I know plenty of people that buy every console, when they were released in generations. That's the point. Now they won't.
Taking video games pretty personal? I have both Xbox and PS. What games I like has nothing to do with the fact that the Xbox isn't exactly brimming with exclusives.
They will develop for the least common denominator.

I know some people really hate the idea of mid-generation refreshes, but I'm not sure how a brand new console 3-4 years would be any better since it leaves people who bought the previous console in the dust in just a few years. I like the idea of a generational upgrade that is optional while keeping compatibility since it gives consumers more options without completely screwing over early adopters.
Also, are you counting the Xbox One S as an additional console? That seems weird, even though they added the UHD player and some small performance changes. That would be like counting the "slim" PS4 as a new console as well to me.

The PS slim played games exactly the same as the fatter machines released at launch. (Not forgetting the removal of hardware BC.) I didn't count it as a new console. Now, the S and X are both technologically different from the original.

Not personal at all... just don't know why you would come in here and put down the systems with a bunch of garbage that others have already commented on.

Pick your poison. New system every so often or finding out the one you previously bought has been released again with better specs. Their is a reason the PC/console divide is what it is. I built a 5K computer back in 2013 and have no desire to go back to upgrading the $700 GPU every 2 years. A new bleeding edge console every 4-5 years sounds much better to me.
I imagine there will still be a "new" console generation in 2-3 years, all these mid-generation upgrades do is extend the life of the existing generation a little bit longer in a market where games take longer and are more costly to make. Seems to me that if someone doesn't like that type of product cycle, it's easy enough to ignore and wait for the "real" next generation of consoles that will probably come as part of the typical 6-7 year console cycle.

Didn't the One S also implement HDR? I'm pretty sure the regular One didn't have that firmware update, just the baseline PS4 did.

Yeah, you could play games like Forza Horizon 3 with HDR on the S but not on the launch XB1, and its CPU is very slightly faster. At the same time, I think that's what fumanstan means by 'basically the same' and the differences not being that significant. I bought an S out of necessity (the optical drive on my launch XB1 died), but I wouldn't have found those features compelling enough to warrant an upgrade otherwise.

Based on that, I would say the One X is the third "console" for MS in this generation then. HDR and a UHD drive is a significant improvement over the base version. Whereas the PS slim was just that, a slimmer version of their base console. So I would say Sony has two consoles for this generation. At the end of the day I'm not sure it really matters though, and would even give MS props for mentioning the Scorpio at the end of their E3 conference last year, that way people were not blind sided by the announcement later if they just bought the One S.

No interest in the X.
I'm perfectly happy with the S, which I got last year. It more than satisfies my gaming needs for this generation.
2 console upgrades in the 4 years the One has been in existence is crazy and anyone who keeps upgrading with every new console is crazy.

The S was the normal redesign of a console after its been on the market for a few years. We've seen it with pretty much every generation at this point.
To implement HDR and 4K playback, Microsoft were able to overclock the power on the CPU/GPU allowing for a whopping upgrade performance of 7%. They were also able to cut the price due to the fact the hardware in the Xbox One is a fraction of what it was costing to assemble in 2014.
The S is literally the same hardware as the original console with the exception of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and some minor tweaks under the hood. Microsoft never told customers to replace their Xbox One with the Xbox One S because they literally announced Project Scorpio a month prior to the One S announcement (Project Scorpio: E3 2016, One S announcement: July 2016).
I don't consider 4K/HDR to call a device "technologically different" when there were no "dramatic" changes to the SOC.

The S shouldn't be considered a new console... it was simply a console refresh due to very minor upgrades. There was no real improvement to games.
Looking at all the reviews along with the DigitalFoundry comparisons (as well as other sites), I have to say the X is a beast. It really does feel like you're getting a gaming PC for the living room. I'm impressed.

Since there does not appear to be a Forza 7 thread (that I could find), there's a code for some in game content from Totino's pizza:
RFXF-GRFR-PXMR
You have to go forza.totinos.com to redeem it. If you use it, just post that you did so people aren't trying for it. Thx.

Yep, already taken, or the code is wrong...
The game is good, just a little different from 6.
But I still prefer the Horizon series.

PS4 Pro utilized a GPU that was 2x faster than what's currently in the PS4 and added a whopping 1GB of RAM to help with background tasks. In addition, they made it a pain in the ass for developers to code for both the PS4 and PS4 Pro. The community was disappointed by the lack of upgrades to the console (specifically 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback) and the fact it seemed rushed to market.
The Xbox One X utilizes a GPU that's nearly 5x faster than what was in the Xbox One/One S, increased the RAM to 12GB (with 9GB dedicated specifically to gaming) by ditching DDR3 and eSRAM by going the route of GDDR5, and made the developers kit extremely easy to code for that they could port a game with Xbox One X enhancements within hours. Besides the other enhancements to the console, the Xbox One X showed that Phil Spencer and company are not fucking around when it comes to the Xbox brand from here on out.
The downside to the Xbox One X, which the PS4 Pro also shares, is the utilization of the same AMD Jaguar CPU found in the past models of their respective consoles. It's what holds the machines back from achieving insane power, but I assume both Microsoft and Sony will resolve that in the next generation.

Ha! I had no idea either, so I looked it up. Turns out it's made by the same studio that made Max: The Curse of Brotherhood. That was a really fun little game, so I think I'll actually check out Kalimba sooner than later. My only concern is that it looks like it's multiplayer only, based on my interpretation of the trailer, but I don't know if that's true. Hopefully not.

Frictional Games has announced that its soggy sci-fi survival horror game SOMA will be coming to Xbox One in a couple of weeks, complete with a new optional Safe Mode that enables you to explore the game's story without fear of being torn to shreds by the monsters that lurk within its creaking, dark corridors.
Critically acclaimed upon its release for PlayStation 4 and PC in 2015, SOMA explores existential themes as you strive to escape from underwater facility PATHOS-II. All alone, you'll face questions surrounding the idea of identity, consciousness and "what it means to be human".
SOMA will be making its way to Xbox One, two years after the game's release on PS4 and PC, on 1st December 2017 for $29.99/£23.99. SOMA is available to pre-order via the Xbox Store now and you can check out a teaser trailer for the Xbox One version of the game below.

I've gone on a bit of a spree with the new Black Friday deals, thanks to getting an additional 20% off with Samsung Pay ($50 Gift Cards for $40).
So far I've gotten :
Wolfenstien II Deluxe Edtion
Assassin's Creed 2 Gold Edition
X-Com 2 Deluxe Edition
Life Is Strange : Before the Storm Deluxe Edition
Minecraft Story Mode Season 2
Telltale's Batman : The Enemy Within Complete Season
Livelock
Tokyo 42
Dead Rising 4 Season Pass
Wow, that's a lot for a couple of days. I told my kids (who played Batman, Minecraft and Life is Strange episodic seasons with me) that they would have to wait for a sale before I got the next season. Time to pay the piper. I asked my daughter if she wanted Before The Storm and she said "Hella Yes!".
