re: The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong

Axiom Verge (a Super Metroid-like made by one dude) is getting really solid reviews.

Giant Bomb: 5/5
USGamer: 5/5
Game Informer: 9.25/10
Gamespot: 8/10
IGN: 7.9/10

IGN's review below is on the low end and oddly seems to penalize the game for not being Metroid, but it does show some of why it looks great and is the only video up from a major site. I played the demo a bit at Best Buy a while back and liked it a lot, but I'm a Metroid fan, so I would.

I've been looking forward to that one for a long time, I will get to it as soon as I finish Bloodborne, so sometime in the next year.

Or when Bloodborne finishes with you!

Forgot to note that it's cross-buy on Vita (version coming later) and is on sale this week as part of the spring sale on PSN ($17.99).

Haha or something like that, though Bloodborne reminds me too much of one of my favorite games (Castlevania: SotN) for me to rage quit it anytime soon.

Wait, what?

Are we talking about the gothic/victorian horror setting, or is there something in the gameplay/structure?

Or more to the point, is Bloodborne a Metroidvania???

It's hard to explain honestly, but in a lot of ways it is a Metroidvania. You have what looks like a standard level and then find new ways it connects to itself and other areas until you have this enormous, extremely varied area that is fully interconnected thanks to gates you've discovered and opened (creating shortcuts and such). You have these little runt enemies, you have these big pain in the ass enemies, you have these massive boss battles. Everything respawns except for key enemies and bosses - but only after you've gone to Hunter's Dream or died. You have a single area where you can buy items, upgrade weapons, buy armor, improve your skills, etc; The world is vast and varied, you have identifiable regions, identifiable bosses. You can play specific things out of order, you are given literally no instruction or direction (in SotN is was search and destroy, essentially the same here). SotN had "Save Rooms", here you have the "Hunter's Dream" which isn't a save spot, the game appears to save after every major event, but it is your respawn point. Individual areas are linear, but overall it is anything but.

And each new place seems to bring its own type of new enemy, each area is distinctive and identifiable. The big issue a lot of people seem to have is there is literally one respawn point in each area, but where it will take you a little while to find your way through the area, when you get to a key spot you'll find a door or gate to open and be able to get back there within seconds after you respawn, there are shortcuts - both hidden and visible - everywhere. A lot of it just really reminds me of SotN for some reason What's more is it supports exploring and it's one of the few games that I happily oblige.

As of right now, it's the best game I've played since Tomb Raider (2013), that may change if the difficulty cranks up, but I also haven't tried Ori yet.

Thanks for expanding on that. That makes sense and is really interesting to me. I assumed it was more of a straight RPG, but it's looking like more of an action RPG with an emphasis on action and exploration.

Back to Axiom Verge, here's a much better video review...no score, but a much more interesting discussion about the game:

Oh yeah, the RPG elements are limited to having a character you can level up and purchasable weapons. It's a fairly fast paced hack n slash but is level based with some exploring like Castlevania, if it were another Skyrim I would have already clocked out.

Looks closer 8-bit, regular Metroid, rather than 16-bit Super Metroid. Which begs the question, if you're making a retro type game, is it really that much harder making things look like the SNES rather than the NES? It must be since we get oodles of NES looking games and hardly any SNES looking games.

Unfortunately most 16-bit style games end up looking like Flash games now, so to have the distinctive pixel art, most aim for straight 8-bit or old arcade.

The Souls games bear more similarities to classic Castlevania than to any other series, really. And not just aesthetically. This comparison has been brought up many times (though maybe not here).

Yeah, I just really hated the sluggish combat in the previous entries. Bloodborne fixes a good bit of that (though not perfect) and the setting is fantastic.

This is a guy just exploring the first area, I think the similarities are visible but maybe not entirely evident:

Spotify works great. If you have the app on your phone, you can control it via Spotify Connect (and it lets you login using it as well) which is built into the Spotify app. You can also control the volume of Spotify from your phone.

With some birthday money, my tax return, and discounts on all three items, it just made sense to finally go all in.
Setup was a breeze, but then my kid woke up from her nap, so I had to stop there. Last of Us is downloading now. First thing I did was install Spotify.

Welcome Dan! Be sure to send us Friend invites!

I'm surprised they sell a PS4 bundle in Canada that doesn't include NHL 15.
