Psychonauts 2 (8/25/2021: PC, PS4, Xbox)

OK, it's way too soon to get excited, but too late -- I'm excited:

http://i.imgur.com/6fGUF.jpg

Markus Persson is the guy who invented Minecraft, so he actually does have the money to make this happen. And in a subsequent tweet, he wrote that he is absolutely serious about this. There's a world between a tweeted conversation and a contract, and another world between a contract and a release, but this is the first step down the road to Psychonauts 2.

No response yet from Tim Schaffer (but the following response from me: "Please please please please please!")

I'm glad someone is willing to help out Schaffer like this. He's talented and even after a few stinkers, I still have faith in this sequel.

I'm sure it will be released alongside Beyond Good and Evil 2.

But seriously, platformers have kind of made a comeback recently. Hopefully this gets made and continues their resurgence.

This article adds a little more info:http://www.geekosystem.com/notch-off...psychonauts-2/

namely:

Steve Dengler, Double Fine financier, responded to Notch with a tweet by saying that he’s in, then tweeted at Notch and Tim Schafer saying that they should move this conversation offline, to something more appropriate than Twitter. It certainly looks as though Notch and Double Fine are looking to make our video game dreams come true.

Psychonauts was the one game from the XBOX generation that I haven't been able to let go of... fortunately it's backwards compatible with the 360 and I've played it many times. I'd love to see a sequel and maybe an HD remaster of the original.

Notch has downplayed the likelyhood of funding Psychonauts 2, saying the budget "is three times higher than my initial impression" and suggesting splitting the risk over several investors, or of Double Fine funding it via Kickstarter. He also points out that Double Fine will be busy the next few months with their adventure game.

This needs to happen. Double Fine has already proven people will pay to help develop their games. Once this first Kickstarter game comes out, they should definitely do it again for Psychonauts 2.

They've only proven that they can raise around $2.4 million (currently) from people to develop a game, and is the most successful Kickstarter so far in terms of money raised and number of donors. Psychonauts 2 has a projected budget of $13 million, so that's a significantly higher amount of money to raise, which may not be possible with Kickstarter.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...dget-valuation

It's possible Psychonauts 2 could be funded with a combination of individual investors and Kickstarter, each funding a portion of the game.

re: Psychonauts 2 (8/25/2021: PC, PS4, Xbox)

Yeah, the problem is that everybody who pledged $15 for the adventure game would have to give a lot more. Asking someone for $15 vs. $50 or more is a big difference. Imagine how the guy on CAG would feel about that.

And another problem is that Psychonauts 2 would almost have to be on the consoles, because being a platformer, it's such a natural fit for them (certainly more so than the mobile devices). I don't know if that's reflected in the budget or not, but if it isn't, there goes some additional expense.

Does anybody know the biggest downloadable game released on XBLA and/or PSN, in terms of price or size? Not counting games also available now or in the past as discs, of course.

I did the math, and splitting $13 million over the 70,000 donors of their current kickstarter would require an average donation of $185. So they'd need significantly more donors (around 260,000) if $50 was the average donation.

There appears to be a technical limit of 2GB for XBLA titles (Games on Demand titles can be bigger, and have reached 7GB):

Developer Just Add Water has stated the 2GB limit is why the Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath remake is not coming to XBLA:

Okay, I guess they'd need a retail disc, since GOD looks like it's limited to titles also available on disc.

I was thinking around $50, as the highest they could realistically request. Of course it would need other funding as well.

I'm not so sure. Resident Evil 4 HD was released on GOD, even though there's no North American disc release of it. Maybe it's because it's a remake of a disc game that MS allowed it on GOD, or because it's from a major publisher (or combination thereof):

re: Psychonauts 2 (8/25/2021: PC, PS4, Xbox)

They're now running a crowdfunding campaign to make this game. They're trying to raise $3.3 million, the same amount they raised for Broken Age:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZFFrE_3n2ws" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFFrE_3n2ws

The crowdfunding campaign is on fig:
https://www.fig.co/campaigns/psychonauts-2

Fig's a relatively new platform. In addition to the standard pledge-for-rewards method, they also allow people to register as investors and actually share in the revenue of the game. The site doesn't mention it, but according to this article you have to have a net worth over $1 million and have to invest at least $1,000 to be an investor in the game:
http://techcrunch.com/2015/08/18/fig-games/

The platforms are PC on Steam and DRM free, Windows/Mac/Linux, as well as PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Delivery date is Fall 2018, so they're predicting a 3 year production for this game.

Edit: here's a pretty in-depth article on the project and Fig:

I was about to jump on this at an Early Bird price of $33, but they want an extra $18 for XO or PS4 version instead of PC.

I'm all for supporting this project. I want this game to be made. But it's madness to demand a 50% premium for console versions of the same game.

I backed it and I never do crowdfunding stuff. I went for the 60 some dollar tier and added the PS4/XBOX One download to it.

It's close to one million already with 34 days left, so no doubt it will get funded. And good for them for being realistic about the release date. I'll wait for the retail release. With GCU, it would still be cheaper then backing here. Sounds like it's going to be bundled with the original game as well. Wonder if it will be remastered.

It's weird that they don't want to do console versions, as they'll more than double their sales if they do.
