Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

Yikes this sounds like total crap. Might rent it when it hits Red Box but it's disappointing to say the least. I have to say though, I thought we might be in for a rude awakening when I saw how just plan crappy the reload animation on the pulse rifle was. It looked like a crudely drawn animated GIF. Doom 1 had better animation than that.

Anyone have a link with a summary of the actual plot? Not sure I'd be able to play through it but I am curious as to how they attempt to explain some of the plot holes between Alien/Alien 3 even though I've heard the explanations are ridiculous at best.

Wonder if there is still some small hope?
QA can only report issues and assess the risk involved in releasing software like that, and they obviously did based on that list of things. It's higher ups that make the call to override qa's assessment.

Spitter's "Acid Spray" now originates from the mouth.

Wow. Where was it coming from before?

Good lord. They can't even put out a game with finished FX work?

And now add this....from Gamespot

Aliens: Colonial Marines development was a 'total train wreck' says ex-dev
February 12, 2013 3:40AM PST

A "total train wreck" of development saw Gearbox outsource the entire single-player campaign of Aliens: Colonial Marines to TimeGate Studios, a recently surfaced forum post by an alleged ex-staffer at Gearbox has claimed.

The long-dormant post from May 2012 (spotted by Superannuation) pours cold water on another poster's anticipation for the title. "Hate to say it, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines," it said.

"I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, 6 years now? Gearbox isn't even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past."

"I hope it proves me wrong, as I still have alot of friends still working at Gearbox, but I am expecting it to be average at best."

I have my collector's edition sitting right here. It looks so great from the outside. I feel battered and abused.

I feel for you. I actually came close to pre-ordering but forgot my XBox Live is due the first of next month. I already plan on GOW and may end up with Bioshock so Aliens got bumped. I bet you are not alone. I'm just shocked Gearbox let this out like this...

The Aliens In Colonial Marines Are So Stupid, You Don’t Even Need To Shoot Them

Mind: this video is the game on a higher difficulty—'Hardened'. The player is able to get through the entire level without firing a single shot.

I noticed that this game also a $30 Season Pass, for those who just can't get enough.

That ridiculous. But it makes me smile a little. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a game doesn't let you move forward until every last enemy is killed and your NPC partners catch up to you.

That video is hilarious. My favorite part is when the NPC marines teleport in front of the player.

In Gearbox's defense, anyone who is not Valve has royally fucked up a Half-Life/Counter-Strike title.

Electronic Arts, I'm looking right at you.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

I am usually pretty forgiving when it comes to games, but this thing suuuuuucks. Sweet Jesus it's horrid.

I will sell the game off tomorrow and buy it again when it hits the Duke Nukem $5 clearance price. The power loader statue is nice though. Keeping all that stuff.

Do you think you'll recoup enough to justify keeping the statue?

$50 is probably what a decent alien vs. power loader statue goes for I'm guessing, so after I sell off the game, yeah I'm still happy with my purchase.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

Hopefully y'all can see this. A friend posted this to my Facebook wall this morning. Apparently his coworker's brother works at GB and went to the launch party. This is the pass they wore. It just takes me right back to the Spaceballs video we saw earlier. I know it's thematically correct for a party, but in retrospect it comes off as a complete farce.

Reddit thread from someone "behind the scenes":

http://www.reddit.com/r/LV426/commen..._at_the_final/

Basically "Yeah doomed from the start, sorry it sucks and doesn't make any sense, but buy the DLC."

As a tester at Ubisoft Montreal for over 7 years I APPLAUD you for that comment. Our job is to flag the issues and give the devs an overall status of the game. If they decide that, for example, fixing feature A might break feature B then our bug becomes a WNF ("Will Not Fix"). Same for time constraints or percentage of occurence of the bug etc...

We have to make sure that the bugs are in the database to cover our asses and yes even then some bugs get under our noses ; no game is perfect but we strive to weed out everything we can.

Again thank you Liver&Onions because I see too many threads where people thing QA is just not involved/incompetent in the making of a game.

Maybe they should have poured more money into the game, and less into the fancy launch party.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

Loved this bit from the article:

I can't really comment without feeling bad beyond saying that the script was approved by 20th Century FOX, and that the rush to throw a playable product together came at the cost of the story. Campaign does a pretty bad job of explaining a lot of the questions raised at the start of the game, and so hopefully there will be DLC to flesh that out a bit better.

Sounds like Fox's effort with this Alien release is on par with their other recent attempts to milk the franchise, especially the movies.
