Re: Dead Space 3
There is backtracking in every DS game, god i remember all the backtracking in the first game but i didnt mind it. Im about 2 hours into the game and im loving it. Games freaky as ever since the normal necromorphs are a little faster and you can get cornered easily unless you roll. Overall it feels and plays like DS should, im not sure how i feel about the new weapon/crafting system, its something different so it may just take a little more getting used to. personally i give DS a solid 8/10

Are we talking Devil May Cry 4 levels or backtracking?
My biggest complaint with the game, as expected, is how action-packed it is. Part of what made the previous entries in this series, especially the first one, so great was the uncertainty when entering a new area -- will this be a safe place with no enemies, or will there be 1, or will it be one of those horrifying rooms with 5 or more? In this game, don't worry -- there will always be 20, everywhere. And then 1 more for a scare. And then 1 more because that scare wasn't enough. Furthermore, the previous entries always thrived on that feeling of "Will I be able to hold my aim steady and cut off the limbs of all these monstrosities coming towards me before they get to me?" It was a major aspect of what drove the suspense and horror. In this game, every enemy sprints at you at full speed and starts hacking away, without fail. But don't worry, the game throws medkits and ammo at you like they're candy to "balance" things out. It all becomes very predictable after a while, and results in a lot of the tension being gone. There are also a lot of very repetitive action-focused sequences later in the game that I won't spoil here. Those are my major, no-spoiler beefs with the game. But there's also a lot of positive in this title, and I think anyone who likes Dead Space won't regret playing it. The atmosphere is still there, there's plenty of creepiness, and I was amazed at the variety of settings you get to visit after having the impression from the publicity materials that the entire thing would involve trekking through snow. It might honestly be the most visually-impressive game of this generation, at least scenery-wise. I liked the change to make ammo generic across all weapons, simply because it makes inventory management less of a hassle. And you can build some truly great weapons with the new crafting system, once you figure it out (the interface is pretty terrible, though). |

Re: Dead Space 3
I agree. Excellent summation. I still disagree on the backtracking aspect though. It seemed to me after completing the optional missions (which are the MOST difficult missions in the game IMO), there was always a door that acted as a shortcut back to where the mission started so there was no backtracking at all. Actually I can remember a few times where I actually wanted to backtrack to drop some stuff off at a bench and the game wouldn't let me because it locked the doors behind me. The only way out was forward. I rarely remember having to trek through any of the same rooms.
You're description of the enemies is spot on. They are relentless and they ALL move twice as fast as you do. I can't imagine playing on Impossible difficulty because there is literally no safe spots. And they seem to constantly spawn behind you. I don't necessarily see that as a negative though, I think it adds to the tension. It gets pretty frantic at times. I think the story and characters in this one are the best of the three. I actually want to play co-op now because I really started to like his partner at the end. Professional reviews don't mean shit to me, but I'm truly shocked this game is getting 7's. I'd say it deserves at least a 9 out of 10. It's Dead Space in every way, and they still managed to change enough things to make it feel new. |
Re: Dead Space 3
I'd say 7 is about right, to be honest, but that's not a bad rating. Maybe an 8 if I was feeling generous. Remember I'm taking the entire game into account and avoiding spoilers, but I will say that the first 2/3 of the game is definitely the strongest part.

Re: Dead Space 3
To each their own.
Personally, I think it's better than DS2. And the only reason I think DS1 is better is because it was new and different at the time. As far as content (story, characters, locations, weapons, length, etc etc) this game has them all beat hands down. I think it's hard to keep it "scary" and fresh when you know it's coming, but this game does a pretty damn good job of keeping it tense. |

 Well, I guess I'm back in the interested list.
Really like reading what you wrote about the game. Specially the part about the ammo. So it's not Assassin's Creed 3 bad, more of an AC:Revelations or something like that. ;) |

I enjoyed AC III.

Re: Dead Space 3
I tried the co-op. I joined some random guy and he quit after 10 minutes, but it was actually pretty cool for as brief as it was. We did the prologue and it was neat having a second person there. Also, it seemed like the drops stay on the ground for BOTH players to get. Either that or this guy didn't pick anything up. There was even dialog between the two guys that you obviously miss when playing solo. I'd definitely like to play through the entire game in co-op and see what else is different, but it's gonna be tough with randoms that leave so fast.

I don't care what reviews say nor did I bother downloading the demo because I was 100% going to buy this on day 1. I'm 5 chapters in and so far it's very much Dead Space and then some. I'm digging the new weapon system. It was a little daunting when I first got to a bench but after playing for a bit and collecting upgrades and parts it makes more sense. I also like how there's only 1 type of ammo and it works across ALL weapons (hopefully it stays that way for the rest of the game). I hated how in the first two games the necros always seemed to drop ammo for weapons I didn't have.
I'm one of the biggest Dead Space fans there is and I'm loving this game so far... not sure why it's getting bad reviews and people say "it doesn't feel like dead space". Makes me wonder if these people have even played it (other than the demo). The guys with guns is like the first 10 minutes. But it fits with the story so it works, IMO. After that first chapter it's been nothing but very Dead Space-like necro-overrun space junk. What's the problem with that? Glad to hear the bench is daunting for others as well. I just sat there completely confused the first time I got to a bench. I still am not exactly sure how the damn add-ons work. Looks like I need to spend some time with my play-thru book that I bought. And fuck EA and their obsession with DLC. I'm not buying a piece of it.

Just noticed...looks like you are playing on the PS3. Guess that cancels that. :( |
Re: Dead Space 3
Yeah, PS3 for me. If anyone else here wants to do co-op feel free to send a friend request. I'm online a lot so I'm pretty flexible with times. Plus I plan on getting 100% (which requires at least 3 more playthroughs) so I have a lot to do in the meantime. The game forces you to create different save files for the different modes (standard, classic, survival, hardcore), so it should be easy to keep the co-op game separate.

The 3 optional co-op missions are pretty interesting. In fact, they're almost the only part of the game that explores the insanity angle that was so prevalent in the first two games but is almost completely missing from this one as far as Isaac is concerned. |
Re: Dead Space 3
I am on chapter 14...I am not sure how much time I have left, but I agree with metacritic's average score of 78 for this game. The first two games are masterpieces of this generation, with the second game losing just a bit of the magic the first game had.
There is a lot to love about the game. Combat is satisfying....upgrades after you get the hang of them are fun....Some of the side missions felt like the first two games...graphics are amazing.... What I don't like....the story....the eye rolling "bad" guys....the lack of real edge of your seat moments outside some frustrating parts when you don't know what to do....All the talking...having so much "story" takes away the claustrophobic nature of the first two games...there are so many small rooms that lead from one elevator to the next it makes you wonder what architect designed these buildings... I am having fun, but I highly recommend waiting for a price drop on this one. It does not live up to the legacy of the first two games. |
Re: Dead Space 3
I've never played any of the DS games. Does DS1 look really out dated?

Re: Dead Space 3
Dead Space 2 was the first game I played solely with my turtle beach surround headphones for the same reason. I needed to be immersed in it.

Re: Dead Space 3
I tired to play with the kinect voice commands and its a hit and miss. Sometimes my surround sound would set off a random voice command, I think it worked better in mass effect 3.

I'm loving the game so far, for the mostpart--the one thing I really miss is the old weapons system. I loved upgrading my weapons that way, and the new bench system is greatly annoying. WHY they would change it in this way I have no idea. Also I seem to always be running low on ammo. That aside, the game is creepy, visually awesome, and seems to be DS through and through (though I too am boycotting EA's DLC. I'm good the way it is). |
Re: Dead Space 3
the last 1-2 hours of the game almost ruined it...not sure what the hell they were thinking....at least the last boss was great....much better than the second game...
now on to coop... |

Heavy Elite frame Upper-Military-with Mk-5 precision tip. This makes a 4-6 round sniper riffle. Lower-forgot what it was called but I made a force gun...this is only to knock back enemies that rushed me so I could snipe them. I slapped stasis bullets on this. Even the late hard guys would drop in two shots from this gun...and stasis bullets kept them from moving around. The power of stasis on the bullets is based on the power of the shot. On a gun that has low damage the stasis lasted about 1/2 second...and you could not stack it with extra shots. On the sniper it last almost as long as my normal stasis... My other gun was a rocket launcher with the safety attachment. Just aim at feet and fire when surrounded...and for boss fights no need to aim that much. I changed the bottom on this regularly to get the various achievements for different weapons and stuff. because these guns required only a few shots at a time, even though they used more ammo per shot, I never had ammo problems. The moment I slapped on a semi-auto/full auto type gun or fire/ice weapon my ammo evaporated. |
Re: Dead Space 3
One thing about ammo watch your reloads, if you reload anytime you will lose the whole clip.

Re: Dead Space 3
question about pure survival mode. After beating the game I started up this mode. When I got to my first bench it said I had unlocked all the preorder weapons, but none of them were in my safe like my first run. I thought this might have to do with the fact I already used the guns. But now that I am at my first kiosk, it said I had unlocked all the suits from before, along with the legendary suit...but there are no suits available in the kiosk...none...is this part of pure survival or is my game glitched?
