I didn't mean it like that but point taken. My apologies Infidel. I didn't realize this would turn into the "Real Housewives of DvdTALK."

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

Finally found time to finish this, and it was outstanding. Comparing it to Uncharted, I still like Nathan Drake's character better, as well as the overall stories. But the big difference for me is that when it got truly
Spoiler:
supernatural
as always turns me off in the UC games, I didn't lose interest here. Can't wait for the follow-up.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

I finally got my hands on this game. The whole intro sequence leading up to the title card is a horribly cobbled together mess. Given all the great praise the game has gotten here, I'll keep playing. But that very brief taste of the game didn't inspire much confidence.

It's all QTE for the first 10 minutes. At least it's quick and easy.

Yeah, the first part of the game is pretty mediocre and by the numbers.

I always saw it as an extended intro without making you just sit there and take it.

Stick with it. I also picked this up not that long ago and finished it last night. I wasn't necessarily thrilled with the beginning or the ending, but inbetween it's a pretty stellar game.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

Thanks, guys. You were right. It gets much better as the game progresses. Been having fun and enjoying finding the hidden tombs. Though those are shorter than I'd like. I also really like the Metroid style gameplay when it comes to new gear and upgrades.

The story development certainly improves even if it's sparse at best. Not really sold on the VA for Lara. Sometimes she's good but other times she sounds like she's just phoning it in. Although that's a problem that plagues the rest of the cast as well.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

I've been having a blast with this game but just realized that I've not bothered to use the quick navigation option. I just got the

grenade launcher attachment for my assault rifle.
Am I too far along in the game for any backtracking?

On a side note, I loved the

homage to The Descent. Though I have no idea how or when Lara washed off all that blood as she looks pretty clean shortly afterwards.

You can backtrack for collectables at any time, including after you finish the game.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

True but there is one final checkpoint you cross(to final area/boss) where you can't go back unless you finish the game.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

Thanks, guys. So without getting spoilery, am I passed that point of no return?

And on a slightly different topic, is there a game+ option in this game once I beat it? Or do I have to collect everything again in subsequent playthroughs?

No game+.

The point of no return was pretty obvious, IMO. There might have even been a pop up letting you know.

That's a shame but not unexpected.

I'm playing on PC so I don't think I've seen any pop ups (beyond the usual ones for achievements). Where I left off is
Spoiler:
after Lara saves the remaining crew from that makeshift hanging cage and has to fight her way out of the flaming temple. I saved right after I got the grenade launcher attachment.

Am I still able to backtrack or is it already a moot point?

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

There's no new game+, but after you finish the game you can still run around the island to find any items and tombs you missed, right?

You're still able to backtrack. And you will be able to collect everything after you complete the game.

You're fine.

As Groucho said, you can go back after you finish. Worrying about the last checkpoint is moot unless you're trying to 100% the game before moving on to the last section.

The name of the last area is Chasm Ziggurat, if you're worried about it.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

I just wanna max out all my gear and skills before the final confrontation. The only aspect I don't like about this game are the combat sequences. At first it was cool because I was just using my bow to silently take out the islanders and only relying on my firearms if I was pinned down or ran out of arrows. But the sections where you're forced to deal with waves of enemies are tedious and aggravating.

I hope everything maxed out will make them less so.

I don't get why they didn't stick to the sparse ammo and stealth approach from earlier in the game. The wave segments just suck.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)

Waves of enemies are the "in" thing right now, it was also the low point in the Uncharted games.
