Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

Ars has a review up:
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/...-for-software/

The review seems to focus a lot on negatives, but tucks this chestnut near the end:
In some ways, Microsoft doesn’t leave much room for us to complain about the Xbox One X’s sales proposition without sounding whiny. The cost-to-performance ratio is off the charts, and enhanced games make the console’s brute-force pixel-pushing potential abundantly clear.
The biggest complaint they have seems to be the lack of enhanced games to review, which considering it's pre-launch and most of the promised enhancement patches are out yet, is like well, yeah.

Digital Foundry has a video review up:

They also have a second video where they go into the "Boost" mode the XB1X uses on unpatched XB1 games and notes both framerate and even resolution improvements on a good number of games:

Depends I guess, 'cause the HALO 5 one includes updates to base game + the 4K enhancements.

While most are for only 4K/XB1X enhancements updates.

Those aren't the patch sizes, but the full game download sizes.

There's separate 4K texture downloads that owners of XB1 and XB1S won't automatically download, although you can enable this if you want (it won't do anything on your current console, but could make migrating to XB1X later easier).
https://www.tweaktown.com/news/58850...res/index.html

There may also be a patch to the base game that affects all consoles, but it shouldn't be as big.

Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

I'm thinking of getting an XBox One X and I'm not up to speed on how things are done (the only console I ever owned was the original XBox back in 2001).

Trying to get familiar with game prices and what/how they're offered.

The EA vault thing looks interesting, but I guess it never has the latest games - which means upon the One X's release, none of the games currently in the vault will be One X enhanced... only the latest editions will be enhanced?

How long does it generally take for a game to go into the vault?

I own the XBox One S. Games are typically $60 each. But, you can find them on sale if you look hard enough.

One big thing to note,

The console typically comes with 500 GB of internal storage, which is not enough. You would need to purchase an external hard drive. Reason being, this current generation of games needs to install files from the disc and updates from the Net on a semi-regular basis. Games typically have anywhere from 30 GB to 100+ GB of update files to install. But difference compared to the old XBox. If you don't have external hard drive, you will easily run out of space. Especially if you decide to purchase digital game downloads that have 100+ GB of downloads.

You will also need to purchase a 1-year XBox Live membership. Typically on sale for around $40. This allows you to play online with others and XBox gives free digital download games every month. Plus you get other discounts and freebies on a recurrent basis.

EA Access is great. Well worth $30/year.

It takes games about 9-10 months to go to the Vault.

At least two vault games : Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect Andromeda will be enhanced at launch.

The X comes with 1 TB. Enough for the first year I'd think.

Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

^^ Thanks for the info.

For me, the 1TB on the One X is enough space I think. I'm more of a casual gamer, and don't see myself getting hardcore - so the amount of games I play will be very limited. I'm thinking mostly sports (Madden, FIFA, and maybe NHL and Golf), some driving games (Forza and F1) and some adventure games (Tomb Raider, etc). Probably no more than 8-10 games. I have an external 2TB USB 3.0 HD sitting in my console (currently hooked up to my TV) if I need more space. I'm sure that'll be more than enough for me.

Thanks.

So I'd have to wait until around May for Madden 18 to get to the vault.

I'm a cheap bastard and don't like the idea of paying $65 CAD or more for a game. I could play Madden 17 and FIFA 17 in the meantime, just that they won't be One X enhanced.

Another dumb question: If I get the 1 year EA Access, if I decide that I don't want to get it for the second year - do all the games I've "purchased" and am playing cease to function or get removed? Or are they still available/playable? Basically are you just "renting" them?

Forza Horizon 3 + Hot Wheels. That is an amazingly fun game + expansion.

I figured there would be codes available since the game comes bundled in new XO purchases, but I can't find it online. Here is a place that sells the code for the game only for $34.79. Digital code entitles you to play on the XO or the PC.

1) Here's the list of Vault games and the date they went in :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EA_Acc...t_for_Xbox_One

Madden drops late February or early March. After the Super Bowl.

2) If your membership lapses, you can't play those games any more. You have to renew your membership to unlock it again.

Madden 18 is great. It's much better than Madden 17 and got better reviews.

Like I said, if you look hard enough, you can find them on sale. I saw Madden 18 recently on sale for $40. It will probably be discounted during the Christmas season.

$60 is really expensive for games. I typically don't pay that much now as I don't need the games right away. I did get Madden 18 for $47 with Best Buy's Game Club program.

I say if you're more of a casual gamer (like me) and want it mostly to use as a 4K UHD player, save the $250 and get the S.

It's also a solid streaming device for Netflix, Hulu etc. You can watch Netflix and Hulu content on it in 4K as well (for the S)

I agree that $60 is too much. I'd rather wait for the price drops - especially for games that don't offer much replay value when you've finished them. Sports and driving games you can pick up any time and play, so to me they offer more value.

I don't plan on playing online. Have no desire to get bitch-slapped by an 10 year old. I'll never get good enough to compete - not do I want to. I'd play more casually. So I won't get as much value from games because I'm not doing the online thing.

Thanks, that's great information.

That's a decent list of games in the vault. And yea, if they keep the same timing from last year, it looks like Madden 18 will be vaulted in February.

I have some time to buy... I'm not in any big rush. Plus I figure I can wait it out to make sure the One X is running well for everyone else. And maybe by the time I'm ready to buy, there'll be some One X bundle deal at a good price.

I’m so torn on this X. I won’t be 4K compatible for awhile, but the enhancement in speed and frame rate might be nice. I just don’t know if worth it. Anyone feeling similar?

I don't think his asshole is that lucky, considering he's been eating at Taco Bell.

Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

I'm gonna stick with my X (Scorpio) pre-order and pick it up tomorrow night or Tuesday at Best Buy.

I see they're offering a $50 discount with the purchase of an Elite controller at the same time. I'm interested in that.

Is the general consensus that it's still the best controller available and markedly better than the pack-in models?
