What was the secret of Gearbox's success?

From 'CodeHunters' To 'Aliens: Colonial Marines'

The article suggests that liberal borrowing from Ben Hibon's film CodeHunters transformed Borderlands from "a very generic-looking science fiction game" to a major hit.

"“To be absolutely clear,” Hibon told Gather Your Party, “I have never created or designed anything for Gearbox or Borderlands. Gearbox saw my work and decided to reproduce it – make it their own – without my help or my consent.”"

They also appear to have copied the work that Olly Moss did for Star Wars trilogy posters for Borderlands 2.

"Taken alongside CodeHunters, however, it starts to paint a slightly more troubling picture. At what point does inspiration cross the line? At what point should a game developer decide to seek permission to use other peoples’ work rather than call it their own?"

The article contrasts the lack of credit that Hibon and Moss received with the hefty credit that Gearbox gave TimeGate leading into the release of Aliens.

Already several comparrisons on the net. Some are just to close to be a coincidence. It's probably no secret that mang game Devs and studio get some inspiration from other's work. As far as Boirderlands itself; up to the individual to make the call. However it's a fact that the game broke new ground with something never seen before in gaming. If this was a lop (which could very well have been) then no-one would even be bringing this up.

I forgot about Borderlands changing its graphics. I now remember being interested in the game until it went cell shaded.
