Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

Saw something over at GameInformer I think and said "Aliens;CM" sales were down 85%.

I've been torn over this whole ordeal. Being a fan of the Aliens/Predator series be games or movies I was really hoping we finally see something. And Gearbox...Borderlands 1&2 have been my favorite for playing; right up there with GOW and Halo. We may never know the whole story behind this. It's a shame that somehow this cannot be salvaged, fixed and done right. Re-issue it and everyone who bought it be given a 50% credit for their pain and suffering.

Agree but just hoping...if nothing is done then good chance we won't see another attempt for two-three years or even longer. It's a absolute disgrace we just cannot have a really good Aliens game.

rented this...it was ok. I don't think it deserved some of the 4's out of 10...as a coop game I would give it a 6.

Least Surprising Video Game News Ever:

Layoffs Hit TimeGate Studios
TimeGate preparing for upcoming console transition.

Layoffs have hit TimeGate Studios, one of the developers behind Aliens: Colonial Marines. The news was confirmed by Polygon earlier today, who received the following statement from TimeGate president Adel Chaveleh:

"Today, we had to make the difficult decision to let go of some great game developers. This is never easy, and we're doing all we can to assist those developers affected. TimeGate is preparing, as is the entire industry, for the transition to next-generation consoles and new business models. As part of this reinvention, all projects and strategic initiatives continue to move forward at the studio."

TimeGate was co-founded by Chaveleh in 1998 and released games including Section 8 and FEAR Files before recently working on Aliens: Colonial Marines. Last month, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford told IGN that TimeGate worked on “probably about 20 or 25 percent of the total time” of Colonial Marines, noting that “if you take preproduction out of it, their effort’s probably equivalent to ours. Now, it’s not fair to take preproduction out of it, but that says a lot about how much horsepower those guys put into it.”

IGN wishes the best of luck to anyone affected by today’s news.

So you're going to let go game Devs because of the upcoming transition. That's sort of like Ford and Chevy letting go some car and truck engineers because of the new model year coming up.

Maybe they should have put some of those "great game developers" on this project instead of all the shitty ones they evidently still employ.

Don't bother. Don't give them money for making a truly shitty game.

Gearbox Is Working On More Patches To Fix Aliens: Colonial Marines, But No Apologies Yet

Gearbox recognizes that there are some...flaws with Aliens: Colonial Marines. That's why they're continuing to work on patching the game.

At their PAX East panel today, the developers announced a few more fixes that players will see in future patches.

Chris Faylor community manager at Gearbox mentioned the most notable changes:

More aggressive AI
Tweaked difficulty
Better data protection
More combat feedback (Smart Gun Tracking, Xeno Death Animation)
Improved PC Visuals
Support for Hot Fixes coming online

But... that's it. No apology has been mentioned officially yet. Just a commitment to future patches. But whether or not those will significantly change such a mangled game isn't clear. So far the bullet-pointed changes are too vague to make sense of.

They noted at the panel today that some people aren't happy with the outcome of the game. But they maintain that they are still in love with the universe. We'll see if that translates.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

I rented this and was unimpressed with the whole section in the Sulaco. There was a part that I just couldn't get past and I basically gave up and was ready to snap the disc in two. Once I finally made it to LV426 I enjoyed it a whole lot more. Even with the paper thin plot, garbage voice acting and character development, and horrific and laughable glitches and errors.... I still found the game entertaining. I wouldn't buy this shit, but I'm glad I played it.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines (Gearbox, Sega) - Spring 2012

I was going to buy a new system based on this game. Glad I read the reviews first.

The trailers for this game made it look awesome, and very much like a true ALIENS sequel, but I saw reviews on youtube with in-game footage and it didn't look worth buying a new system for.

I never liked the Aliens VS Predator games with the exception of the Atari Jaguar version which was pretty creepy, and the Capcom arcade beat em up. The best Aliens game, to me, was the Konami arcade game. They took some real liberties with the xenomorph designs but as wacky as they were, that game felt the most Giger-esque compared to all other Aliens games.

That DS Aliens game is intense. Definitely try it, but prepare to have your ass handed to you.
