Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Well, let me go one step back. Do you think they will make clones of this game? For me the answer is pretty obvious, but I want to hear from you.
Also, what games/kind of games you want to see? I was reading the latest GI and for some reason got the sense that they were going to release a Transformers game, but then I read the article. :p ---- So, we have read about this. Sylanders is the new Guitar Hero for Activision. Some even say that is bigger, I think they are probably right. At least I think they will get more revenue from this series. And yeah, I'm pretty sure they will milk it to death. I have never played the game, I'm not even sure how it works, I'm scared reading the thread in this forum. I started playing the GH games until GH3, so I think I'll wait on these series too. Maybe by the end of the year, when Activision release the third or fourth game of the series. ;) ... or maybe wait for the perfect "clone" a la Rock Band. |
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
The thought of Skylanders clones based on existing licenses that kids actually care about already (like Transformers or Star Wars or whatever) is pretty goddamn scary.

Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
I know everyone's go to answer is a superheroes or Star Wars but for me...

We are already number one in Google. Let's see how many of these games become real. ;)

Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Since the Wii U controller uses the RFID technology, like Skylanders, I'd expect a Pokemon-based Skylander clone as one of their biggest launch titles -- assuming they can make it in time.
|
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
You have to think that they're scrambling to make a Pokemon game for this. In fact, I imagine when these things became such a big hit, the Pokemon people were screaming "WHY DIDN'T WE THINK OF THIS?!?!!" Hell, the portal could be the little Pokeball thing.
My vote would be a DC superhero game. I would buy the Hell out of that game. |
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Yeah, Pokemon is a natural fit. I'm surprised Namco/Bandai didn't do this first since they have a ton of kids toys that use RFID and a whole division (Banpresto) that makes figurines/statues... plus they make Digimon.
I'm not sure Legos would work... if you built something, how would that translate into the game? You'd need specific RFID chips in the pieces... if anything, I'd think you'd get minifigs with these, but that wouldn't be as much fun. Who did Activision team up with for Skylanders anyway? I didn't think they had a toy division. |
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
I think they could build the RFID chip into the base green board or whatever on which you would build the structure/character/device. It might need a little more intelligence, but, I'm sure it is doable.
|
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
That's what I was thinking. You'd just have the chip in a base piece so it technically wouldn't matter what you build on top of it.
|
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Oh, I thought the draw was that you would build something and then it would be represented in the game. If you're just going to build something and have it show up as the same thing in the game no matter what's on top, that's doable.

Ness says his team's ignorance on the minutiae of the toy industry in some ways led to a better overall product, including the amount of painted details on each figurine. He freely admits that they didn't know about the toy industry's self-imposed limits. |

They don't. Toys For Bob designed them and I guess some factory in China manufacture them. The portal was developed with help from RedOctane, yeah that RedOctane.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/3...ers_Flight.php The biggest challenge in the toy production was getting the toy manufacturer, which produces millions of toys for all kinds of companies, to work up to the standards that Toys for Bob had set for Skylanders: "We overshot [the quality standards] tremendously," Reiche claims. "Our toys have anywhere from 30 to 60 paint operations and they're quite small." |

I did notice something funny the other night. The figures work on the bottom of the portal. There must be nothing to those portals. |
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Interesting... Activision had to have gone all out on this, and the fact that they didn't partner up with a dedicated toy company means that they must have spent a considerable amount of time and cash. Pretty much every major retailer has a dedicated space for the games and toys, with the ability to demo the toys on a portal/console/tv combination. Without that draw of actually being able to see how the character comes to life in the game in the store, I wonder how well it would have done. I don't think I've even ever seen them in the toy section.

Joystiq: January NPD: Sales down without big launches, Skylanders a hit for accessories
"In addition to landing on the list at 8th, Skylanders is seeing huge sales in the accessories category, making up 22% of total accessory sales overall. The game's single character pack was also the best selling accessory during the month of January, and these numbers should bode well for the series and its future iterations." |

Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Transformers and X-Men seem to be healthy speculation for Skylander cloning.
|
Re: Because you know they are coming: The Skylanders clones thread
Corvin, let's keep the actual Skylander talk in the actual Skylanders thread and keep this one for copycat speculation, if that's okay.
