Top 100 Video Games of All Time on G4
Anybody else watching this? What do you think?
Kind of surprised to see Sonic the Hedgehog as low as #50, but it's tough to rank EVERY game ever made. Also interested to see where all the original and sequel games rank in relation to each other. GTAIV was already on the list, but I liked GTA3 and Vice City better. Mario 64 was already on, and I assume SMB and SMB3 will be very high. |

I haven't seen the show. But, it is probably safe to say that the list is going to be completely arbitrary (as most of these kinds of lists usually are).

These list shows are a reason to listen to people talk about games/movies/music/etc which is why I enjoy them, as a list itself I expect it to be lacking.

The funniest to me are the comments on G4's site. They bitch and moan about something great like Day of the Tentacle being rated higher than more current games but then praise shit like Minecraft.

Me too. Sonic was a landmark game, period and certainly deserves to be in the top 100. While I was not in love with it, I know I spent many a nights playing the first 3 iterrations. I think much of the hate probably stems from the fact that everything since the first three games have been a steaming pile but some games do not translate over to new systems very well unfortunately.
But, I can kind of see the hate. It is a rather simplistic game of running through the levels, without that much to explore (at least compared to the Mario games). It was a landmark game though, and maybe you have to have been there to appreciate its impact. It brings up the question again of, do they include influential games or truly "the best?" |

Depends on the criteria for the ranking and if it values impact to the gaming industry; you could certainly argue that Angry Birds gets a lot of credit for making smart phone gaming huge.
While I do give Angry Birds a lot of credit for showing developers that the smartphone console is a great platform to make games on, there's been far better games than Angry Birds to be released on Android and iOS. Hell, the list already sucks for including a fucking Scrabble rip-off at #99. Here's 40-21:
