That is one daunting list I would say that you would want a couple of short pallet cleansing games before jumping into one of the more long epic games.
I would say the the first game of Halo/Call of Duty followed by Portal/ Portal 2/ Ghostbusters. You get a popular shooter followed by a much more lighthearted action game. Each of these games can be completed in less than 10 hours. After those you can't go wrong with RDR or Mass Effect.

As much as I enjoy SR2, if he wants something different that GTA for his next game, it's probably not the best choice.
I'll throw in another vote for Ghostbusters. Its a fun game and pretty short, good to cleanse your palate, unless you're an acheivement whore. The online cheevos are a real pain in the ass.

I'm an achievement whore...to an extent. I usually don't go for online achievements or super insane collection ones (i.e. I didn't kill 200 pigeons in GTA). I also won't play a game through twice for achievements, unless it offers a different experience (two storylines or something like that)
*There are two achievements in direct opposition to each other. One is do as little damage possible (they give a $ figure) in one playthrough and the other is to basically wreak havoc on the city and cause $x in damage. Then there is one for beating the game on hard (wouldn't recommend on first playthrough).
So yeah, they want you to play this game... a LOT. It's fun, but not that fun.

Yeah, I definitely won't be doing that for Ghostbusters. I'm guessing I'll do one playthrough and get as many as I can...probably go with the high $. And yeah, forget the one with beating it on hard.
I'm not against going out of my way to get achievements...but I have my limits.

Started Ghostbusters last night, and I'm impressed. Fun game, doesn't seem too long (beat two levels in about two hours), and enjoyable. Good "in-between" game for sure.

Ghostbusters with four players is a total blast...It was a good change from the "Blood & Bullet" games.

whoa, we have a very similar backlog. I'm going with Borderlands or Alan Wake next since I heard such good things about them both. I'd recommend a short game in between since you just finished GTA4.

How short is Alan Wake? That's one that I'm curious about.

I have a similar backlog too--am partway through Enslaved, Borderlands, and Arkham City, with RDR, Assassin's Creed 1, Gears of War, GTA IV, Halo Reach, and others still waiting. I really want to pick up Fallout 3 and Skyrim but know I don't have time to play them.
I've played the Half Life portions of the Orange Box, though, and recommend them as a break from sandbox play, as others said.

Speaking as a reformed achievement whore, abandon those quests for anything that isn't fun. That's why you have such a huge pile of shame.

That's why I stopped doing the "collection" achievements...right around the time I realized I was going to spend another 10 hours or so shooting the 300+ pigeons in GTA IV and its expansions. That was pretty much it as far as those go.
