re: What console are you buying at lunch? (September Edition)
Those preorder charts don't seem very accurate to me. COD on X1 for instance only went up by 6000 in a week. Only counting Gamestop as a retailer, that is 1 per store over all 7 days. It's probably much closer to 1 per store per day or two (most likely a lot in some stores and 0 in others etc), so i dunno, 20k or more? And that's just GS. Does this site count all retailers or just randomly guesses numbers? Anyone know where they get their info?

I still don't get why anyone would pre-order any games at this point. Do we think there will be a Call of Duty shortage or something? I know there's little risk, but there's little incentive either. At least last year, Best Buy was giving some money back. I know Game Stop pushes pre-order like crazy, but I don't understand why folks won't wait for closer to release date. The consoles will be scarce, but the games won't be -- at least I doubt it.

The only time I pre-order is when I get free stuff or future credit. I haven't seen much of that for the next-gen games other than maybe a map pack or so. I'm hoping that Amazon starts the 10 dollar credit for some next-gen titles but I haven't seen it yet. Other than that the whole getting you to pre-order out of fear of not getting your hands on a big release is silly.

And if you're pre-ordering a console online, it makes sense to order your games too rather then having to take a separate trip to a store.

Come on chess! There are four, FOUR new people buying X1s here! If that's not an accurate representation I don't know what is. Sony is doomed.

But if it puts Sony in a positive light, it must be used.

Xbox One has come a long way around, but at launch I will only be getting a PS4. While it wouldn't break me to buy both, it seems like a lot to buy at once and I'd rather get familiar with one system than have to juggle between two.
....
I'll be jealous of XO owners for almost a year, but I'll make do with a PS4 for 2013-2014 and my birthday is tomorrow -- don't be surprised if I announce that I just bought an XO in 366 days from now.

For the past 8 years while MS was owning the charts, VGC was good enough to cite. Now that Sony has the leg up, they're not reliable?

The implication that anybody would have to "cherry pick" to find good news for Sony at any point this year is just .

They're a fun discussion point, I actually don't mind them posted despite how inaccurate they may be since they're lacking internet sales data.

Well shit. I just got an email from my mother and for some odd, idiotic reason she just sent me a $600 Amazon Gift Card for my birthday (apparently I'm the World's Best Son or something). Anyhoo, I hate having a big balance at Amazon that gets eaten one Blu Ray or Kindle book at a time, so fuck it, I'm getting an XO as well (already paid off my PS4 with the inlaw's GC the last two years). Looks like it won't be a Launch Edition , but hopefully I'll get it soon enough. Most important thing is it's paid off before 1/1/14 when NV starts collecting sales tax on Amazon purchases. So looks like I'll need to change my vote in the next poll as well.

But you're still not above giving somebody a hard time for posting them?
It's patently obvious that VGC doesn't take everything into account, which is why they should be viewed as a predictive sample at best...not a perfect sample, but probably the largest publicly available sample. They don't tell you exactly what the numbers will end up, but they should give an idea of where they are proportionally.

vgchartz is not taken seriously by the gaming industry, but they even disput NPD numbers from time to time. NPD number seem to be more accurate, but they don't include some of the most important retailers (vgchartz is more limited of course). I think that's one of the reasons they started restricting the kind of information they gave. Up until a few years ago they would say COD sold 2 millions this month. Now they only say COD was number 1, Mario 2, Halo 3, etc.
vgchartz numbers have been used in forums for a long time of course. They are forum friendly.
