N64 vs PSX
Might as well since we have a Genesis vs. SNES thread.
My vote goes with the PSX. The king of console JRPGs, enough said. Also, for every good N64 game released there seemed to be 5 good PSX games being released. I don't know the actual library #s but I'd be willing to bet PSX has 2-3 times the number of games the N64 had. I meant to add a poll, if the mods could add one it'd be appreciated. |
Re: N64 vs PSX
Poor Sega, not even in the conversation...
I don't care what kind of Nintendo fanboy you are or how much you loved Mario 64 or Golden Eye or Mario Kart or the wrestling games, it's PSX by a landslide. The unfortunate part is that because this was pretty much the first foray into polygons and such, most of the games are really hard to look at IMHO, at least compared to the previous generation (Genesis/SNES). The 2D games are still awesome, though. Plus the PSX didn't have Superman 64... |
Re: N64 vs PSX
Playstation without a doubt. I also love my N64 and I actually think it has better overall games (Mario Kart 64, Starfox 64, Zelda: OOT) but those are just too few and far between to take on the onslaught of awesome PS1 titles. I still hold FFVII, Castlevania: Sotn, Metal Gear Solid, FF Tactics, FFVIII in very high regard. Ah...PS1....back when Squaresoft was cool.

Good lord PSX. Close thread.

Re: N64 vs PSX
Playstation brought so many great franchises and it blew away the N64. FFVII, Gran Tourismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, Tony Hawk, Tomb Raider, Spider-Man, etc...

Re: N64 vs PSX
This one isn't even close.

Re: N64 vs PSX
I was a playstation guy during that era, and it had a bunch of good games. I probably have a thousand hours in Twisted Metal 2, I thought the second and third Crash Bandicoots were great, I loved Gran Turismo and don't even get me started on Symphony of the Night. But most of the games on PS1 have not aged well at all, and I'm not a huge RPG guy.
In contrast the N64 was a top heavy system with some serious classics that still hold up today: Mario 64 Zelda: Ocarina of Time Mario Kart 64 Smash Bros. Paper Mario Goldeneye It's a quantity vs. quality and a then vs. now argument, and I'll go with quality and games I'd play right now. N64. |
Re: N64 vs PSX
This generation and the PS2 generation I mostly missed out on, but I did end up playing a lot of PSX ports on PC, namely Final Fantasy 7 and 8, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, etc. PSX wins for me, where as the N64 I really I only enjoyed playing Smash Bros with friends.

i still have my n64 i gotta get more games for it though. ebay here i come

Re: N64 vs PSX
PSX
The Playstation to me felt much more successful. You had continued series that didn't feel like complete rehashes (for me at least, the FF games, Symphony of the Night, and Metal Gear Solid), a whole new generation of fighters (Marvel, Tekken, SFA, Bushido Blade, Dead or Alive), and a slew of quality original games (Resident Evil, Intelligent Qube, Wipeout, Tomb Raider, PaRappa, Suikoden, Oddworld, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal, etc; ), while many of these series have lost the qualities that made them great, for the time (and in many ways, still now) the PSX was superior. I owned both and enjoyed my N64 a good bit, Goldeneye was a great time, enjoyed Starfox, even Waverace 64 and Tetrisphere were a blast. But while the Nintendo "big IPs" are quality titles, I was mostly bored of them that generation. Mario 64 did nothing for me (it was actually quite boring at the time, I warmed up to it a little a few years later but still don't care for it), the success of Smash Bros still escapes me, Paper Mario should have been so much more than it was, and Mario Kart 64 was the franchises worst... That said Zelda:TooT is arguably the best in the franchise. With that, I would kill for a modern iteration of Blast Corps. |
Re: N64 vs PSX
I followed the Final Fantasy series from SNES to PSX and never looked back. I never purchased another Nintendo console after the SNES (My brother had an N64, but I rarely played it).

Re: N64 vs PSX
Psx. If Nintendo hadn't been so stubborn and switched to cd format the N64 would've been the biggest console of all time.

Re: N64 vs PSX
PSX because of Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style!

Or are you just saying that because Square would have put FF VII on the N64 if they had switched formats? |
Re: N64 vs PSX
since this is a n64 vs psx thread,

Well, in that case we wouldn't have gotten a Playstation, right, because Nintendo would have partnered with Sony. Though I thought there was something about the Sony contract giving them exclusive rights to the games, which is why everything fell apart.

Re: N64 vs PSX
N64: Goldeneye, No Mercy, Mario kart 64
So N64 for me |
Re: N64 vs PSX
I loved Mario 64...but after playing Banjo Kazooie...I could no longer tolerate cute games which Nintendo had a reputation of making.
I enjoyed the more mature games on PSX. |
Re: N64 vs PSX
I had an N64 first and only got a PSX much later in its cycle (though the slim version wasn't even a rumour yet) but my vote goes for PSX.

The problem is that 99% of those games are unplayable.

N64 definitely had the multiplayer down, but I'm a single player gamer first and foremost and PSX had the advantage with that. N64 was for weekend sleepovers, PSX for every other time. |
