It's a factor for a larger number of people than you might imagine. One of the stats tracked on TrueAchievements is completion percentage, and there are people who take it very seriously. Some won't play anything that jeopardizes their 100% achievement completion statistic.
Gamers like numbers, some more than others.

Finishing a game means nothing in the real world.
Turning your game console on means nothing in the real world.
People play games for different reasons.

Giving man a virtual fish is stupid,
Teaching a man to virtually fish ... yeah, I see your point now.

Playing games are a form of entertainment. I guess you could say that getting achievements is a form of entertainment, and that's fine, but to actively avoid playing a game because you can't complete all the achievements? That's just crazy pants.

I do buy quite a few games thank you very much. Just as long as they are worthwhile titles

A dumb question for you midnight launch experts.
I now have about $ 300 in gift cards that I didn't have when I placed my pre-order. Can I bring them in at midnight with the credit card I have on my order. I don't know midnight protocol. This seems really obvious to me but wanted to be sure before I got in there.

i know with amazon you can always go back and change payment methods or add gift cards. i'd assume you could do it with big retailers, but it might involve a call to their main number. what store?

yeah. i'd call their 800 # and see what they can do. i'd imagine they'd be able to do it, but you have to do it through a CSR.

This. This. This.
The only reason I am contemplating selling my Day One console vs keeping it is the fucking Kinect sensor. Gaming in dedicated theater with front projection. Equipment in the back. Screen and Kinect in the front.
Very frickin frustrating. To think originally the Kinect had to be connected for the damn thing to work? Anybody with a theater would basically have been SOL. Give us a damn cable already to hook your fucking precious Kinect sensor to our new Xbox One.

Also, the rewards program already had tiers based on gamerscore even before that.
And that's what some people would say when they hear that there are others who spend hours of their lives posting on a "DVD Talk" forum on the internet.

I will have to quote the brilliant pop singer...

In all seriousness though, I am kind of surprised that we aren't mostly mature enough here to recognize folks take pleasure and entertainment out of different things and different amounts. Some enjoy the completion percentage of games. Some enjoy having a huge gamerscore. Some just want a good story. Some calculate price/hours playtime to make sure their collection hits a certain ratio. And some play games simply so they can bitch about them in a more educated way.
Whatever makes you happy.

Ultimately, if someone playing a game or not playing a game is primarily decided upon by achievements (I don't mean just getting an achievement here and there), I'm willing to bet they have some objectively observable mental imbalances. Because it is an obsessive behavior and not something they get joy out of.

Anytime I hear about Achievements arguments I remember this list:
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged...211201492.html
With Dead Rising's 7 day survivor and Rock Bad 2's bladder of Steel achievements, I think these Developers are some kind of digital Masochists
And on PS3's Trophies in order to get Platinum on Gran Turismo 5 you need to do two 24 hour real time endurance races!

Yeah they should have allocated at least one or two timeouts of sorts for a few minutes so you can refresh or whatever. Up to you when to use them and when they are gone they are gone.

That's like saying you won't sleep with a woman unless she's a perfect 10 and you can give her multiple orgasms. You'd never get laid, because we all know perfect 10's are frigid.
