framerate parity at 4K with these "unoptimized" test ports.

All Star Wars Battlefront DLC is now free with EA Access. Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 are coming to The Vault soon.

Looks like Microsoft is no longer offering $5 gift cards for 3,500 points. To those who added them to your balance, you have only 90 days to use those gift cards.

I'd be excited for Firewatch if true. Assassin's Creed games sure do show up a lot on GwG.

Yep. I would actually say it's a great game. Considering they got it late on XB1, I'm surprised it didn't show up free on PS4 first.

It's completely fake. Forza has a pegi rating on it. You can see where firewatch was photoshopped under the Xbox branding bar

That's unfortunate. I already own Firewatch, but the actual titles don't jump out at me as something I'm likely to play any time soon, so I would've liked it if others had a free chance to play it.

I never really played Bayonetta since I thought the demo was crappy, but I wouldn't mind giving it a go. Otherwise a weak lineup. Trials is fun, but I suck at it.

What the hell is "Slime Pencher"? Or is it "Slime Rancher"? Can't tell with the crappy font. In either case, they've really had some shitty, no-name indie dreck lately. I can only assume Slime Whatever falls into that category as well...

Edit : I guess it's "Slime Rancher" and has been in Steam Early Access for a year. Looks kind of Minecraft-y, maybe. Doesn't appear to be my cup of tea, but maybe it's at least a half-step up from Runbow (faint praise though that is).

Heh, I thought the Games with Gold was pretty decent this month. Yeah, Slime Rancher is extremely iffy, but Trials Fusion, Bayonetta and a Red Faction game? I'm just fine with that.

I think Bayonetta might be the kind of thing where you have to fully immerse yourself in its ridiculousness to really appreciate it. I can see how that might not come through as well in a demo. I love it, warts and all.

For what it's worth, Slime Rancher has insanely good reviews on Steam too. I'm sure i'll still never play it
