Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

Forgot to mention, Microsoft is apparently halting BC on the Xbox One to make sure all games currently playable on XB1 will play on Scarlett.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2019/06/...compatibility/
That’s why we’re taking our work a step further and announced this week that thousands of games from all four generations will be playable on Project Scarlett. As such, we have now shifted our focus to help make the games you love playing on Xbox One compatible with future Xbox hardware. After this week, we have no plans to add additional Original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles to the catalog on Xbox One, but we’re excited to continue our work on Xbox compatibility across platforms and devices, which remains a top priority...

As a final thank you to the community, we are bringing Too Human to the Backward Compatibility catalog and are making it available digitally to everyone for free.
Too Human was the game Silicon Knights illegally used the Unreal Engine on, and Epic sued and won, forcing the game to be recalled and destroyed. Microsoft must've made some sort of deal between Silicon Knights and Epic to release this for free.

There's not a "One" link. I mean, there's this page, but it redirects you to the 360 marketplace to buy it:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/ga...ot:overviewtab

360 digital purchases from the web won't download to an XB1 automatically, but once you've purchased it, it will show up on your list of games "ready to install" on the XB1, and you can start a download from there.

It's one of my favorite games of all time. The DLC sucks though (and that's saying something because I like 99% of the DLC I play).

I played it when I was looking for something similar to Uncharted. I liked it but got stuck and never finished. I just claimed the BC version and now can dump my old disc and maybe finally finish.

Could you explain this more? Unless you bought the game digitally, you'll still need the disc to play it.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I was thinking BC games converted to digital but maybe my previous ones were digital/GWG purchases.

Yeah, BC games download an updated digital version to the console (it doesn't copy the game from the disc, as far as I know), but if you had to install a disc to get it, you will always need that disc inserted to play it.

I'm sad that the BC train has come to an end (temporary or not)... was really hoping Remember Me would make it before that happened. Luckily my 360 still works great so I can play it on there, but... I would have preferred it was BC on the XO.

i appreciate the reason why it is stopping though. trying to make everything this gen play on the new system is what they need to be focusing on now.

On the bright side, there's a possibility Enslaved may become a Games with Gold title down the road, especially considering there won't be any new BC titles going forward, so MS will have to dig through the existing BC catalog.

Anyone considering how GWG will change once Scarlett is released? I think maybe they'd keep the "2 XB1 and 2 (360/OG) games/month" strategy for maybe the first few months to year, considering there won't be many Scarlett titles at first, and all 4 of those games will be playable on Scarlett. After that, maybe it'd shift to "1 Scarlett, 1 XB1, 2 (360/OG) games/month." This would reduce the number of games XB1 owners could play by 1, and incentivize them to upgrade to Scarlett by giving them a "free" game for that platform.

This is what I'd expect. Maybe even 1 Scarlett, 1 XB1, 1 360/OG.

I do wonder if they'll ever 'repeat' any specific title on the GWG deal. Most of us here have been Gold members since at least when GWG started in 2013 (I'm fairly sure I have Defense Grid: The Awakening in my 360 GWG library), but people joining in 2019 going forward are getting a much smaller pool of games. Maybe MS will start repeating them with the release of Scarlett hardware. People who already have the games will complain (as they always do), but it will help get people onto GWG or GPU.
That, or we'll see more of the older GWG games show up and stay in the Game Pass side.

Possibly what they could do is:

1 Scarlett, 1 XB1, 1 360/OG, 1 repeat (XB1/360/OG).

One does wonder though, with MS's new focus on Game Pass, how much longer GwG really has. I'm guessing that as long as Sony is giving out games with PS+, MS will too, but maybe the overall number of free games will drop, or something to reducing MS's investment in these free games each month.

I really wonder what Game Pass is going to do to their game sales profit margin. If all their first-party games are going to be available for this service, who will be buying their first-party exclusives like their upcoming Halo, Gears and Forza games moving forward? How does that not hurt their bottom line - even if it helps with their console share in the next generation?

It's a bit like asking how Netflix can afford to make original material if it's first available on their monthly service.

Basically, MS is hoping for $10-$15/month for 12 months a year ($120-$180) from more users than are buying 2-3 $60 MS games a year. I'm betting a good portion of people end up only buying one $60 MS game a year, like maybe Halo but not Forza. If those people instead subscribe to Game Pass and play both (because, hey, Forza is included in the service, so why not?), that's still more revenue than they otherwise would've gotten from that person.

The individual games will likely have their revenue factor in the percentage of playtime on Game Pass, divided by total GP revenue, to figure out how successful it is.

It's a shift to "games as a service," and like the shift to software as a service, it's about steady, continuously monthly revenue, as opposed to the ups and downs in revenue as games are released and make the bulk of their revenue in the first few weeks of sales.

It's a little bit more like Disney releasing their big theatrical movies on Disney + on the same day they come out in theaters. Theoretically they could do that as well, but there's a reason that they don't.

I have no idea how Gamepass works, since I was never previously a member, but do they put all of their first party stuff on there day 1? I seem to remember some talk about that's one of the reasons Crackdown 3's sales were pretty dismal, but I don't know if it's all first party stuff.

I said it in the other thread, but I had let my Xbox Live subscription lapse because I barely gamed on the system. With this recent deal, I'm much more likely to get their next gen system right away, when I was almost certainly going to skip it earlier.

Well, it'd piss off the theater owners, for one. Disney doesn't have vertical integration all the way down the theatrical distribution chain. Microsoft owns the platform all the way to the console it's played on.

Also, Netflix and others have tried doing same-day theatrical and streaming releases. I think they only steered away from that to qualify for awards.

Finally, a single movie is 2-3 hours of entertainment, tops. You need hundreds of titles to make it worth it, and producing hundreds of hours of Blockbuster theatrical content a month is prohibitively expensive. This is why Disney+ is focused on releasing TV shows, which is lower budget and many more hours per title. For Microsoft, their games are intended to be played for tens to hundreds of hours, over weeks to months to possibly years. Think about how much time you put into a game vs how much time you put into watching a single movie at home, even with repeat viewings.

Finally, while Disney is protecting theatrical releases for now, they've most likely taken a hit in home video sales since their streaming deal with Netflix. It's all a tradeoff of revenue gained vs revenue lost. MS is betting that the revenue gained from the monthly subscriptions will more than offset the lost sales.

For video games, as with any content, there's going to be those who want to own a physical copy, not matter the "rental" options. Think of Collectors Editions and such. For others, they may prefer digital, but still want to own it. For others still, a subscription service will work for them. Restricting one doesn't automatically make one type of customer the other, you may just instead lose that customer.

Previously, people who wanted to play it right away had to basically buy it. If there's not enough of those, the multiplayer for the game could suffer. I think Sea of Thieves probably benefited from Game Pass in that multiplayer was heavily populated from day one, since lots of people with Game Pass at least tried it, as opposed to hoping it sells well out of the gate. Game Pass can help sell a game via word of mouth, and keep a game going where it may have failed in the traditional model.

Maybe it will be a flop for MS. Maybe they'll look at the revenue games are pulling in and say, "you know what? We were making more money with individual game sales." However, MS has been testing the waters for a while now, and apparently what they've seen looks promising enough to commit to it for the immediate future. There's a reason they're pushing people to upgrade to Game Pass Ultimate for cheap, and what they're likely seeing is that once subscribed, most people aren't dropping subscriptions.

That’s the eternal debate as entertainment shifts from a purchase model to subscriptions. Plus it’s likely not just cold numbers but also factoring in wanting to make a splash with the new system, hoping to claw back market share, etc.

I consider theatrical a bit of a different animal because it’s still a different experience from most people’s home theaters, but Moviepass showed that even that is considered a target for a subscription model.

So if I signed up for Ultimate and had Gold till 21, it won’t renew till then. But, what happens if I buy another year of Xbox gold? Can I do that anymore and add at least the 3rd year or no bc ultimate?
