Re: Most impressive video game consoles at the time they were released?

I would have to say Dreamcast, but I'm pretty biased and love that console dearly. Still, I think it's fair as the N64, in hindsight but also at the time, was a pretty marginal improvement over the PS1. Cleaner looking but not really more complex in any way, and a lot of PS1 games looked better than 64 games. The Dreamcast was the first 3D console that really had impressive visuals IMO. Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Virtua Tennis, NFL 2K, Shenmue. All very impressive stuff at a level no one had really seen before. The PS2 came quickly after and looked better, but it wasn't as impressive cause the Dreamcast got there first.

I second this. In the late 70s, everyone had an Atari2600, it wasn't until the NES came out that every home seemed to have a game console again.

It's probably because we didn't get one until way after launch, but I'll go with NES. I remember being amazed by Super Mario Bros at my cousin's house. By the time we got the console, Metroid was already out, with Legend of Zelda to follow. Before that we would bring out the 2600 every once in a while and I'd try to lay a game like Superman, but in a few months we'd get bored and it would go back in storage. But the NES never got put away.

I loved Super Mario, but it was the Legend of Zelda that blew my mind.

Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64
The game was really impressive when it first came out. Just being able to explore a fully 3D world was great fun.

Sega Dreamcast
The aesthetic and functionality of the hardware was too cool. I loved the VMU's, the better looking 64-styled controller. The first games I got were Resident Evil Code Veronica and Shenmue.
