Video game capture devices?
 

Would need it to work with both PC and Mac, so a dedicated capture card isn't an option. I've been looking at this one...

That would be cool for editing certain games (like Uncharted 1/2/3) into movie versions. Wonder if it'd keep the multichannel audio intact as well.

Then there's this one, that can capture video without a PC. It's also cheaper than the other two, although you'd need to [use a harddrive with it (internal or external):

Have one. Just looking to add a few new series to it during the months when I'm not making movie related videos.

Do you have to hook that up to a laptop or PC or is it possible to just hook it up to an external hard drive that's powered up and then hook that up to a PC for editing?

The Elgato device in the OP needs a PC/Mac for the actual capturing.

The AVERMEDIA C281 that I linked to in my post can capture without being connected to a PC. You either install an internal drive directly into the device, or you can attach an external drive to it.

That's awesome! I have an extra 1.5 TB external hard drive not doing anything right now (right after I bought that and opened it up I also got the same model at 2 TB for a little less money and am using that to backup my PC) and it would be so cool to make videos of our game play! I'm not sure I can convince my wife that this is a "necessity" in the budget as we look ahead at the year but man, that would be so fun!

See it's junk like this that I need to properly capture, instead of just shooting cell phone footage of.
