EA Drops Online Pass; Replaces Program With Free Kittens
Actually, there are no kittens. That was a disappointment designed from stopping you thinking too highly of EA for this move:

Now, EA says the program has run its course. "Many players didn't respond to the format," the company told GamesBeat. "None of our new EA titles will include that feature." The industry still isn't completely sure how to handle used game sales, but at least this unpopular program is at an end.

Well that's good they are dropping it, it was a really shitty practice. So, does anything happen to the games that require it now? Though I would imagine that would soon become irrelevant as much as EA drops support for its games.

Good, I'm allergic to kittens.
To note, EA seems to be trying to clean up a lot since the whole SimCity fiasco. Almost as if the board knew it was going to go horribly and used it as a way to kick John Riccitiello to the curb.

If you're allergic to kittens then three of them come with every used game you buy. Otherwise, it's leeches!

I could use the leeches, those are good for you. Otherwise I'll be taking Zyrtec every morning and, well, fuck that.

Call me a cynic, but all I think when I see that announcement is that they've got a plan for worse next-gen DRM.

There is no way EA is doing this unless they have a plan to screw us with even larger fees or more frustrating DRM.

See I thought that my wife until recently was Wiccan, and as it turns out she is not as she told me. She's into the Moon and Sea Gods specifically, so she considers herself more Pagan than anything else. Thank goodness I'm basically agnostic, if I actually had a real religion, I might be concerned or something .

My guess is that they're wanting to move more in the highly-profitable direction of microtransactions. You can't sell loads of multiplayer weapons, gameplay advantages, and avatar clothes to people who don't have access to multiplayer.

That's actually a really interesting point. But are there really people willing to buy those online perks via microtransactions, but not to either buy a new game or purchase an online pass? Can't imagine those two types of consumers intersect very often.

People are more apt to spend money when they feel they have a choice (microtransactions), than they are when they feel they are being forced to pay(online passes).
