Probably nothing else so pithy. You could say "premium subscription requirement" instead though.

Re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

First use of term "paywall" I could find on DVDTalk - http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9689855-post329.html

First use in the VG Section - http://forum.dvdtalk.com/11349110-post4165.html

First use by a poster in the VG Section - http://forum.dvdtalk.com/11793447-post2976.html

So I guess you could pick any of those... provided DVDTalk's search is good anyways...

So you can blame any of those if you really wanted to.

Implying that a company won't make decisions based on money because "they already have some" must be the most absurd claim so far in this thread, and that's really saying something.

Don't you think it makes a little more sense to remove the Kinect from the bundle, sell the system to people for $100 less without costing MS a cent more in production cost and still making the Kinect 2.0 available for purchase for those who change their minds later? Even at the risk of letting publishers know what they already know (that most consumers aren't using the Kinect and that they don't really want it)?
I'm not saying my prediction is right... but it is.

No... I think MS will find other ways to reduce the cost of the console by June that will not affect performance. Component prices will go down overall, which is normal for all consoles. Maybe they'll have a 120GB version. Maybe they'll drop the headset from the 4th or 5th batch of consoles. Maybe HDMI IN (and all processing/software/licensing) gets dropped in that theoretical 120GB version. I'm just saying... MS is betting on Kinect in a BIG way, and I just don't think they're going to drop it from their console just to get the price down, when there are other things that can be done to accomplish the same goal without drastically reducing their net revenue per console.

I could very will be wrong, and I probably am. But that's my prediction.

I don't agree with what chess say in general in that post, but I don't agree with you in this case regarding Valve.

Valve is a private company, and they care about money, but it's not the most important thing for them. Other way we would already have Half Life 6.

To be fair, Newell/Valve have billions galore. They're in the business of providing a maintainable and profitable service more than producing games.

Valve has also found other ways to maintain revenue streams through their games that don't require pushing out sequels left and right. For example, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 are nothing but profit since going F2P. Valve is doing the same for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive which will be announced as F2P tomorrow (for Steam at least, no idea if they'll do the same on the 360 and PS3).

Re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

My first recollection of seeing the term "paywall", was after the big internet bubble burst and companies started charging for some features because the internet was no longer a magic money machine.

For what it's worth, I wasn't blaming anyone for the term paywall. I've just seen it used often now on other sites recently to describe Gold subscriptions, which I just thought was weird.

Paywall reminds me of the New York Times.

Premium services reminds me of Porn websites subs.

What I meant, and shouldn't have to explain, is that they don't need money up front. They aren't beholden to shareholders or a board and are in a position of financial strength where a hatfull of money now isn't likely to be enough to persuade them to give up alternate ongoing revenue streams.

I certainly didn't mean that they are somehow above making or taking money, but I'll bet you knew that already.

I think I first heard the term either here or on an iOS site I lurk on. It's used in that space to describe that point in a free game where it's really hard to progress without paying.

I think that scenario is a good use of the term.

Of course. It's just that among all the assumptions you're making that essentially boil down to "L4D3 won't be MS exclusive because of reasons in my head," that one stood out to me as the most hilarious.

"Reasons in my head" is a pretty dismissive way of describing the points I actually made. The abridged history is:
  • Gabe Newell hated and said inflammatory stuff about the PS3 architecture
  • Source ran poorly on PS3 in the early years
  • As a result, L4D, L4D2 and Orange Box were all PC/360
  • EA had somebody else port Orange Box to PS3, which was subpar and disowned...and I think Valve has self-published ever since (I have it and was happy to get even a subpar port)
  • Eventually it was all sorted out and PS3 got the version of Portal 2 with Steam
  • Both PS4 and X1 have architecture that should run Source just fine
  • Valve has no history of taking money hats, has no shareholders and has reliable revenue streams
  • Valve competes directly with Games for Windows
I really think if Valve were to go exclusive, it would be on their own platform, and I think given the business model they are heading toward, they'll want to get their games on as many platforms as possible.

I might have picked it up from NeoGaf in regards to apps being tied to Live Gold, but I know I didn't just make it up. It's in the vernacular out there, whatever connotations some may think it has.

Re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

I do resent having to pay for Live to use my Netflix. I have a current subscription, but I did let it lapse for a little while and found I couldn't use Netflix. It did piss me off considering you don't pay on PS3. It was doubly annoying because I think at that point the 360 wasn't offering 5.1 audio while the PS3 was.

You left out Newell's complaints about Xbox Live policies stifling updates. I think he even called it a "train wreck".

Re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

Well, NFL Sunday Ticket is now removed from the PS3. Step 2 is making it Xbox exclusive. If not, I'm going to be pissed that I can't watch it on either system

Had to soften it a bit. Heads explode when I describe anything as a train wreck.
