Someone may have read something on another site explaining the issue that the link I provided didn't.

What are the best deals on this console now? Not sure I'll actually get one... but < $100 might sway me.

Probably higher than the full retail price if you can find one (N recalled all the unsold units)

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I've seen this on ebay for the past few months:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Wii-U-...MAAOSwa~BYUZ53

Edit: I purchased a refurbished console directly from Nintendo about 2 years ago and the console looked brand new. No finger prints or dust and I've had no problem with the Wii U since.

Yeah, I got a refurb directly from Nintendo for my kid sister a couple Christmases back, and I had the exact same experience. If not for the 'refurb' printed on the box and the lack of a charging cradle, it's indistinguishable from a brand new console. The suspicion is that these were repackagings of returned, unsold stock from stores and not refurbs in the sense of...well, refurbs.

That's a shame. I'll keep an eye out for eBay or GameStop deals I guess. Not in any sort of rush to get one obviously.

I highly recommend Severed for anyone with a Wii U or Vita (combat is done by screen swiping). It's made by Drinkbox the same studio that did Guacamelee. I played about an hour and a half today and it's fantastic. It's on sale on the Wii U shop for $10.49 right now.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I saw a single Mario Kart Wii U bundle at Target today. So either the reports of Nintendo recalling them was incorrect or it might have been an after Christmas return. Either way, since production has ended they are scarce and this is the first one I've seen in the wild in quite some time. They also had a small section blocked off for the Switch, so it will be interesting to see if they keep it condensed to that small of an area or expand it once it comes out.

Is there a list of Wii U games that are still coming out this year somewhere?

Zelda, and... ?

Other than Zelda there is no more games scheduled. Even on Gamestop and Amazon Zelda is the only listed as still coming. I'm sure there will be a Just Dance release still coming are some digital only stuff but otherwise that looks to be it.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Differences between the two versions of Zelda. Other than the 720p vs 900p, not much you are missing by playing it on Wii U.

Both launch on the same day, March 3.

Both have a frame rate of 30fps.

Both versions of the game offer the same content.

On a TV, the Nintendo Switch version of the game renders in 900p while the Wii U version renders in 720p.

The Nintendo Switch version has higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game’s Open-Air feel.

The physical copy of the Wii U version will require 3GB of available memory on the Wii U system or an external drive.

Some icons, such as onscreen buttons, differ between the two versions.

A Special Edition and Master Edition of the Wii U version are not available.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the last Nintendo game for Wii U

"From a first-party standpoint, there's no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U."
"From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future. The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We're going to continue to support that."

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I know it was a sales disaster, but I think it had a pretty damn good library of games. It's one of the smallest game collections I have for a console, but the kids and I really enjoyed it. We also got a heck of a lot more use out of it than the Wii. Looks like Breath of the Wild will be the last game I add to the collection.

Spoiler:
Bayonetta 2
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Game & Wario
Zelda Wind Waker HD
Zelda Twilight Princess HD
LEGO City Undercover
Mario Kart 8
NES Remix Pack
New Super Mario Bros Wii U + Luigi
Pikmin 3
Shovel Knight
Splatoon
Super Mario 3D world
Super Mario Maker
Super Smash Bros Wii U
Wonderful 101
Yoshi's Woolly World
Zombi U

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Yeah I have much love for the Wii U as a system. I would have liked more games and expanded virtual console releases but I have 20 or so great games for it. The tablet is also perfect for those Zelda remasters using the screen as map and inventory management. I made a list of interesting looking exclusive indies that were released on the Wii U shop and I've been working my way through them.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

The funny thing is that the software droughts early on are what ultimately led me to love the Wii U so much. With fewer showstopper-type titles, I wound up picking up games that otherwise would've slunk in under my radar. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in particular won me over with its split-screen-less local multiplayer.

I think my list looks something like:
  • Bayonetta / Bayonetta 2
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • DuckTales: Remastered
  • Game and Wario
  • Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
  • The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
  • Lego City Undercover
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Need for Speed: Most Wanted U
  • NES Remix 1 / 2
  • New Super Luigi U
  • New Super Mario Bros. U
  • Nintendo Land
  • Pikmin 3
  • Pushmo World
  • Rayman Legends
  • Shovel Knight
  • Skylanders: Giants
  • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
  • Splatoon
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • Wii Party U
  • The Wonderful 101
  • Yoshi's Woolly World
  • ZombiU

There are still several games I'm interested in and haven't picked up yet, but...well, maybe Hyrule Warriors and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE will find their way onto the Switch at some point.

It's far and away my favorite Nintendo console, although I admittedly missed out on the SNES and N64. (I was a Genesis kid during the SNES era, and I was a PC gamer during the N64's run.) Less life-changing for me than the original NES was, of course.

Also, it plays Wii games (and Wii played GC games) - no backwards compatibility with the Switch, that is unless you wanna re-buy your old games on their VC.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

While my Wife was away yesterday, My Daughter and I had a Daddy-Daughter day. Even at only seven, she's a chip off the old block. She is a huge gamer. She's had a controller in her hand as long as I can remember.

When I asked her what she wanted to do, of course the first place she said was let's go to GameStop so off we went. Something was different in the store because the Wii U demo machine was no longer there. The was just a huge Nintendo Switch Cardboard cut out in it's place.

As we looked around, there was the Wii U demo, parked right beside the backdoor. I'm guessing it was going out with tonight's trash run. It made me sad to see it go. We had a lot of good times playing on it over the years. It's the reason we bought a Wii U a couple of years ago.

Anyway, I thought I would share this story with everyone. Hopefully, new memories will be made when the Switch Demo starts rolling out into stores.

I'm going to guess that the Switch demo units will be the only time I see a Switch in someone's hands in public.

Jokes on you when everyone stops their game of basketball or gathers at a rooftop party to play the Switch!
