Except for rarities like Crysis, since when does any game remotely tax a PC the way these tech demos do?

That said, I'm sure the next gen games will still look pretty good.

That Unreal demo looks sweet.

... I kind of get what you are saying, but it doesn't really apply. Most games don't tax modern PC's because they are developed for consoles and then (poorly/quickly) ported over to PC's. It isn't like it was 5-10 years ago where it was the other way around. Current PC games aren't requiring as good of hardware because they are mostly console ports that are basing their original development on 5 year old hardware. Once the next gen comes out, it will change for a bit, until the console hardware starts to age.

There is nothing in that demo that shouldn't be achievable on next-gen consoles. You won't see playable content (in-game cinematics, yes) that looks quite that good initially, but once the dev's spend some quality time with the hardware, it will definitely be possible.

I wish I shared your optimism but, despite all the lofty promises for next-gen consoles, I thing the improvement will be incremental at best. I hope I'm wrong and we truly get something that approximates what that tech demo shows, but I suspect we'll be in the same rut you just described.

And, yes, I recall when PC games really pushed things. Graphics getting "dumbed down" is one unfortunate side effect of the dominance of consoles.

Don't worry. ;)

Early doesn't matter as much as late.

Has there been any talk of the new Need for Speed Most Wanted? I heard about it on the Giant Bomb E3 videos, and now on the Weekend Confirmed podcast. Essentially they say it takes the best of Most Wanted and combined it with the best of Burnout Paradise with the Road Rules and multiplayer online stuff.

This sounds really intriguing to me since I played the heck out of Burnout Paradise.

This timed exclusive shit is more harmful to the industry than people realize.

I think it's more harmful to the DLC model, which could be seen as a good thing to some.

Every time a company sells out for a bunch of money to alienate half of their user base by doing a timed exclusive, god kills a kitten.

I wonder if it truly is "half" ;)

Real fans of a company buy their games on all available systems!

So you're saying that a real fan buys say Battlefield 3 on both systems to duplicate their games? That's not true at all

I'm talking about games that are on both systems. It is definitely not feasible to buy the same game on 2 different systems. Obviously there is no such thing as timed exclusive content on an exclusive game. Why should the consumer have to buy 2 copies of the same game just to play stuff the same time everyone else does?

Timed exclusives just end up pissing off the fans who don't have both systems or can't afford to buy 2 copies of every game. That is just bad business.

And for the record, I wasn't bashing any consoles, I was talking about timed exclusive dlc in general.

As the number of actually exclusive titles dwindle I think timed exclusives are becoming one of the primary ways the various consoles will distinguish themselves from one another.

That's exactly what I said. Also you knew it was tongue-in-cheek and as such you totally wouldn't overreact.

why wouldn't a company want to "sell out" and get up-front funding for DLC they only get a fraction of the sale price from the platform providers? Take the money when you can, subsidize it, release it, profit.

Capitalism is about selling out, you punker!

I know it was tongue in cheek, I just really dislike stuff like that. It comes down to which company has more money to buy the popularity. Why not just try to make your name on good hardware and software instead of trying to basically cheat your way to sales.

I just don't like this idea that the only way you can get someone to buy your system is to do things like this. And I still think in the long run it's bad business to tell your fans that you're willing to screw over one of the demographics because of the cash flashed in front of your face. It may push some people to stop buying from that company.

Maybe this is where MS puts my $4 per month when Sony chooses to give away free games? Is that less offensive? New(ish) games are where the money is, I can't fault any company for doing what they can to entice consumers and make money.
